Book excerpt: Fourth generation cellular networks offer performance similar to cable modems while allowing wide mobility. Although the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing in fourth generation increases its spectral efficiency but it also increases the peak-to-average power ratio of the transmitted signal. If a conventional power amplifier is used to transmit a high peak-to-average power ratio signal, then to meet the stringent linearity requirements, it will be operating 6 to 10 dB back-off from the maximum output power. This is the region where power amplifier has lower efficiency. To overcome the low efficiency problem, the envelope tracking power amplifier architecture has been proposed in the literature due to its feature of high efficiency over a wide power range. The overall efficiency of the envelope tracking system is the product of the power amplifier efficiency and the envelope amplifier efficiency, which provides the dynamically varying power supply voltage. This dissertation focuses on developing high efficiency envelope amplifiers for wideband applications. First, a CMOS envelope amplifier is developed which cuts the quiescent power dissipation by half over the conventional designs and also employs more accurate current sensing. In order to further improve its efficiency, a dynamic supply is provided on the linear amplifier, which improves the overall efficiency by 6% in measurements. Secondly, modeling of power amplifier operating under envelope shaping is described, in order to accurately predict the efficiency of the envelope amplifier. Also, the stability of the envelope amplifier is analyzed under nonlinear resistive load operation. The overall envelope tracking system achieves a record high efficiency of 43% for 20 MHz LTE signal using a GaAs power amplifier. Finally, another new architecture for CMOS envelope amplifier is developed for efficiency enhancement, using deadband controller. A linearized describing function analysis is done on the proposed architecture, to predict the frequency responses of each block, which matches pretty well with the simulations. The stacked implementation of linear and switching amplifiers allows 6V supply while using all 3.3V devices for them. This leads to integration of envelop amplifiers into submicron CMOS processes.

Book excerpt: The latest generation of smart devices deployed in cellular networks has created explosive growth in network data traffic, and the increasing demand for broadband services with higher data rates, require higher peak to average power ratio (PAPR) with wider bandwidth. One of the challenges in the conventional power amplifiers (PAs) with fixed supply voltage, is the degraded efficiency and generated heats at a large back-off to meet tight linearity requirements. This dissertation presents high efficiency wideband envelope tracking power amplifiers for 2.1 GHz micro base-stations and 2.5 GHz wireless mobile applications. By superimposing the envelope signal at the drain such that the RF amplifier operates consistently closer to saturation, the overall efficiency is improved and the generated heat is reduced dramatically. In the first part of the dissertation, a high performance BiCMOS DMOS monolithic envelope amplifier for micro-base station power amplifiers is presented. Due to the low breakdown voltage of the CMOS transistors, the high voltage envelope amplifier has been implemented with discrete components with high voltage process. Compared to these discrete solutions, an integrated circuits implementation for the envelope amplifier brings many benefits. The design of monolithic envelope amplifiers for high voltage (VDD = 15 V) envelope tracking applications, and the design techniques to solve the reliability issues with thin gate oxide is described. The overall envelope tracking system employing a GaN-HEMT RF transistor, and fully integrated high voltage envelope amplifier with a 0.35[mu]m BiCMOS DMOS process, is demonstrated. In the second part, a high-efficiency wideband envelope tracking power amplifier for mobile LTE applications will be presented. The CMOS envelope amplifier with hybrid linear and switcher is designed in a 150 nm CMOS process. The envelope amplifier employs direct sensing of the linear stage current to reduce the propagation delay in the switcher. The strategy is demonstrated to improve the efficiency of the complete envelope tracking power amplifier system. The resulting performance of envelope tracking system employing a GaAs HBT-based RF PA with a 5 MHz LTE signal input demonstrated state-of-the-art efficiency while meet the linearity requirement.

Book excerpt: Reconfigurable RF Power Amplifiers on Silicon for Wireless Handsets is intended to designers and researchers who have to tackle the efficiency/linearity trade-off in modern RF transmitters so as to extend their battery lifetime. High data rate 3G/4G standards feature broad channel bandwidths, high dynamic range and critical envelope variations which generally forces the power amplifier (PA) to operate in a low efficiency “backed-off” regime. Classic efficiency enhancement techniques such as Envelope Elimination and Restoration reveal to be little compliant with handset-dedicated PA implementation due to their channel-bandwidth-limited behavior and their increased die area consumption and/or bill-of-material. The architectural advances that are proposed in this book circumvent these issues since they put the stress on low die-area /low power-consumption control circuitry. The advantages of silicon over III/V technologies are highlighted by several analogue signal processing techniques that can be implemented on-chip with a power amplifier. System-level and transistor-level simulations are combined to illustrate the principles of the proposed power adaptive solutions. Measurement on BICMOS demonstrators allows validating the functionality of dynamic linearity/efficiency management. In Reconfigurable RF Power Amplifiers on Silicon for Wireless Handsets, PA designers will find a review of technologies, architectures and theoretical formalisms (Volterra series...) that are traditionally related to PA design. Specific issues that one encounters in power amplifiers (such as thermal / memory effects, stability, VSWR sensitivity...) and the way of overcoming them are also extensively considered throughout this book.

