Book Synopsis William Holman Hunt and Typological Symbolism (Routledge Revivals) by : George P. Landow

This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, first published in 1979, Landow contends that Hunt’s version of Pre-Raphaelitism concerned itself primarily with an elaborate system of painterly symbolism rather than with a photographic realism as has been usually supposed. Like Ruskin, Hunt believed that a symbolism based on scriptural typology – the method of finding anticipations of Christ in Hebrew history – could produce an ideal art that would solve the problems of Victorian painting. According to Hunt, this elaborate symbolism could simultaneously avoid the dangers of materialism inherent in a realistic style, the dead conventionalism of academic art, and the sentimentality of much contemporary painting. George Landow examines Hunt’s work in the context of this argument and, drawing on much unknown or previously inaccessible material, shows how he used texts, frames, and symbols to create a complex art of mediation that became increasingly visionary as the artist grew older. This book is ideal for students of art history.

Book Synopsis Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision by : Katharine Aileen Lochnan
Download or read book Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision written by Katharine Aileen Lochnan and published by Art Gallery of Ontario. This book was released on 2008 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This abundantly illustrated book accompanies a major exhibition of William Holman Hunt's work. It explores the artist's vision and its relevance to contemporary audiences. Despite the great interest in Pre-Raphaelitism, it has been nearly forty years since the last exhibition devoted to Holman Hunt, one of the founders of the movement. His vision, which inspired the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has lost neither its timeliness or significance." "The book illustrates paintings by Hunt and his associates, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Arthur Hughes, and also includes drawings, prints, photographs and textiles. It examines Hunt's work in the context of the Brotherhood, and his ideas in relation to the artistic, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social issues of his age."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis William Holman Hunt by : Judith Bronkhurst
Download or read book William Holman Hunt written by Judith Bronkhurst and published by Paul Mellon Ctr for Studies. This book was released on 2006 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Holman Hunt was one of the three major artistic talents of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Hunt’s work was always characterized by great seriousness of purpose, and his paintings include many of the most beautiful and powerful images of that midcentury explosion of creativity. This catalogue raisonée gives him the attention he deserves. The book includes an introduction that assesses Hunt’s life and artistic practice and discusses his aims, philosophy, and religious beliefs, which shed light on his works. While many of his paintings, with their extraordinary effects of light and color, are immediately accessible, his mature works incorporate symbolism that cannot be fully understood without a detailed knowledge of his intentions, and the catalogue entries thoroughly explore this. The volume presents Hunt’s oils and works on paper in two separate sections, and appendixes provide additional information on his illustrated letters, etchings, published illustrations, sculpture, and furniture.
