Oftmals bekommen Kinder in diesem Zusammenhang das Gefühl "Darüber spricht man nicht!" . Sexualerziehung ist seit der Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) vom 03.10.1968 Teil des Lehrplans einer jeden Grund- und weiterführenden Schule. Auch wenn Sexualerziehung unterrichtet wird, so haben Studien gezeigt, dass das wirkliche Wissen die Sexualität betreffend gerade bei Jugendlichen doch eher gering ist. Da das Einsetzen der Pubertät gegenwärtig immer früher beginnt, bei Mädchen bereits im Alter zwischen acht und 14 Jahren, ist es ratsam bereits im Grundschulalter mit dem Sexualunterricht zu beginnen. Allerdings trifft diese Ansicht nicht bei jedem auf Zustimmung. Zu groß ist die Angst, dass Kinder durch Aufklärung in der Grundschule auf die Idee kommen könnten noch früher sexuelle Erfahrungen sammeln zu wollen. Jedoch zeigt sich, dass eine Partnerschaft und die dazu gehörenden Gefühle immer noch maßgeblich an Sexualität beteiligt sind. Des Weiteren liegen die Ursachen für das Sammeln von sexuellen Erfahrungen nicht an der angeblich zu frühen Aufklärung, sondern an äußeren Einflüssen wie das Geschlecht, Bildung, Familie, das nähere Umfeld (vor allem die Massenmedien), sowie die Charaktereigenschaften der betreffenden Person selbst. Gerade aus der Tatsache heraus, dass Kinder und Jugendliche so vielen Einflussfaktoren ausgesetzt sind, macht die schulische Sexualaufklärung unabdingbar. Fände diese nicht statt, würden sich viele Schüler mit ihren Gefühlen und ihrer natürlichen Neugier allein gelassen fühlen.
