Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp-Fire and Wigwam The good mother possessed an education beyond the ordinary, and, knowing its great value, insisted upon her son improving his Spare moments in study. Jack was well informed for his years, for no one could have been blessed with a better teacher, counselor, and friend, than he was. Even now, when we reintroduce him to the reader, he held an Old-fashioned spelling-book in his hand. He had tried to give his attention to his lesson, but, boy-like, his mind persisted in wandering, and his mother, looking fondly across the fire, was so pleased to hear him chat and to ask and answer questions, that she could not find it in her heart to chide him. Book excerpt: Route 66 is a fixture of American culture. For the truckers, salesmen and vacationers who have traveled it and for the people who live along it, the road is a reminder of the bygone days of American motoring. Despite time, neglect and progress, Route 66 endures. Almost all of its 2,448 miles are still intact and drivable. Travel from Chicago to Los Angeles and experience Route 66 through this richly illustrated book, with pictures of many of the historic landmarks and longtime businesses that have become roadside institutions to several generations of Route 66 travelers, plus some that are relatively unknown. Nearly all of the places shown can be visited today. The book is also a salute to those who supported the highway over the years, including Cyrus Avery, Jack Cuthbert ("Mr. 66"), Lucille Hamon and Campbell's 66 Express.

Book excerpt: "The Wigwam Murder" - as the case against August Sangret came to be known - was one of the most brilliant pieces of detection and forensic science then on record. Drs Keith Simpson, Eric Gardner and Gerald Roche Lynch worked together to present a comprehensive body of work that convinced and shocked the jury. It was the first time that a human skull had been produced in a British court room. It belonged to Joan Pearl Wolfe, a nineteen-year-old runaway and vagrant who hung around Canadian army camps, particularly in the Hankley Common, Surrey, area. The man who went to the gallows in April 1943 for the capital crime of murder was August Sangret, a French-Canadian Metis Indian. Despite the amazing forensic work, the evidence against him was purely circumstantial. 'No, sir. I never killed that girl. Somebody did it and I guess I will have to take the rap, ' he said. In this compassionate re-telling of the short and tragic relationship between the two young misfits, M J Trow builds on his reputation as a chronicler of human failings and bringer of the light of day into the cold pragmatism of the courtroom. With a foreword and afterword to give the 21st century reader some additional insight into both the time of the murder and the time of the original research of twenty years ago, this book is a gripping and at times heartrending tale of two lost people in a world torn by war.

Book excerpt: This is a book about baseball’s true “replacement players.” During the four seasons the U.S. was at war in World War II (1942-1945), 533 players made their major-league debuts. There were 67 first-time major leaguers under the age of 21 (Joe Nuxhall the youngest at 15 in 1944). More than 60 percent of the players in the 1941 Opening Day lineups departed for the service. The 1944 Dodgers had only Dixie Walker and Mickey Owen as the two regulars from their 1941 pennant-winning team. The owners brought in not only first-timers but also many oldsters. Hod Lisenbee pitched 80 innings for the Reds in 1945 at the age of 46. He had last pitched in the major leagues in 1936. War veteran and former POW Bert Shepard, with an artificial leg, pitched in one game for the 1945 Senators, and one-armed outfielder Pete Gray played for the St. Louis Browns. The war years featured firsts and lasts. The St. Louis Browns won their first (and last) pennant in 1944 — a feat made more amazing by the fact that they had not finished in the first division since 1929. The 1944 team featured 13 players classified as 4-F. The Chicago Cubs appeared in the 1945 World Series but have not made it back since. Some 53 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) have contributed to this volume. We invite you to sit back and relax as you learn Who's on First?
