Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests have been at the fault lines of contact between African peasant communities in the Tanzanian coastal hinterland and outsiders for almost two centuries. In recent decades, a global call for biodiversity preservation has been the main challenge to Tanzanians and their forests. Thaddeus Sunseri uses the lens of forest history to explore some of the most profound transformations in Tanzania from the nineteenth century to the present. He explores anticolonial rebellions, the world wars, the depression, the Cold War, oil shocks, and nationalism through their intersections with and impacts on Tanzania’s coastal forests and woodlands. In Wielding the Ax, forest history becomes a microcosm of the origins, nature, and demise of colonial rule in East Africa and of the first fitful decades of independence. Wielding the Ax is a story of changing constellations of power over forests, beginning with African chiefs and forest spirits, both known as “ax–wielders,” and ending with international conservation experts who wield scientific knowledge as a means to controlling forest access. The modern international concern over tropical deforestation cannot be understood without an awareness of the long–term history of these forest struggles.

Book excerpt: "Nothing exemplifies the keen competitive spirit of tournament bridge better than the penalty double. Anytime a final contract is doubled, the stakes are raised not just the score but the implied mano a mano challenge. When you acquire a feel for opportunistic penalty doubles, you have added a potent weapon to your arsenal. Your courage to double freely and wisely will make you a respected and feared opponent. And if the opponents occasionally make a doubled contract against you, be consoled by what a mentor taught me: if they never make a doubled contract, you aren t doubling often enough. This book, like my books on demon doubling and 3NT, is intended for the intermediate and advanced intermediate club and tournament player."--Publisher description

Book excerpt: On everybody’s last day preparing for their final exams in their first semester in college after graduating high school, Michael wakes up at his house from a frat party and finds out he will be late for his exams. He should’ve been studying instead of going to that frat party with his friend Javier. He rushes out of bed while his friends are on a public bus. Giuseppe and Paul are on their way to campus and Karla is nervous about her upcoming exams on the last day of the fall semester until she receives an anonymous text message to go to a beach party. Later on, Karla and Michael meet up with their own gang while Michael’s friend Paul heads off to class while talking about the beach party until they see meteoroids rain down from the sky, shattering buildings. Luckily they survived what was happening but that was only the beginning. Something emerges from the meteorites. What emerges from the meteorites is far worse than anyone could have imagined—horrifying creatures hatching from the eggs during the aftermath. With the world falling into darkness and terror, they must fight for their survival in a nightmare against the unknown creatures in order to stay alive trying to get to their cars, find Paul, and try to escape from campus while they still can.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander the Great, according to Plutarch, carried on his campaigns a copy of the Iliad, kept alongside a dagger; on a more pronounced ideological level, ancient Romans looked to the Aeneid as an argument for imperialism. In this major reinterpretation of epic poetry beginning with Virgil, David Quint explores the political context and meanings of key works in Western literature. He divides the history of the genre into two political traditions: the Virgilian epics of conquest and empire that take the victors' side (the Aeneid itself, Camoes's Lusíadas, Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata) and the countervailing epic of the defeated and of republican liberty (Lucan's Pharsalia, Ercilla's Araucana, and d'Aubigné's Les tragiques). These traditions produce opposing ideas of historical narrative: a linear, teleological narrative that belongs to the imperial conquerors, and an episodic and open-ended narrative identified with "romance," the story told of and by the defeated. Quint situates Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within these rival traditions. He extends his political analysis to the scholarly revival of medieval epic in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to Sergei Eisenstein's epic film, Alexander Nevsky. Attending both to the topical contexts of individual poems and to the larger historical development of the epic genre, Epic and Empire provides new models for exploring the relationship between ideology and literary form.

Book excerpt: In the Summa theologiae, Aquinas attempts to set forth the whole of Christian theology in summary form. It was written, he says, for "the instruction of beginners," but few Christians today have the time or inclination to reach for the five thick volumes that comprise the standard English-language edition. In Holy Teaching, Frederick Bauerschmidt presents some choice selections from the Summa theologiae, along with commentary that unpacks the selections and places them in context. Holy Teaching is an ideal introduction to the work of Aquinas that will give students, pastors, and interested laypeople a greater appreciation for our common Christian inheritance
