Book excerpt: Flags are everywhere, even in our wardrobes. Why are these brightly coloured cloth rectangles so fascinating? Are they fetishistic cult objects, fascinating stereotypes of identity or unsettling signs of power? And how do they fit into the omnivorous iconography of fashion and the anarchy of the creative processes of style? The book, Wig Wag, The Flags of Fashion rides along in the midst of that dense stream of visions and references - sporty, ethnic, patriotic or nostalgic - triggered by flags as a theme and by their relationship with fashion. It tears them away from the immediate association with the concept of nations and follows them through their visual metamorphoses that were created and guided by historic names such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior and Emilio Pucci; designers and brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood, Franco Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Antonio Marras, Alexander McQueen and Viktor & Rolf; and street-style brands, including Mambo, Vans, Eastpak, Gsus, Nigo, Stussy and Ipath. Irony and identity are the driving forces behind the multiple ways in which the flags of the United States, Great Britain and Italy have been appropriated. Fashion also has a place for the colors of Brazil, Jamaica and Japan, red flags, rainbow flags and flags that have no country. The book traverses this explosion of colourful symbols to present the creative processes of a fashion in close contact with cinema, art, design and music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Nation's Report Card, has developed and pilot-tested a variety of hands-on science and mathematics tasks. These tasks were developed as prototypes for use in future national assessments, but the concepts measured and the innovative approaches used are equally suitable for classroom learning. This manual is designed for use by science and mathematics coordinators and teachers to share these techniques. To develop these hands-on activities, NAEP invited the views of science and mathematics educators and worked closely with members of the United Kingdom's Assessment of Performance Unit at Kings College, London University. Tasks were administered as group activities, station activities, and as complete experiments. About 1,000 third-, seventh-, and eleventh-grade students from 12 school districts across four regions of the country were assessed, with approximately 100-300 responses obtained for each task. Results showed that students responded to the tasks, and results conformed to expectations about basic developmental trends in thinking skills. In response to the pilot study, 11 tasks field-tested by NAEP were selected to show a range of possibilities for classroom and assessment use. Each task is presented by thinking skills necessary for successful student performance and the administration mode used by NAEP. Hierarchically arranged tasks are divided into the following sections: (1) classifying; (2) observing and making inferences; (3) formulating hypotheses; (4) interpreting data; (5) designing an experiment, and (6) conducting a complete experiment. The presentation for each task includes a brief explanation of the activity, the student response sheet, a list of the equipment used, and one or more exemplary student responses. (LMO)

Book excerpt: Facing Fearful Odds is based on interviews and correspondence gathered from more than seventy of Wake's American defenders and on research in archival and printed sources. The book covers the planning and political struggles that began Wake Island's transformation into a naval air station and submarine base, the U.S. Navy's eleventh-hour efforts to garrison and fortify Wake, and the various air, sea, and land attacks that resulted in the atoll's capture by the Imperial Japanese Navy. This study attempts to correct the myths that shroud what happened on the atoll. - from preface.

This Code of Practice is the first document within the UK which establishes a series of good practice policies and procedures, obtained from experts, on how effectively to manage the maintenance of fixed location electronic traffic control equipment. The growth of technology in the highways sector has led to improvements in congestion control and a reduction in carbon emissions. Adoptions of the recommendations within this code will help local authorities achieve delivery of high quality services.
