Humboldt leitete mit seinem Konzept der Bildung die Preußischen Bildungsreformen ein. Sie waren Teil der umfassenden Reform des preußischen Staats- und Verwaltungsapparates nach der Niederlage Preußens gegen die Armee Napoleons. Nur aufgrund besonderer zeitgeschichtlicher Wendungen kam Wilhelm von Humboldt in die Verantwortung, die Reformen in der Bildung Preußens zu leiten, wenn auch nur in einem relativ kurzem Zeitraum.1 Humboldt erdachte sich im Konzept der Bildung eine harmonisch integrierte Ganzheit, in der gebildete Individuen in freier Interaktion stehen. Weiterhin stellt Bildung für ihn einen sozialen Prozess dar, da dem Menschen die Aufgabe zukam, sich nicht nur als Einzelperson zu wissen, sondern sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit Anderen einer bestmöglich gedachten, sozial geprägten Individualitätsform anzunähern. Diese Vermittlung zwischen der eigenen Person und Anderen soll vor allem über die Sprache erfolgen, deren Erforschung sich Wilhelm von Humboldt nachhaltig widmete. Die Sprache stellt in der sozialen Vermittlung und in der Darstellung von Individualität eine besondere Rolle dar.2 Die Sprache ist das Werkzeug, mit dessen Unterstützung sich der Mensch die Welt erschließt und aneignet.3 Daher soll sich im Zuge dieser Arbeit genauer mit dem Verständnis der Sprache nach Wilhelm von Humboldt beschäftigt werden und der Frage nachgegangen werden, welcher Bedeutung der Sprache nach Humboldt beigemessen worden ist und wie sie in Beziehung zum Bildungsbegriff dieser Zeit gestanden hat.