Book excerpt: High efficiency radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) are critical in portable battery-operated wireless communication systems because they can dominate the power consumption. Linear power amplifier is required for envelope modulated signal. Traditionally, linear power amplifiers are implemented by "backing-off" the Class-A or Class-AB PA. However for a high peak-to-average (PAR) signal, the average efficiency is much lower than the peak efficiency, which is well down as the inherent trade-off between linearity and efficiency. This dissertation focuses on Envelope Elimination and Restoration (EER) and Envelope Tracking (ET) efficiency enhancement techniques to improve the PA average efficiency for high PAR signal. The EER and ET PA structures are investigated. Wideband ET and "hybrid" EER structures are proposed for WLAN 802.11g signal at 20MHz signal. Two major challenges of the wideband EER and ET PAs are investigated: 1) An adaptive time-alignment algorithm was proposed to calibrate the time-mismatch in wideband EER and ET systems; (2) A high efficiency wideband envelope amplifier is designed for wideband EER and wideband ET applications. A monolithic wideband high efficiency ET power amplifier is designed and implemented for WLAN 802.11g applications in IBM SiGe BiCMOS technology. Digital pre-distortion was implemented to reduce the EVM of the amplifier. The measured overall power-added efficiency of the amplifier is 28% at 20 dBm (100mW) output power.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA) is the last block in a transmitter chain. It amplifies the signal to the target power and drives the antenna. The power amplifier consumes the largest portion of the transmitter current consumption budget, and any power saving in this block will significantly improve the overall system efficiency. This is especially critical in battery-operated portable wireless communication systems such as cellular phones, PDA's and laptops. There is a trade-off between efficiency and linearity in power amplifiers. Non-switching power amplifiers efficiency increases as the output power increases, but so does the amplifier distortion. This is more problematic in modern wireless communication systems, where spectrally efficient and high data rate modulations are used and the linearity requirement is hard to meet. The two common approaches of backing-off the output power and adding a linearization scheme have their own challenges. The first one results in efficiency loss and the second one adds to the system complexity and has design challenges for wideband applications. The design of highly efficient and linear RF power amplifiers has been the subject of several studies. Different techniques have been proposed to overcome the challenge. Dynamic control of the power amplifier quiescent current, dynamic control of the load impedance, output harmonic control and dynamic supply voltage control (envelope tracking) are the popular proposed techniques. Despite the fact that the envelope tracking technique has gained momentum as an attractive efficiency enhancement method for handset applications, its implementation still faces challenges. This technique needs a high efficiency envelope amplifier to achieve good overall efficiency. The design of a small, efficient and wideband envelope amplifier is very challenging. Usually these amplifiers require external components and if they are in the switching mode they can add disturbance to the rest of the system. This research focuses on a technique that overcomes this main challenge of the ET amplifier design and is organized as follows : Chapter 1 is the introduction and discusses the motivation of this research and some of the prior art. Chapter 2 explains the proposed technique to enhance the RF power amplifiers efficiency in high peak-to-average power ratio applications. This technique is based on controlling the baseband drain impedance by adding an envelope termination to the PA supply, and applying the baseband envelope signal to the input. As a result, the amplifier operates closer to its saturated region for all envelope amplitudes, and its efficiency is improved. A digital predistortion scheme is implemented to compensate for the linearity degradation of the proposed technique. A 1.95GHz HFET power amplifier exhibits an improvement in peak PAE from 40% to 56% for a two-tone input, from 33% to 42% for an uplink WCDMA with one dedicated physical data channel and from 27% to 32% for an uplink WCDMA with six dedicated physical data channels using the proposed technique. Chapter 3 shows some improvements to the proposed technique including adding envelope equalization. The envelope equalization also improves the amplifier linearity since it reduces the distortion from clipping the output signal due to non-ideal dynamic supply. The linearity of the implemented amplifier is studied in a large-signal fashion. This technique improves the maximum efficiency from 28% to 40% for an uplink WCDMA signal with six dedicated physical data channels and the maximum linear efficiency from 21% to 28%. Also, a scheme to vary the DC power supply with the average power to maintain high efficiency down to a low average power region is proposed. Chapter 4 studies envelope feedback systems stability. The stability criteria are derived based on the Lyapunov stability theorem for time-varying systems and the tool of linear matrix inequality (LMI). The effects of system parameters on the stability are investigated. The system is simulated in Simulink and implemented, and stability boundaries predicted by LMI are in good agreement with the simulation and measurement results. Chapter 5 concludes the dissertation and suggests some future work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to meet the increasing demand for higher data rates while maximizing spectral efficiency, modern wireless communication systems transmit complex non-constant envelope modulation signals with high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). As a result, conventional