Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 1 of 3 IT is a somewhat humiliating re ection that it should have been reserved to a German scholar to write the first detailed biography of the elder Pitt which has appeared in recent years. The lives written by Mr. W. D. Green and by Mr. Frederic Harrison in the Heroes of the Nations and in the Twelve English Statesmen series are in their way admirable; but the exigencies of space forbade the exhaustive treatment of events made by Dr. Albert von Ruville. The latter has made great use of the Newcastle Manuscripts in the British Museum, that mine, which has even now by no means been worked to its full extent, and of the diplomatic reports pre served in the Record Offices in London and Berlin. When the bearing of the evidence depends so much on the prejudices and inclinations of the witness, and when the mass of material is so great as to necessitate selection, there will always be room for much difference of opinion. Dr. Von Ruville at once proves his title to be considered an impartial! Critic by the manner in which he deals with the stock German charge against the British negotiators of the Treaty of Paris, 1763, of having betrayed their ally Frederick the Great. With this instance before us we must admit that, if we find ourselves differing from the author, the fault does not arise from any lack in him of the judicial temper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 1 of 2 To Mr. George Trevelyan I owe much for his inspiring encouragement and to Mr. Erskine Childers for his valuable suggestions. Mr. Denys Winstanley most generously read through and gave advice on the whole of the proof-sheets it is difficult to thank him enough for the advantage I have derived from his accurate and extensive knowledge of Chatham and the period. Mrs. Hilary Jenkinson has stood by the book for over a year: for her scholarly researches and her unstinted help I am most deeply grateful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 3 of 3 We have already seen What political principles came into vogue at the court Of Frederick, Prince Of Wales, how these principles were evolved by Lord Bolingbroke, and how adopted by his friends and disciples. The qu1ntessence of them was, that the king ought to rule in accord With Parliament, and that this accord ought not to arise from a subordination of the one power to the other, but from the harmony existing between them - the king being impelled by his patriotism and intelligence, Parliament by its character as a free assembly representing the whole nation, to act exclusively in the interests of the nation. I endeavoured at the time to prove that these ideas were based upon false premises, and were, consequently, incapable Of realisation. All they did was to provide the divergent elements, the groups representing wholly discordant interests, with common aims, and to unite them upon a fixed programme. To a practical Statesman, or a ruling sovereign, they were useless. Such an one would inevitably and speedily recognise that for him there were only two alternatives - to lead or to be led. Prince Frederick, if he had come to the throne, would have been obliged either to relinquish the principles in question or to be guided by them only in appearance. The inevitability Of one or other of these lines of action, which he never fully realised, became all the more evident to his son. Hence George 111. Appeared to deviate from his father's principles, and differences of opinion arose between him and many Of those who had been loyal friends of Leicester House. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 1 William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, was born November the 15th, 1708. He was the younger son of Robert Pitt, of Boconnock in Cornwall, Esq., by Harriet, sister of John Villiers, Earl of Grandison, and he was grandson of Thomas Pitt, sometime governor of Madras. He received his education at Eton; from whence he was sent, at the age of eighteen, to Trinity College, Oxford. Upon quitting the University he made a tour through part of France and Italy, His limited income making it advisable for him to select some profession, he obtained a cornetcy in the Blues. In 1735, he took his seat in Parliament for the borough of Old Sarum, where he quickly became distinguished for his abilities and eloquence. Sir Robert Walpole resented his opposition by depriving him of his commission. He was then appointed groom of the bedchamber to His Royal Highness Frederick, Prince of Wales; and in the administrations which followed the retirement of Walpole, he successively filled various official situations, and was chosen of the Privy Council. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Right Honourable William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 1 of 2 The following is Mr. Archdeacon Coxe's Opinion of the Anecdotes of the Life of the Earl of Chatham: I think it a duty I owe to the public, in mentioning this wretched compilation, to declare, that from the access I have had to the papers and documents of the times, I find the Life of the Earl of Chatham superficial and inaccu rate, principally drawn from newspapers and party pamphlets, and interspersed, perhaps, with a few anecdotes communicated in desultory conversations by Earl Temple. In affecting to give a volume of important state papers, the editor has raked together a col lection of speeches, memorials, and letters, the greater part of which are derived from periodical publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, Vol. 2 of 3 It was the French who, at an early period, took possession Of the estuary and shores of the St. Lawrence, and, by so doing, found themselves embarked on the course above de scribed. They penetrated through the continent to the mouth of the Mississippi, with which France immediately established direct sea communication with a view to colonisation. Having thus made themselves masters of the important north and south entrances, their next inevitable step was to endeavour to possess themselves of the whole hinterland of the English colonies, with the main features of which their explorers had already acquainted them.
