Book Synopsis The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman by : Philip Boobbyer
Download or read book The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman written by Philip Boobbyer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman is an in-depth look at the life, spirituality, and ideology of one of the most original figures in twentieth-century religion. Frank Buchman (1878–1961), the Pennsylvania-born initiator of the movement known as the Oxford Group and Moral Re-Armament, was a Lutheran pastor who first had influence as a college evangelist and missionary with the YMCA. His thinking then evolved during the 1930s, the Second World War, and the early Cold War as he tried to develop a world philosophy that could offer an answer to war and materialism. His impact was particularly felt in the areas of conflict resolution between nations and interfaith dialogue, and Alcoholics Anonymous also owed much to his methods. Philip Boobbyer’s book is the first scholarly overview of Buchman’s ideas and is an important addition to the growing corpus of academic literature on his worldwide outreach. Boobbyer shows how his work reflected broader processes in twentieth-century religion and politics and can be seen as a spiritual response to an emerging global society.

Book Synopsis Christ's Person and Life-work in the Theology of Albrecht Ritschl by : Gerald W. McCulloh
Download or read book Christ's Person and Life-work in the Theology of Albrecht Ritschl written by Gerald W. McCulloh and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1990 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines Albrecht Ritschl's presentation of the person and life-work of Christ as Prophet, Priest and King. As father of modern academic theology, Ritschl attempted to present his understanding of the Christian faith through a critical history of the development of doctrine, reexamination of the biblical evidence of belief and exposition of the positive development of doctrine which sought to avoid the critical errors of the past. This agenda proved so demanding that few scholars since Ritschl have been able to work competently in all areas of the discipline. In this work McCulloh identifies characteristic emphases in Ritschl's thought: a definition of religion as a positive historical phenomenon; a critique of the place of metaphysics in theology; an assertion of the importance of the Bible for understanding the Christian faith; a view of the earthly ministry of Jesus as the only meaningful foundation for the knowledge of God; and a claim for the active participation of human beings with God in justification and reconciliation. McCulloh traces the history of the Munus Triplex title into Jewish messianic ascriptions and finds it to be more deeply involved in the historical transmission of the Christian faith than was acknowledged by Ritschl.

Download or read book Twelve Steps for You written by Dick B. and published by Good Book Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The much-awaited work of A.A. Historian Dick B. on the origins of each of the Twelve Steps. First and foremost a history of each step. How each of A.A.'s co-founders contributed to each of the Steps. It looks at the original Akron A.A. program which had no "Steps" and took its basic ideas from the Bible and its principles and practices primarily from the United Christian Endeavor Movement of Dr. Bob's youth. Then--source by source--it looks at each Step as it was impacted upon by a particular contributor. The Bible, Oxford Group, Rev. Sam Shoemaker, Dr. Bob's wife Anne Smith, the so-called "Six Steps, then the other sources. This book is an historical study of the roots of each Step; and it can be used for individual and group study of the Steps in a very meaningful way.It is also a guide. A guide to understanding, and a guide to taking each Step. It also shows you how to take the Steps exactly as directed in A.A.'s Big Book. It suggests how you might look at each Step in terms of the contributions to that Step's lanugage and meaning by each of its sources. Finally, it provides Christians and other students with a means of considering, learning, and "taking" each of the Steps in light of that Step's biblical and historical roots--with the Big Book, Bible, and history at hand. When you are through, you will have a perspective of the real spiritual utility of the Twelve Steps in a believer's world, despite the secularization and universalism that are diluting all Twelve Step programs and the language used in connection with the Steps. For example, "God as we understood Him" historically and biblically means Almighty God, the Creator, as He is understood by the newcomer at the time of taking Steps 3 and 11. So too "powerless" in Step 1 is presented in its historical context ("I was licked") rather than in some puzzling linquistic context, seldom understood or unraveled. You'll know and guide the taking of the Twelve Steps as they were intended to be understood and as you never did before.
