Book excerpt: An elastic wing with variable sweep was designed and subcritically tested for aeroelastic divergence in the Virginia Tech six foot stability wind tunnel. This wing has an internal interchangeable graphite/epoxy plate that provides the wing stiffness. This plate had the shape of a high aspect ratio trapezoid with a line of symmetry coincident with the spanwise reference axis. A fiberglass aerodynamic shell with ten chordwise sections surrounds the plate. These shell sections were mounted so as to minimize their stiffness contribution to the plate and still maintain good aerodynamic performance. A series of six symmetric plates with various fiber orientations were constructed. Fiber layup on each plate is symmetric about the midplane parallel to the surface. By inverting the plate, it was possible to test 11 unique fiber orientations. Theoretically, identified test results predicted relationships between wing sweep, fiber orientation, and divergence speed. One configuration, tested to the divergence speed, showed good correlation with the subcritically projected divergence speed. (Author).

The approach was to perform a low cost, fairly simple wind tunnel test on a variable sweep cantilever wing model. Available analytical methods were used and were shown to accurately predict the divergence speed of both aluminum and composite plate structures in the subsonic speed range. Methods were evaluated for predicting the onset of divergence using subcritical wind tunnel data. Results of the analyses and tests are presented.

The analyses and experiment presented here show that divergence can occur without a structural dynamic mode losing its oscillatory nature. Aeroelastic divergence occurs when the structural restorative capability or stiffness of a structure is overwhelmed by the static aerodynamic moment. This static aeroelastic coupling does not require the structural dynamic system behavior to cease, however. Aeroelastic changes in the dynamic mode behavior are governed not only by the stiffness, but by damping and inertial properties. The work presented here supports these fundamental assertions by examining a simple system: a typical section airfoil with only a rotational structural degree of freedom.

Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental investigation was made of the aeroelastic flutter and divergence behavior of graphite/epoxy forward swept wings with rigid body pitch and plunge freedoms present. A complete, two-sided 30-degree forward swept wing aircraft model was constructed and mounted with low friction bearings in a low speed wind tunnel. Four different ply layup wings could be interchanged on the model, namely, [02/90]s', [52 /0]s' , [302 /0]s' , and [-152/0]s' . Wind tunnel tests on the "free" flying models revealed body freedom flutter, bending-torsion flutter, and a support dynamic instability which could be eliminated by proper adjustment of the support stiffness. Good agreement with linear theory was found for all the observed instabilities. Additional tests on the models with rigid body pitch only gave lower critical speeds, while tests on the cantilever wings gave higher speeds. The [152 /0]s wing gave the best tailored aeroelastic behavior.
