Book Synopsis The Political Economy of the Brazilian State, 1889–1930 by : Steven Topik
Download or read book The Political Economy of the Brazilian State, 1889–1930 written by Steven Topik and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1987-07-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first overview of the Brazilian republican state based on extensive primary source material, Steven Topik demonstrates that well before the disruption of the export economy in 1929, the Brazilian state was one of the most interventionist in Latin America. This study counters the previous general belief that before 1930 Brazil was dominated by an export oligarchy comprised of European and North American capitalists and that only later did the state become prominent in the country’s economic development. Topik examines the state’s performance during the First Republic (1889–1930) in four sectors—finance, the coffee trade, railroads, and industry. By looking at the controversies in these areas, he explains how domestic interclass and international struggles shaped policy and notes the degree to which the state acted relatively independently of civil society. Topik’s primary concern is the actions of state officials and whether their decisions reflected the demands of the ruling class. He shows that conflicting interests of fractions of the ruling class and foreign investors gradually led to far greater state participation than any of the participants originally desired, and that the structure of the economy and of society—not the intentions of the actors—best explains the state’s economic presence.

Book Synopsis Monetary Statecraft in Brazil by : Kurt Mettenheim
Download or read book Monetary Statecraft in Brazil written by Kurt Mettenheim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil has one of the world’s fastest growing economies and a fascinating history underpinning its evolution. This book presents an analysis of the state’s role in monetary policy, from the latter days of Portuguese rule, to the present day. Based on a variety of unknown archival sources, this study offers an alternative explanation for the rise and fall of Brazilian currencies. Monetary statecraft is a theory that accounts for the open ended, autonomous character of politics, the complex, recursive phases of public policy, and political development in the traditional sense of social inclusion. Unfortunately, there are few precedents for this type of analysis. This book fills this gap by tracing how Brazilian policy makers and observers have sought, experimented with, and reflected on a variety of forms and solutions for monetary policy since 1808. This book will be of interest to economists, financial historians and those interested in the history and economy of Brazil.

Book Synopsis A History of Brazilian Economic Thought by : Ricardo Bielschowsky
Download or read book A History of Brazilian Economic Thought written by Ricardo Bielschowsky and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Brazilian economic thought ranging from colonial times through to the early 21st century. It explores the production of ideas on the Brazilian economy through various forms of publication and contemporary thoughts on economic contexts and development policies, all closely reflecting the evolution of economic history. After an editorial introduction, it opens with a discussion of the issue of the historical limits to and circumstances of the production of pure economic theory by Brazilian economists. The proceeding chapters follow the classical periodization of Brazilian economic history, starting with the colonial economy (up until the early 19th century) and the transition into an economy independent from Portugal (1808 through the 1830s) when formal independence took place in 1822. The third part deals with the "coffee era" (1840s to 1930s). The last part covers the "developmentalist" and "globalization" eras (1930–2010). This book is ideal for international and national scholars in social sciences, students in both undergraduate and graduate courses in economics, and any individuals interested in Brazilian economic and intellectual history.

Book Synopsis The Geography of Multinationals (RLE International Business) by : Michael Taylor
Download or read book The Geography of Multinationals (RLE International Business) written by Michael Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of international case studies, the nature and the geographical implications of the development of multinational corporations is examined. The volume concentrates on the latter Post-War period of corporate restructuring and readjustment in response to world-wide recession in the mid-1980s. The volume is divided into two parts. In the first each of the chapters considers a particular aspect of the problem of how multinational corporations have developed. In the second part the chapters consider different aspects of the economic and social impacts of these corporations. The common theme that links all the papers is their emphasis on careful historical analysis of different forms of spatial organisation and their transformation into other, different forms.
