Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir William Penn: His Proprietary Province and Its Counties; Those of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Ladies and Gentleman of the Federation of Historical Societies of Pennsylvania: It shall be my endeavor to interest you in the sagacious statesmanship of Sir William Penn; also, the fascination of the Etymology and Genealogy of the Counties of the Province and subsequently of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In Penn's Frame of Government, or Constitution, for his Proprietory Province, is the following enunciation of principles: "Liberty without Obedience is Confusion. Obedience without Liberty is Slavery. To carry the evenness is partly owing to the Constitution, and partly to the Magistry. Where either of these fail, Government will be subjected to Convulsions; but where both are wanting it must be totally subverted (Russia). Where both meet the Government is Like to endure. Which I humbly pray and hope God will please to make the lot of Pennsylvania. 4th month, April 25th day, 1682, (Signed) William Penn." Vol. I., Colonial Records (Pa.) p. 30. Now the world rejoices in the victorious refutation of the Doctrine. "Obedience without Liberty," born of the Devil, ruthlessly pursued by that child of the devil, Wilhelm II. of Germany; overcome by tremendous sacrifices, in our vivid memories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Penn in America: Or an Account of His Life From the Time He Received the Grant of Pennsylvania in 1681, Until His Final Return to England Although several biographies have appeared respecting the Founder of Pennsylvania, the author believes that there is still room for another; relating to that particular portion of his life which he spent in the Province: commencing with his first application for the grant until his final return to England, extending through a period of more than twenty years. Within this time transpired the most important events by which he will continue to be best known. Judging by the little space given hitherto to these matters would go to show that there must have been either inattention, or a paucity of materials. Though his several biographers have written with different motives, but not one with a view of enlarging upon the details of his residence in America. During the author's long connection with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, he observed that no information was more sought after than that of Penn while living in his Province. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of William Penn My hope was that Macaulay would in time with draw his charges as disproved. I had some rea son for this hope. His mind was racked by doubts. And he was often busy with this portion of his book. It is within my knowledge that his latest thoughts on earth were given to Penn and that which he had said of Penn. Some part of what he might have done, the world can guess from what he did. He ceased the work of ca] umny. In what he wrote after 1857, there is not a single sneer at Penn. His indexes were greatly changed. He struck out much that was false, and more that was abusive. Penn's Jacobitism was no longer 'scandalous, ' his word was no longer a 'falsehood.' Penn was no longer charged with 'treasonable conduct, ' with flight to France.' and with 'renewing his plots.' What else Macau lay might have done can only be surmised; but it is fair to think that changes in his index would have been followed by amendments in his text. I know that he was far from satisfied with his 'notes' of 1857, and that he was engaged in re considering the defence oi Penn when he leaned back in his chair and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Penn: The Founder of Pennsylvania America naturally recalls attention to the story of his life. I have been requested by my publishers to prepare a new work on the subject: and Quaker descent on my mother's side, the study for many years of opinions entertained by the Society of Friends, and sympathy with the founder of Pennsylvania in his love of peace, and his advocacy of civil and re ligious freedom, have rendered the task pleasant and interesting. The writings of Penn, and his life by Thomas Clarkson, in two volumes, 1813, supply a basis for the whole work. But important supplementary know ledge has been added since. The controversy raised by Lord Macaulay touching Penn's relations with James II. Illustrated those points in many ways and the Right Hon. W. E. Forster especially, in his ex haustive pamphlet on the subject, published in 1849, supplied much original information for subsequent writers. Hepworth Dixon's popular and eloquent Historical Biography, founded on Family and State Papers, did not add much to what was known be fore; but Hazard's Annals of Pennsylvania, 1850.