power amplifiers must be operated in back-off, leading to a significant efficiency reduction. Various power amplifier architectures (i.e. Doherty, outphasing, and envelope tracking) have been demonstrated to achieve high efficiency for these high PAPR signals. Unlike the other architectures, the envelope tracking power amplifier (ETPA) makes an excellent candidate for multi-band multi-frequency use, while maintaining high efficiency for high PAPR and under average power back-off, as it is fundamentally immune to changes in the frequency of the carrier; it depends only on the envelope of the RF signal. This dissertation focuses on the design of envelope tracking power amplifiers for enabling broadband wireless communication systems. First, a test-bench for evaluating broadband ETPAs is described. A calibration routine, acting as a pre-equalizer, is used to achieve a flat linear response over the entire instantaneous bandwidth of the system, resulting in less than 1% EVM for a 40 MHz LTE signal. Performances of envelope tracking power amplifiers on this test-bench at various frequencies from UHF to millimeter-wave are evaluated, and record efficiencies are demonstrated. Next, this dissertation describes how in under practical usage, the power transmitted fluctuates as a function of the load demands over time. The long-term efficiency of the ETPA is evaluated using Monte-Carlo simulations based on a projected time-varying power profile. Compared to a Doherty PA with the same peak efficiency, the ETPA can provide more than 1.4x reduction in overall energy consumed. The ETPA thus provides significant opportunities for system energy savings under realistic operation. Thirdly, to accommodate the wide range of carrier frequencies required for numerous emerging wireless systems, a multi-octave RFPA based on a compact GaN stacked IC with RC feedback is designed, fabricated, and evaluated. Multi-octave ET operation was demonstrated from 500 to 1750 MHz with >25% efficiency. Compared to its constant drain voltage counterpart, >2x improvement in RFPA efficiency is observed in ET. Lastly, while the ETPA provides advantages such as broad carrier bandwidths and high efficiency under back-off operation, one of the main challenges in ETPA design lies in accommodating wide modulation bandwidths. Adaptive de-troughing, a digital signal processing approach for extending the modulation bandwidth capability of an existing dynamic power supply, is described and evaluated. Measurements demonstrated the ability to extend ET operation to 20 MHz LTE signals. In addition, ~5-6% modulator efficiency enhancement was measured when comparing "standard" to "adaptive" de-troughing supply waveforms.

Book excerpt: Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF deals with the complicated issues involved in the design of high-linearity integrated wideband amplifiers for different operating frequencies. The book demonstrates these principles using a number of high-performance designs. New topologies for high linearity are presented, as well as a novel method for estimating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal. One of the most exciting results presented is an enhanced feedback configuration called feedback boosting that is capable of very low distortion. Also important is a statistical method for relating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a single tone. The THD, as opposed to the intermodulation distortion of the wideband signal, is easy to measure and use as a design parameter. Three different applications where high linearity is needed are identified, namely audio power amplifiers, wideband IF amplifiers and RF power amplifiers. For these applications high-performance integrated amplifier designs using novel topologies are presented together with measurement results. The audio amplifiers are built in CMOS and are capable of driving 8Omega loudspeaker loads directly without using any external components. One of the designs can operate on a supply voltage down to 1.5V. Both bipolar and CMOS wideband IF amplifiers are built; they are fully differential and have linearity from DC to 20 MHz. Finally, an RF power amplifier is built in CMOS, without using inductors, in order to investigate what performance can be achieved without them. Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF is an excellent reference for researchers and designers of integrated amplifiers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Book excerpt: Envelope tracking (ET), which is a dynamic supply control technology to realize high efficiency power amplifiers, is a promising approach for base-station transmitters of the future. The envelope amplifier (EA) in ET systems provides a non-constant modulated power supply to the RF transistor. It is challenging to design so that it is both broadband and high efficiency, while meeting the stringent linearity requirements for high peak-to-average ratio signals in modern wireless communication systems. This thesis focuses on EA design and implementation for efficiency enhancement of ET systems with broadband envelope input signals. First, the ET system architecture is analyzed, and the efficiencies of RF transistors and envelope amplifiers are described. Secondly, the principles of the EA operation are investigated, and each circuit stage is carefully designed for broadband signals. Then, an EA model, including the RF transistor load, is developed in PSpice, and many simulations are described in order to better analyze and design the broadband EA for high efficiency. After the design, a broadband EA is implemented on a PCB board. The testing with constant resistive loads is carried out to verify the function and measure the efficiencies of 5 MHz WCDMA and 20 MHz LTE-A downlink envelope signals. Finally, tests on the whole ET system are performed, and the overall drain and power added efficiencies are tabulated. For this broadband envelope amplifier, the efficiency for a 5 MHz WCDMA input signal is above 75%, and for 20 MHz LTE-A, it works robustly with an efficiency of 62%.
