The projectile shapes are ogive- cylinder bodies which have been modified by machining three forward facing surfaces and three rearward facing surfaces on the projectile. The machined surfaces are twisted at a rate corresponding to a typical rifling twist. The forward facing surfaces produce a helical or corkscrew type effect and the rearward surfaces form a nonconical boattail and a triangular base. The objective of the test program was to study shapes which have improved stability characteristics which require less gyroscopic stabilization. A more slender, longer L/d projectile can then be flown which has lower drag and shorter time of flight to a moving target.

The test range included Mach numbers of 1.94, 2.88, and 4.00 and a full range of obturator positions was surveyed at each Mach number. The results indicate that with the ball partially open the projectile internal flow field is severely complicated by combined viscous and shock wave interactions. A large of the drag reduction due to ball opening is obtained during the final motion o the ball and the partially open condition may lead to drags above those of the standatrd projectile, particularly at the lower Mach numbers. With the ball closed, the projectile configuration is dominated by bluff-body drag on the ball itself may be estimated by the previously espoused theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a series of shots fired in the NOL pressurized ballistics firing range to determine the effect of Reynolds number on drag of the Angled Arrow Projectile at Mach numbers of 1.86 and 2.87. Drag values were determined for a Reynolds number variation of nine million. The results obtained at M = 1.86 indicate an increase in drag coefficient of approximately 4.55 per cent for a change in Reynolds number from 2,000,000 to 11,000,000. At M - 2.87 an increase in drag coefficient of approximately 20 percent was obtained for a similar variation in Reynolds number. The drag values are in fair agreement with wind-tunnel tests and with the estimated free-flight values of the full-scale missile at high altitude.

A series of remotely controlled pressure taps located in the non-spinning inner portion of the wind tunnel model detected the surface pressures through vent holes in the spinning outer portion. Data were obtained at spin rates of 0 and 82 Hz for angles of attack of 0, 4, and 10 deg. Testing was conducted at a Mach number of 0.94 and Reynolds number of 4 million per foot. The results illustrate the large circumferential pressure variation over the boattail region as well as the nonlinear effect of the angle of attack. The integrated pressure data indicate not only the total Magnus force and moment coefficients for the model, but also the individual contributions of the various body components. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of several Solid Fuel Ramjet (SFRJ) projectiles are estimated by a combination of the NSWC-Aeroprediction code and a post-processing analysis that account for the effects of inlet and the buttress threads. Comparison between predicted and measured normal-force curve slope for two SFRJ-SPINNER configurations show good agreement in one case and 18%-23% analytical under-prediction in the other. The agreement in center-of-pressure location is very good in both cases. The analysis explains the unstable flight of the 60mm SFRJ-FINNER Projectile, having original fins. The analysis predicts, for the projectile with extended fins, a static margin of 0.5 calibers at low supersonic Mach numbers, marginal stability as Mach number approaches 4.3 and instability at Mach numbers larger then 4.3. Wind-tunnel tests of this configuration show that the open inlet contributes more normal-force than accounted for in the analysis and that contribution of the fin set is slightly underpredicted by the NSWC code. The predicted normal-force curve slope is up to 11% smaller than experimentally obtained and the center-of-pressure location is in good agreement with test results. The experimentally obtained contribution of the buttress threads to the axial-force coefficient is in good agreement with the predicted value. No effect on the threads on the stability of the projectile was observed under the wind tunnel flow conditions.

The initiatives by which this enterprising engineer develops his technical approach to a project are very informative and offer the reader an insight into the workings of successful operations. He achieves an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how aerospace history is made by weaving in the historical significance of these projects as they are developed. As a former aeronautical engineer at the rapidly growing Mc- Donnell Aircraft Corporation, Bob gives us an interesting exposure to the importance of top management's relationship with the workforce in a successful company. "Mr. Mac" made it a point to make all his employees team members by frequent communication and friendly association.
