Book Synopsis A Morbid Fascination by : Richard Peck
Download or read book A Morbid Fascination written by Richard Peck and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-02-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a broad range of literature to examine the political culture of white South Africa, Peck finds both a preoccupation with political issues and a dislike for politics. The literature examined ranges from South African propaganda, through a variety of bestsellers—adventure stories and mystery novels written by authors such as Wilbur Smith and James McClure—to self-conscious literary works of the canonical white South African authors such as Alan Paton, André Brink, and Nadine Gordimer. The study gives attention to anti-political features of the liberal tradition that dominated South African writing, and to the failure of writers who undermined that tradition to generate a more positive view of politics. The morbid fascination with politics that is found across the full spectrum of creative writing is a reflection of the circumstances in which writers found themselves, but it is still a worrisome feature of the white South African political culture.

Book Synopsis Remembering Bosman by : Stephen Gray
Download or read book Remembering Bosman written by Stephen Gray and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spellbinding and varied line-up of recollections of the star turn of the 20th-century South African literary scene. Included in this valuable tribute are detailed memoirs of four of Herman Charles Bosman's keepers of the flame: his colleague George Howard, his cousin Zita Grové, his disciple Lionel Abrahams; and the unpublished chapters by his widow, Helena Lake, never previously collected in book form. In addition there are souvenirs by Bosman's other wives and lovers. Tributes come from his press associates, while much intimate interview material is included to complete this strange portrait of Johannesburg's murderous blue-eyed boy. Their accumulated testimony here gives as good value as Bosman himself ever did during his embattled lifetime.
Book Synopsis The Frightened Land by : Jennifer Beningfield
Download or read book The Frightened Land written by Jennifer Beningfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the spatial politics of separation and division in South Africa, principally during the apartheid years, and the effects of these physical and conceptual barriers on the land. In contrast to the weight of literature focusing on post-apartheid South Africa, the focus of this book includes the spatial, political and cultural landscape practices of the apartheid government and also refers to contemporary work done in Australia, England and the US. It probes the uncertainty and ambiguity of identities and cultures in post-apartheid society in order to gain a deep understanding of the history that individuals and society now confront. Drawing on a wealth of research materials including literature, maps, newspapers, monuments, architectural drawings, government legislation, tourist brochures, political writing and oral histories, this book is well illustrated throughout and is a unique commentary on the spatial politics of a time of enormous change.
