The Zoo is a complicated organization, full of personali ties and histories, and scarcely an animal or bird is there that has not its own story. I have tried to tell some of these stories and to show in a small way Zoo things that are not ordinarily seen by Visitors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals in Captivity Being an Account of the Habits, Food, Management and Treatment, of the Beasts and Birds at the Zoo: With Reminiscences and Anecdotes I may say that the materials for this work, when placed in my hands, were in such a state of chaos that I began to despair of ever being able to get them into any form for publication, but by careful study of the fragmentary papers and rough notes, I have, I hope, succeeded in my humble efforts to bring together an amount of readable matter which may prove interesting, useful, and instructive to the reader. Much of the matter herein published appeared in land and Water, The Field, Proceedings of the Zoological Society, Punch, and other publications, either anonymously, or under his nom-de - plume D. A. B., and others in his own name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Photographer Boza Ivanovic artfully transforms the traditional animal-visitor dynamic in Out of the Wild. These animals are at once as terrifying as they are hauntingly beautiful. - Special interest for environmentalists, conservationists, animal enthusiasts, and photography fans; Ivanovic has worked for numerous publications, such as National Geographic. Zoos work to preserve nature, protecting animals from the encroaching human presence in their native environments. Cages and glass - these barriers exist to protect both the animals and the visitors. Photographer Boza Ivanovic, however, artfully transforms this dynamic in his latest book, Out of the Wild: Zoo Portraits. His photographs pull viewers past protective boundaries, reinstating a sensation of awe and even fear. Here, zoo animals appear as they do in nature - without the perceived safety of barriers. As a result of his careful presentation, Ivanovic inspires a tension in his viewers. These animals are at once as terrifying as they are hauntingly beautiful. They emerge from the darkness or swoop gracefully toward the lens. Ivanovic's carefully crafted images restore the majesty of these creatures, revealing that there is still a wild spirit in these animals' hearts - whether in the wild or out.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals and the Camera As sport, it is one of the most fasci nating, and I have learned more of the habits and characteristics of wild animals with my camera than gun-shooting could ever have taught me. For years I was a constant, I might almost say daily, visitor to the Zoological Society's Gardens. Every addition to the wonderful collection I studied for days, and sometimes weeks, before capturing it successfully with my camera. Many readers will remember my Illustrated Zoo Notes, published in Animal Life, and my contributions to Living Animals of the World and the chief illustrated weeklies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spread of empires in the nineteenth century brought more than new territories and populations under Western sway. Animals were also swept up in the net of imperialism, as jungles and veldts became colonial ranches and plantations. A booming trade in animals turned many strange and dangerous species into prized commodities. Tigers from India, pythons from Malaya, and gorillas from the Congo found their way—sometimes by shady means—to the zoos of major U.S. cities, where they created a sensation. Zoos were among the most popular attractions in the United States for much of the twentieth century. Stoking the public’s fascination, savvy zookeepers, animal traders, and zoo directors regaled visitors with stories of the fierce behavior of these creatures in their native habitats, as well as daring tales of their capture. Yet as tropical animals became increasingly familiar to the American public, they became ever more rare in the wild. Tracing the history of U.S. zoos and the global trade and trafficking in animals that supplied them, Daniel Bender examines how Americans learned to view faraway places and peoples through the lens of the exotic creatures on display. Over time, as the zoo’s mission shifted from offering entertainment to providing a refuge for endangered species, conservation parks replaced pens and cages. The Animal Game recounts Americans’ ongoing, often conflicted relationship with zoos, decried as anachronistic prisons by animal rights activists even as they remain popular centers of education and preservation.

White Read Aloud Award It started the summer of 2002, when the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo. In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. “She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter.” In no time at all, Molly has them “forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks,” going “wild, simply wild, about wonderful books.” Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits at the Zoo The Cheetah, or hunting leopard, is the most interesting of all the cat tribe. It is found in Arabia, Mesopotamia, Syria, and in West and Southern India; also in Abyssinia, Senegal, and South Africa. The reason that the Cheetah is called the hunting leopard is because 800 years before the Christian Era it was used in the hunting field in India, exactly as it is still used there in the present day. In the British Museum, in some of the Assyrian carvings, you will see a Cheetah catching and killing an antelope. There is another carved stone in the Louvre, in Paris, which also shows that the Cheetah must have been known to the Greeks and Romans. In the East, the hunting qualities of this wild animal were very soon discovered, and the natives trained it carefully to catch antelopes, gazelles, nilgai, deer, and other wild animals. It was found, however, that the Cheetahs must be caught full grown and wild, in order to train them to make good hunters; all efforts to train Cheetah cubs proved useless. This was supposed to be because they had not seen their parents capture and kill their prey. But in Africa the Cheetah is only valued for its skin. The great tribal chiefs, African Kings, and other grand personages, dress themselves up in these skins, and consider themselves very fine indeed. The Cheetah is a tall, slender, graceful creature, with long legs, small loins, a broad chest, and a long tail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A well-written and provocative, opinion-rich account of zoos, their history, and their goals and purposes. Hancocks has earned the right to speak authoritatively about these subjects, thanks to his tenure as director of two leading U. S. zoos. This book will appeal to general readers and to all persons interested in zoos and their role in conservation and education."—John Alcock, author of Animal Behavior: An Evolutionary Approach "Giraffes, elephants, gorillas, snakes, and toucans respond poorly to the usual conventions of human architecture. Zoo architects usually respond no less poorly to the needs of animals. David Hancocks draws on a lifetime's experience working as a zoo director and zoo architect to explore this dilemma, and offers a compelling vision for the future. This is an important book for those interested in conservation as well as for zoo and museum buffs."—William Conway, former President and General Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Bronx Zoo "For over two decades David Hancocks has fervently tried to reform the fundamental character and mission of zoos. This book is his most thorough analysis of what is wrong with them and his most detailed and compelling plea for improvement. Every conscientious zoo administrator, curator, and keeper should read it from cover to cover with an open mind. Professionals in botanical gardens, museums, and nature parks should also consider this treatise because Hancocks advocates that a fusion of all of these institutions into a new entity better positioned to interpret the entire biosphere."-Mark A. Dimmitt, Director of Natural History, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
