Book excerpt: We all know the basics of punctuation. Or do we? A look at most neighborhood signage tells a different story. Through sloppy usage and low standards on the internet, in email, and now text messages, we have made proper punctuation an endangered species. In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Lynne Truss dares to say, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. This is a book for people who love punctuation and get upset when it is mishandled. From the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, this lively history makes a powerful case for the preservation of a system of printing conventions that is much too subtle to be mucked about with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huge compendium of jokes so filthy, so offensive, so disturbing that this book has been BANNED ON CAMPUS! Millenial Workers A man was warned repeatedly about hiring lazy, know-it-all, crybaby millenials to work in his factory. But he remembered when he was young and just starting out, so he wanted to give them a chance. One morning, one of his tattooed millenials knocked on his office door. "Yes?" he said. "Boss, I have a problem," she said. "What is it?" the boss asked. "Well, I don't think it's appropriate that we test our products on animals. It's cruel." "I realize your generation is very sensitive to these things," the boss said thoughtfully. "But we have to ensure our products are safe before we sell them to consumers. Shampoo companies test on animals, cosmetic companies test on animals. It's a very common practice." "But Boss, we make dildoes!" she exclaimed. Medical Problem A man says to his doctor, "You gotta help me, doc!" The doctor says, "What's your problem?" The guy replies, "Every morning I wake up with my 'morning flagpole', so I give the missus a quick one, then go to work. On the way to work, I car pool with the next door neighbor's wife, who gives me a blow job during the ride to work." The doctor raises his eyebrows. The man continues, "Once I get to work, I do some work, but after about two hours, I go into the photocopy room and haveit off with the one of the young male interns in the office. At lunch I take my secretary out to a hotel and give her a good bonking. Later in the afternoon, I give it to the boss's wife, long and hard." The doctor's mouth falls open. The man continues, "Then I go home and slip the maid a few inches, and then at night I give the missus another screw." "Oh, I see," said the doctor, trying to maintain his composure. "But what exactly is your problem?" The man says, "Well, it hurts when I masturbate."

Book excerpt: From the Whiting Award–winning author of Pretend I’m Dead and one of the most exhilarating new voices in fiction, a “thoroughly delightfully, surprisingly profound” (Entertainment Weekly) one-of-a-kind novel about a cleaning lady named Mona and her struggles to move forward in life. Soon to be an FX television show starring Lola Kirke. Mona is twenty-six and cleans houses for a living in Taos, New Mexico. She moved there mostly because of a bad boyfriend—a junkie named Mr. Disgusting, long story—and her efforts to restart her life since haven’t exactly gone as planned. For one thing, she’s got another bad boyfriend. This one she calls Dark, and he happens to be married to one of Mona’s clients. He also might be a little unstable. Dark and his wife aren’t the only complicated clients on Mona’s roster, either. There’s also the Hungarian artist couple who—with her addiction to painkillers and his lingering stares—reminds Mona of troubling aspects of her childhood, and some of the underlying reasons her life had to be restarted in the first place. As she tries to get over the heartache of her affair and the older pains of her youth, Mona winds up on an eccentric, moving journey of self-discovery that takes her back to her beginnings where she attempts to unlock the key to having a sense of home in the future. The only problems are Dark and her past. Neither is so easy to get rid of. Jen Beagin’s Vacuum in the Dark is an unforgettable, astonishing read, “by turns nutty and forlorn…Brash, deadpan, and achingly troubled” (O, The Oprah Magazine). Beagin is “a wonderfully funny writer who also happens to tackle serious subjects” (NPR).

Do you plan on being highly offended by this book? Remember, just because you find dead baby jokes insensitive and offensive doesn't mean you have the right to ruin the fun for everyone else. Think of it this way: Just because you have a nut allergy, you don't get to ruin the Peanuts movie for everyone else. These are just jokes. Terribly tasteless jokes. But just jokes nonetheless. You know, Freedom of Speech and what not. No actual babies were harmed during the making of this book. So don't get your politically correct panties in a knot. Relax, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to laugh. I won't tell anybody what a sick puppy you are. It'll be our little secret. It's ok to laugh at terrible jokes. Really. (More about that at the end of this book.) Gaspirtz

Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize “A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue.”—The New York Times Book Review A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

Book excerpt: This move back home represented for me another punch and I was reeling with it to the other side of the ring and the other side of the world. It felt like I kept bouncing off the boxing ring ropes. Boing! Boing! I was amazed that I could still feel something after all the punches I was the recipient of. I wished I were numb but I wasn’t. You feel each blow and that is what divorce is. Blow after blow and you being bounced off the sides of the ring in the craziest scheme of things. Total loss of control as your body is flung to all sides like a rag doll. They packed. We smoked. I cried. A Divorcee Divorce is real self-discovery. Isn’t it funny that all the letters of the word Divorce can be found in the word Discovery? Divorce is the catalyst for self-discovery: if life were logical, it would start with a divorce. Divorce is about Separation and Life is a series of successive separations that make up this story, as all of our stories. In my story, the accent may be on divorce, but we can also realize, that in life we all lead divorces. Divorce from a country of origin, a job, living with parents and then with children, our culture, our language, our youth...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people tell dirty jokes? And what is it about a joke's dirtiness that makes it funny? G. Legman was perhaps the foremost scholar of the dirty joke, and as legions of humor writers and comedians know, his Rationale of the Dirty Joke remains the most exhaustive and authoritative study of the subject. More than two thousand jokes and folktales are presented, covering such topics as The Female Fool, The Fortunate Fart, Mutual Mismatching, and The Sex Machine. These folk texts are authentically transcribed in their innocent and sometimes violent entirety. Legman studies each for its historical and socioanalytic significance, revealing what these jokes mean to the people who tell them and to the people who listen and laugh. Here -- back in print -- is the definitive text for comedians and humor writers, Freudian scholars and late night television enthusiasts. Rationale of the Dirty Joke will amuse you, offend you, challenge you, and disgust you, all while demonstrating the intelligence and hilarity of the dirty joke.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Humor, Bad Taste is the first extensive sociological study of the relationship between humor and social background. Using a combination of interview materials, survey data, and historical materials, the book explores the relationship between humor and gender, age, regional background, and especially, humor and social class in the Netherlands. The final chapter focuses on national differences, exploring the differences between the American and the Dutch sense of humor, again using a combination of interview and survey materials. The starting point for this exploration of differences in sense of humor is one specific humorous genre: the joke. The joke is not a very prestigious genre; in the Netherlands even less so than in the US. It is precisely this lack of status that made it a good starting point for asking questions about humor and taste. Interviewees generally had very pronounced opinions about the genre, calling jokes "their favorite kind humor", but also "completely devoid of humor" and "a form of intellectual poverty". Good Humor, Bad Taste attempts to explain why jokes are good humor to some, bad taste to others. The focus on this one genre enables Good Humor, Bad Taste to have a very wide scope. The book not only covers the appreciation and evaluation of jokes by different social groups and in different cultures, and its relationship with wider humor styles. It also describes the genre itself: the history of the genre, its decline in status from the sixteenth century onward, and the way the topics and the tone of jokes have changed over the last fifty years of the twentieth century.
