Book excerpt: A hybrid method that combines the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) is developed to analyze electromagnetic scattering from arbitrarily shaped material cylinders. By this method, the material cylinder is first enclosed by a fictitious boundary. Maxwell's equations are then solved by FEM inside and by BEM outside the boundary. Electromagnetic scattering from several arbitrarily shaped material cylinders is computed and compared with results obtained by other numerical techniques.

Book excerpt: A method for the computation of electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary two-dimensional bodies is presented. The method combines the finite element and boundary element methods leading to a system for solution via the conjugate gradient Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. Two forms of boundaries aimed at reducing the storage requirement of the boundary integral are investigated. It is shown that the boundary integral becomes convolutional when a circular enclosure is chosen, resulting in reduced storage requirement when the system is solved via the conjugate gradient FFT method. The same holds for the ogival enclosure, except that some of the boundary integrals are not convolutional and must be carefully treated to maintain O(N) memory requirement. Results for several circular and ogival structures are presented and shown to be in excellent agreement with those obtained by traditional methods. Book excerpt: Several techniques that influence the low frequency scattering from penetrable edge terminations are evaluated using a hybrid finite element and boundary element method code. The edge terminations consist of a dielectric skin forming an exterior shape with an internal conducting bulkhead. Some of the techniques considered are bulkhead shaping, internal material loading, placement of resistive cards, and the placement of lossy dielectric material rods. The intent of the various treatments is to find a combination or combinations that influence(s) the backscattered field to acceptable levels over a range of frequencies for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations. Book excerpt: The problems and techniques addressed under the present contract deal with issues of analysis and computation in electromagnetics. The primary goal consists of the development of efficient numerical tools for the prediction of scattered fields in a number of practical configurations. For this, substantial effort will be devoted to the extension and enhancement 0 the Method of Variation of Boundaries (MVB). Specific objectives in connection with MVB include: (1) advancement and implementation of algorithmic improvements for very high-order calculations; (2) application to the solution of eigenvalue problems (related to cavities, resonators and waveguides); to the calculation of electromagnetic scattering from damaged objects and rough terrain; and to inverse scattering problems. (3) Concurrent with these endeavors the program will pursue the incorporation of the boundary-variation approach in more classical computational techniques, such as the finite-element methods (FEM). A first instance of such interactions will be sought through the implementation of high-order boundary perturbation approximations to computational radiation conditions (typically imposed on separable geometries). To enable and enhance such applications, the plan includes the development of new (high-order) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element approach to electromagnetic scattering calculations which is expected to provide an advantageous setting for adaptivity and parallelization. Alternative high-order methods (e.g., based on integral equation formulations) will also be considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we consider an impenetrable cylindrical scatterer surrounded by a heterogeneous dielectric coating. We present a numerical scheme for reconstructing the refractive index of the heterogeneous medium using far field data. The numerical scheme is based only on the mild assumption that the inhomogeneous medium is contained inside a circular cylinder, and does not require axis-symmetry or other similar restrictions. Moreover, we only require the boundary of the scatterer to be piecewise smooth. We reformulate this inverse problem as a nonlinear equation, which we then solve using a regularised Newton-type solver. The key innovation is performing nonlinear function evaluations, which involve solving a forward scattering problem, using an effcient coupled finite-element/boundary element method (FEMBEM) for the heterogeneous Helmholtz equation, which ensures that the important radiation condition is incorporated exactly. We derive an analytic representation for the Fréchet derivative for the heterogeneous dielectric coated scatterer, which we effciently compute using a novel extension of the coupled FEM-BEM scheme. The scheme is then demonstrated by reconstructing challenging continuous and discontinous media from noisy far field data.

Book excerpt: The least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is applied to electromagnetic scattering and radar cross section (RCS) calculations. In contrast to most existing numerical approaches, in which divergence-free constraints are omitted, the LSFF-M directly incorporates two divergence equations in the discretization process. The importance of including the divergence equations is demonstrated by showing that otherwise spurious solutions with large divergence occur near the scatterers. The LSFEM is based on unstructured grids and possesses full flexibility in handling complex geometry and local refinement Moreover, the LSFEM does not require any special handling, such as upwinding, staggered grids, artificial dissipation, flux-differencing, etc. Implicit time discretization is used and the scheme is unconditionally stable. By using a matrix-free iterative method, the computational cost and memory requirement for the present scheme is competitive with other approaches. The accuracy of the LSFEM is verified by several benchmark test problems. Wu, Jie and Jiang, Bo-nan Glenn Research Center NCC3-483; RTOP 505-90-5K...
