Book excerpt: A low- speed wind-tunnel investigation was conducted to determine the effects of canopy construction methods, design details, and canopy slots on the static longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of all-flexible parawings. Construction details such as type of nonporous canopy fabric, glued or sewed seams, tape reinforcement, or cloth-weave orientation had little effect on maximum lift-drag ratios and resultant-force coefficients. The maximum lift-drag ratios varied from 2.2 to 2.5 for the various single-keel unslotted parawings, and from 2.2 to 2.4 for the slotted canopy parawings. Incremental reductions in the lengths of all the suspension lines caused corresponding reductions in the resultantforce coefficients and maximum lift-drag ratios. The available range for modulation of resultant-force coefficient and lift-drag ratio by shortening the control lines was very limited.

This book was released on 1962 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel for a range of speeds from minimum stall speed to speeds at which it was possible to produce a load factor sufficient to cause wing buckling. Static aerodynamic and control data, wing-pressure-distribution data, wing-deflection photographs, and wing-guy-cable loads are presented. Results of the tests show that a maximum load factor of the order of 4.50 can be attained for a normal inflation pressure of 7.0 lb/sq in.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deployment characteristics of a 1/8-size dynamically and elastically scaled model of an inflatable parawing suitable for the recovery of an Apollo-type spacecraft were investigated in free flight and in the Langley transonic dynamics tunnel using a model which was mounted to permit limited angular freedom. The deployments were of a passive type; that is, there was no powered reel-in or reel-out of the suspension lines. However, a braking system was used to attenuate the dynamic loads in the suspension lines. The deployment technique was developed in an initial series of wind-tunnel tests. By utilizing the equipment and technique evolved from the wind-tunnel studies, successful free-flight deployments were accomplished and the transient loads associated with the deployments were measured. These results were compared with the results of subsequent wind-tunnel tests.
