Includes descriptions and histories of every conceivable permanent shelter built for the wilds, from Native American permanent housing to wilderness survival lean-tos. Brush up on your bushcraft skills and build a temporary shelter, find ideas for a fun weekend scout lashing or rope pioneering project, or get inspiration for your future escape home in the woods. Also includes instruction and rich illustrations on how to furnish rustic cabins, as well as the woods tools and axemanship skills necessary to construct each of the shelters described within the book. Learn from "Uncle Dan" Beard, the great woodsman who trained thousands of boys and girls in the ways of the woods and who was instrumental in the formation of the Boy Scouts in the USA! Written by "Uncle" D.C. (Dan) Beard, an authority on outdoors life and woodcraft in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Dan Beard was well respected among America's youth, having written multiple instruction manuals for children on how to have fun in the outdoors and maybe make a little trouble along the way. Many of his tips and ideas for woods life still ring true today. Dan Beard was a key founder in the Boy Scouts movement in America and contributed a significant amount of time and written material to develop its program (including this book). This classic book makes a perfect gift for cabin fanatics, bushcrafters or wilderness survival enthusiasts, scouts or scout leaders, or any outdoorser who wants to build (or dream of building!) a rustic home in the woods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant collection of personal and lyric essays in conversation with archival objects of Black history and memory. What are the politics of nature? Who owns it, where is it, what role does it play in our lives? Does it need to be tamed? Are we ourselves natural? In A Darker Wilderness, a constellation of luminary writers reflect on the significance of nature in their lived experience and on the role of nature in the lives of Black folks in the United States. Each of these essays engages with a single archival object, whether directly or obliquely, exploring stories spanning hundreds of years and thousands of miles, traveling from roots to space and finding rich Blackness everywhere. Erin Sharkey considers Benjamin Banneker’s 1795 almanac, as she follows the passing of seasons in an urban garden in Buffalo. Naima Penniman reflects on a statue of Haitian revolutionary François Makandal, within her own pursuit of environmental justice. Ama Codjoe meditates on rain, hair, protest, and freedom via a photo of a young woman during a civil rights demonstration in Alabama. And so on—with wide-ranging contributions from Carolyn Finney, Ronald Greer II, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Sean Hill, Michael Kleber-Diggs, Glynn Pogue, Katie Robinson, and Lauret Savoy—unearthing evidence of the ways Black people’s relationship to the natural world has persevered through colonialism, slavery, state-sponsored violence, and structurally racist policies like Jim Crow and redlining. A scrapbook, a family chest, a quilt—and an astounding work of historical engagement and literary accomplishment—A Darker Wilderness is a collection brimming with abundance and insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should prove most helpful as a "how to" guide for a man working alone to build a strong, yet simple log cabin made to last. It can be a log cabin that a man can be proud to call his home or for a getaway home away from home on the weekend. I built the 13 by 41 foot cabin shell, including cutting down the trees and peeling off the bark, in three months while camping out in a tent. Cutting down the trees and pilling off the bark took more than half of the time in completing the shell of the cabin. It was hard work, but by using the trees on my property I saved money and it gave me a more satisfying feeling of accomplishment as I lived my dream. After about three months work the cabin was up and we moved from our tents into the cabin, however, the electrical wiring, well and plumbing, septic system, interior walls, chimney, and 8 by 28 foot add-on, which are covered in varying details (less on the wiring and plumbing) in this book, were worked on as I got the time and money. Overall, to complete the cabin, it took about four to five months time. The 757 square foot cabin was completed in about four months by working long hours, six days a week. The long camping experience was an ordeal for my wife, but my son and I enjoyed it. We thank God for His help and guidance through it all. The plans contained in this book are designed to allow a man working alone to build a cabin in a short time that will last a life time. I include an additional chapter about building a pergola type patio cover out of red cedar. 48 pictures are included in this book. Happy trails!
