Book Synopsis Thy Kingdom Come by : Randall Balmer
Download or read book Thy Kingdom Come written by Randall Balmer and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-03-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of American history, evangelicalism was aligned with progressive political causes. Nineteenth-century evangelicals fought for the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, and public education. But contemporary conservative activists have defaulted on this majestic legacy, embracing instead an agenda virtually indistinguishable from the Republican Party platform. Abortion, gay marriage, intelligent design -- the Religious Right is fighting, and winning, some of the most important political battles of the twenty-first century. How has evangelical Christianity become so entrenched in partisan politics? Randall Balmer is both an evangelical Christian and a historian of American religion. Struggling to reconcile the contemporary state of evangelical faith in America with its proud tradition of progressivism, Balmer has headed to the frontlines of some of the most powerful and controversial organizations tied to the Religious Right. With a skillful combination of grassroots organization, ideological conviction, and media savvy, the leaders of the movement have mobilized millions of American evangelical Christians behind George W. Bush's hard-right political agenda. Deftly combining ethnographic research, theological reflections, and historical context, Balmer laments the trivialization of Christianity -- and offers a rallying cry for liberal Christians to reclaim the noble traditions of their faith.

Book Synopsis Taking the Adventure by : Gracia Fay Ellwood
Download or read book Taking the Adventure written by Gracia Fay Ellwood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between faith, especially Christian faith, and a lifestyle that respects animals as our neighbors and kin? Why should faith entail a commitment to vegetarianism? Are animals meant to be heirs of the kingdom of God as well as human beings? Taking the Adventure offers answers to these questions in the context of important biblical themes: of Eden and Exodus, of the prophetic imperative, of Jesus as a prophet proclaiming liberty to the oppressed and the captives, of the feast of the kingdom, of the resurrection and life beyond death. It explores imagery from familiar novels such as A Christmas Carol and The Hobbit that deal with cravings, anxiety, and true abundance. It proposes that committing ourselves to live in God-given peace with all living beings, and sharing with others the good news of that peace, is an adventure worth the best we can give--an arduous and painful, yet joyous adventure climaxing in return to the heart of God.
Download or read book Limitless written by John O'Loughlin and published by Centretruths Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-04-16 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiographical-cum-philosophical journal is intended to complement, if from a vastly more evolved standpoint, the author's fictitious journal 'Limits' (1976), which tended to focus on physical and domestic limits. In 'Limitless', by contrast, there are seemingly few if any such limits, particularly where its philosophical and analytical elements are concerned, and it therefore takes John O'Loughlin's writings to a logical summit which may very well be a conclusion and kind of eschatological apotheosis. For it is doubtful whether he has written anything better.- A Centretruths Editorial
Book Synopsis A Strange Whim of the Sea by : Tim Loughman
Download or read book A Strange Whim of the Sea written by Tim Loughman and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to get a towing line to the stranded submarine USS Flier. The Flier was pulled free six days later, but another three weeks of salvage efforts plagued by rough seas and equipment failures failed to dislodge the Macaw. On February 12, amid huge waves, the ship began to slip aft into deeper water. As night fell and the Macaw slowly sank, the twenty-two sailors on board—ship's captain Paul W. Burton, his executive officer, and twenty enlisted men—sought refuge in the pilothouse, but by 2:30 a.m., that compartment had flooded almost entirely. Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Three men climbed it but most of the others were swept overboard. Five of them died, including Burton. Three sailors from the base at Midway also lost their lives in two unauthorized rescue attempts. Drawing on survivors' contemporaneous written statements and interviews conducted over a span of thirty years, A Strange Whim of the Sea: The Wreck of the USS Macaw traces the ship's service from its launch on San Francisco Bay to its disastrous final days at Midway. Ultimately, for Burton and the Macaw the real enemy was the sea, and in a deadly denouement, the sea won. Highlighting the underreported role auxiliary vessels played in the war, A Strange Whim of the Sea engages naval historians and students alike with a previously untold story of struggle, sacrifice, death, and survival in the World War II Pacific.
