Book excerpt: This dissertation presents three studies exploring mathematics interventions for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including a review of literature and two intervention studies using manipulative based interventions. Specifically, the researcher conducted a systematic review of literature exploring the current state of the literature on mathematics interventions for students with ASD. The results of the systematic review indicated a need for more research in realistic classroom settings (i.e., teacher implemented, small group instruction), and confirmed virtual manipulative-based interventions as an evidence-based practice (EBP). The first singlecase experimental design (i.e., multiple probe across participants) study, which examined the effectiveness of the virtual representational abstract (VRA) instructional sequence when implemented by the classroom teacher to teach three elementary students with ASD to solve addition with regrouping problems. The researcher found a functional relation between the teacher implemented VRA instructional sequence and student accuracy in solving single- or double-digit addition with regrouping problems. The teacher was able to implement the intervention with over 90% treatment fidelity across phases and students. Finally, in the second study the researcher conducted a single case adapted alternating treatments experimental design study comparing the efficacy of a virtual manipulative and a finger counting strategy to teach single digit addition and subtraction without regrouping via small group instruction. The researcher found a functional relation between the virtual manipulative and accuracy however, the finger counting strategy also resulted in increased accuracy compared to baseline. Overall, the dissertation shows that virtual manipulative based interventions are an evidence-based practice and can be successfully implemented by the teacher and in a small group setting for students with ASD.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research thesis is to determine if the computer-aided instructional (CAI) intervention Odyssey Compass Learning would improve math outcomes for nine middle school students with moderate to severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Multiple measures were used to evidence students' baseline prior to the intervention. The Odyssey Compass Learning program was then utilized two time per week for 30 minutes for 6 weeks. Post-assessment data was then gathered. The quantitative data revealed that students improved on both assessments after participating in the intervention. Students' scores increased between 2 to 51 points on the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Rasch Unit Scale (RIT) score, an assessment from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). Seven of the nine students showed substantial improvements. In addition, on the Number Sense and Operation Teacher Assessment, students improved in from one to seven mathematical concept areas. The significance of this research is that the intervention is directly linked to standardized assessment data and provides an individualized learning path for each student providing systematic exposure to the CCSS.

The students in this study were twelve first graders that were identified in need of academic support. In addition to their regular classroom instruction, the students were taught mathematics using the "Do The Math" program. Both students who received the intervention and those who did not were tested on their ability to solve addition and subtraction problems with a pretest. All students continued to receive their usual instruction for an hour each school day, either whole group mathematics instruction along with center based activities or whole group instruction along with the "Do the Math" program. All students were given a post test after the unit was over, and the results of the post tests were compared to the pretests.

Given the limited amount of evidence on teaching procedures derived from the analysis of joint control to teach students with autism, additional investigations on this topic were warranted. Two participants were taught to count a specific number of items from a larger set using a joint control training procedure. Participants were trained to emit a self-echoic rehearsal response. The study utilized a simple multiple-probe-across-participants design. The effects of the joint control training procedure were measured by tracking the cumulative number of trained and untrained responses acquired. Probe data were collected across all conditions of the study. Procedural fidelity data were also collected to ensure the procedures were reliably implemented. The results of the study were presented through line graphs showing the rate of skill acquisition for each participant for trained and untrained responses. This study expanded upon the existing literature on the analysis of joint control. Data from this study suggested that students with autism could acquire novel, untrained responses in the absence of teaching, following the use of a joint control training procedure.

Computer manipulatives, also called virtual manipulatives, may provide interactive environments where students could pose and solve their own problems to form connections between mathematical concepts and operations, and get immediate feedback about their actions. Hence, it is necessary to design specific math manipulatives focusing at different mathematical concepts. Virtual manipulatives might also provide further advantages over physical manipulatives by eliminating some of the constraints they impose on the task. In this paper, virtual manipulatives in mathematics education will be introduced, their main characteristics will be explained and the implications of the usage of virtual manipulatives in mathematics classrooms will be thoroughly discussed.
