Book Synopsis African American Vernacular English as a Literary Dialect by : Sophia Huber
Download or read book African American Vernacular English as a Literary Dialect written by Sophia Huber and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge about one’s linguistic background, especially when it is different from mainstream varieties, provides a basis for identity and self. Ancestral values can be upheld, celebrated, and rooted further in the consciousness of its speakers. In the case of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) the matter is not straightforward and, ultimately, the social implications its speakers still face today are unresolved. Through detailed analysis of the four building blocks phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary, Sophia Huber tries to trace the development of AAVE as a literary dialect. By unearthing in what ways AAVE in its written form is different from the spoken variety, long established social stigmata and stereotypes which have been burned into the consciousness of the USA through a (initially) white dominated literary tradition will be exposed. Analysing fourteen novels and one short story featuring AAVE, it is the first linguistic study of this scope.

Book excerpt: Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a pleasant, soft-spoken, low-key Southerner, and the best hitwoman in the business. Now retired and living in Mexico, she nearly dies herself when a sniper kills her boyfriend, the son of a local druglord, and while the boy's father vows vengeance, Rinker knows something he doesn't: The boy wasn't the target-she was-and now she is going to have to disappear to find the killer herself. The FBI and DEA draft Davenport to help track her down, and with his fiancie deep in wedding preparations, he's really just as happy to go-but he has no idea what he's getting into. For Rinker is as unpredictable as ever, and between her, her old bosses in the St. Louis mob, the Mexican druglord, and the combined, sometimes warring, forces of U.S. law enforcement, this is one case that will get more dangerous as it goes along. And when the crossfire comes, anyone standing in the middle won't stand a chance.... Filled with the rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, Mortal Prey proves that John Sandford just keeps getting better.

Book Synopsis The Novel and The Police by : D. A. Miller
Download or read book The Novel and The Police written by D. A. Miller and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the appearance of D.A. Miller's remarkable book, the Victorian novel has its most dazzling critic in years. . . . Miller's subject is not so much the police in fiction as fiction and policing, narrative as a conservative function of the polis. Tracking diverse strategies of surveillance and incarceration into the confines of the fictional institution itself, Miller investigates Victorian novels as the often unconscious agent of a disciplinary culture. He thus reads fiction reading us, keeping a public in its private place. His mastery of an intricate, layered, and sinuous argument is stunning, the writing no less than superb. For all the book's overarching debt to Foucault, D.A. Miller 'do the police' in a voice all his own."—Garrett Stewart, author of Death Sentences: Styles of Dying in British Fiction
Download or read book The Deporter written by Ames Holbrook and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We have an immigration crisis in our country, all right, and it is a good deal more demonstrably wrong than the millions of illegal immigrants in the shadows. It is costlier to the fabric of American life than the September 11 attacks were. Illogical, deadly, ruinous. Yet none of our leaders is raising a finger to stop it. On the contrary, it is our leaders who drive the destruction.” —Ames Holbrook, from The Deporter The true story of a dedicated deportation officer and his exposé of the worst aspects of U.S. immigration policy As one of fewer than six hundred elite Deportation Officers in the country, Ames Holbrook was assigned to the criminal mecca of New Orleans. He was charged with capturing and expelling some of the most wretched murderers, rapists, and child molesters who were aliens in the United States. But Holbrook was thwarted at nearly every turn…by the same U.S. government that employed him. Why? The reasons will shock and infuriate you. In the course of his compelling story, you will read the truth about how foreign governments treat the United States when agents such as Holbrook try to send criminal aliens back to their homelands. And, even more appalling, how Washington’s political hypocrisy forces the direct release of these criminals into unsuspecting American communities. Like every U.S. Deportation Officer, Ames Holbrook tried to make America safer. Then, when America’s leadership threatened the welfare of innocents, Holbrook rewrote the rules. He won commendations and increased responsibility for his promising results, but all the while, he was fighting a losing battle against the political powers that masqueraded as protectors while actually inflicting tragedy on America’s residents. It is Holbrook’s hope that the revelations in these pages might put America on a path to a safer future.
