Always engaged in exploring the relationship of the matrilineal peoples of Malawi to its wildlife, Morris has written several important and seminal studies that focus on this relationship: "Common Weeds of Malawi"(1986) "Common Mushrooms of Malawi"(1987) "Chewa Medical Botany"(1996) "The Power of Animals"(1998) "Animals and Ancestors"(2000) And "Insects And Human Life"(2004) All his writings have aimed to bridge the divide between academic scholarship and a wider audience, and combine the perspectives of ethnobiology, environmental history and cultural anthropology. The present book consists of a collection of his various writings on the landscapes and wildlife of Malawi, written over the last forty years, forming the basis of his oral presentations to varied audiences, they are lucidly and engagingly written, and will appeal to scholars, students and all general readers interested in environmental issues and the wildlife of Africa. They represent an enduring contribution to the natural history of Malawi.

It is one of the smallest countries on the African continent, with a total population of around 19.13 million people. The country is bordered by Tanzania to its northeast, Zambia to its west, and Mozambique to its east and south. Malawi is known for its natural beauty, including Lake Malawi, which is the third-largest lake in Africa and the ninth-largest lake in the world. Malawi was previously known as Nyasaland, a British protectorate. The country gained independence in 1964 and has since become a democratic republic with a multi-party political system. Malawi's economy is predominantly agricultural, with a large portion of the population involved in subsistence farming. Despite some economic progress in recent years, Malawi is considered one of the poorest countries in the world, with high levels of poverty, unemployment, and gender inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about home. With Malawi as its focus, it seeks to understand ideas about home as expressed through poetry written by Malawians in English. Although African Literatures are studied those of Malawi have not received agreeable attention. This book surveys poetry by five Malawian writers Felix Mnthali, Frank Chipasula, Jack Mapanje, Lupenga Mphande, and Steve Chimombo. The discussion negotiates scribed experience of exile, engendered by Dr. Bandas regime, and shows that the selected poets effectively converse with a sense of home, reflecting on its transformations in their work. Interrogating the strict definitions of home, the argument highlights that far from home-less exiles in fact clarify the sense of what home is. The manoeuvre is one of thinking towards an unboundaried home. This book will be of value not only to readers interested in the cultures of Africa but to all those with an interest in worldwide literary phenomena, and ideas therein of home and exile.

Book excerpt: Malawi is one of the poorest countries on the globe. Subsistence agriculture remains at the very heart of its social fabric, and also lies at the root of its tremendous poverty. Yet while Malawi is among the worst performers in terms of per capita income and infant mortality, it is also a surprising leader in other areas (such as freedom of the press), has enjoyed over fifty years of relative stability since independence, and still holds great potential for economic development. Bringing together some of the leading experts on the country, this collection offers a comprehensive introduction to contemporary Malawi, encompassing its economy, culture, and politics. An invaluable resource for scholars and development professionals alike, the book assesses the root causes of Malawi's impoverishment, and also offers insight into how the country might break out of its development impasse.

Habitat "corridors" are sometimes proposed as an important element within a conservation strategy. Examples are given of corridors both as pathways and as habitats in their own right. Includes detailed reviews of principles relevant to the design and management of corridors, their place in regional approaches to conservation planning, and recommendations for research and management.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major challenges of sustainable development is the interdisciplinary nature of the issues involved. To this end, a team of conservation biologists, hunters, tourist operators, ranchers, wildlife and land managers, ecologists, veterinarians and economists was convened to discuss whether wildlife outside protected areas in Africa can be conserved in the face of agricultural expansion and human population growth. They reached the unequivocal - if controversial - conclusion that wildlife can be an economic asset, especially in the African savannas, if this wildlife can be sustainably utilized through safari hunting and tourism. Using the African savannas as an example, Wildlife Conservation by Sustainable Use shows that in many instances sustainable wildlife utilization comprises an even better form of land use than livestock keeping. Even when population pressure is high, as in agricultural areas or in humid zones, and wild animal species can pose a serious cost to agriculture, these costs are mainly caused by small species with a low potential for safari hunting. Although ranching has a very low rate of return and is hardly ever profitable, the biggest obstacle to the model of sustainable wildlife use outlined in Wildlife Conservation by Sustainable Use is from unfair competition from the agricultural sector, such as subsidies and lack of taxation, resulting in market distortion for wildlife utilization. This book thus gives valuable evidence for a different way of working, providing arguments for removing such distortions and thereby facilitating financially sound land use and making it a rationally sound choice to conserve wildlife outside protected areas. The expert team of authors, most of whom came together at a workshop to thrash out the ideas that were then developed into the various chapters, has written a superb account of recent research on this complex subject, resulting in a book that is a major contribution to our understanding of sustainable use of land. The important conclusion is that wildlife conservation can be possible for landholders and local communities if they have a financial interest in protecting wildlife on their lands.
