Book excerpt: The introduction of the SiC substrate and the demonstration of bright III-N light-emitting diodes were catalysts for a large increase in research and development of wide-bandgap semiconductor materials and devices during the nineties. This symposium, "Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors for High-Power, High-Frequency and High-Temperature Applications-1999," from the 1999 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, California, focused on high-power, high-frequency and high-temperature applications of these wide-bandgap semiconductors. The symposium attracted a wide range of researchers who presented 120 papers in nine different sessions on topics such as bulk crystal growth, epitaxy, materials characterization, processing, and devices.

Book Synopsis Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors for High Power, High Frequency and High Temperature: Volume 512 by : Steven Denbaars
Download or read book Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors for High Power, High Frequency and High Temperature: Volume 512 written by Steven Denbaars and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-bandgap semiconductors have a long and illustrious history, starting with the first paper on SiC light-emitting diodes published in 1907. Since then, interest in wide-bandgap semiconductors has skyrocketed. Improved material quality, important breakthroughs both in SiC and GaN technologies, and the emergence of blue GaN-based lasers, have stimulated this progress. To provide a fairly complete picture of this important field, most of the work presented at the conference is included in the volume. In addition, invited papers present an excellent overview of the current state of the art and offer projections for future developments. Topics include: GaN materials and devices; crystal growth; SiC materials and devices; characterization of wide-bandgap semiconductors; and processing characterization and properties of wide-bandgap materials.
Book Synopsis Materials for High-Temperature Semiconductor Devices by : National Research Council
Download or read book Materials for High-Temperature Semiconductor Devices written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-09-14 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major benefits to system architecture would result if cooling systems for components could be eliminated without compromising performance. This book surveys the state-of-the-art for the three major wide bandgap materials (silicon carbide, nitrides, and diamond), assesses the national and international efforts to develop these materials, identifies the technical barriers to their development and manufacture, determines the criteria for successfully packaging and integrating these devices into existing systems, and recommends future research priorities.

Download or read book Silicon Carbide written by Wolfgang J. Choyke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1997 publication of "Silicon Carbide - A Review of Fundamental Questions and Applications to Current Device Technology" edited by Choyke, et al., there has been impressive progress in both the fundamental and developmental aspects of the SiC field. So there is a growing need to update the scientific community on the important events in research and development since then. The editors have again gathered an outstanding team of the world's leading SiC researchers and design engineers to write on the most recent developments in SiC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique materials properties of GaN-based semiconductors havestimulated a great deal of interest in research and developmentregarding nitride materials growth and optoelectronic andnitride-based electronic devices. High electron mobility andsaturation velocity, high sheet carrier concentration atheterojunction interfaces, high breakdown field, and low thermalimpedance of GaN-based films grown over SiC or bulk AlN substratesmake nitride-based electronic devices very promising.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on gallium nitride (GaN) and associated materials focuses on advances in basic science, as well as the rapidly maturing technologies involving blue/green light emitters, detectors and high-power electronics. A highlight is a report on wide-bandgap semiconductor research done in Europe. Also reported is the commercialization of a laser operating at 405nm wavelength with a 4000-hour device lifetime. At 450nm emission wavelength, significant reductions in lifetime were found, and are believed to arise from nonideal properties of the InGaN alloy used in the active layer of the device. Additional topics include: the significant success of transistors for microwave applications; improvements in the epitaxy of GaN, using both selective area growth techniques (lateral epitaxy overgrowth) and introducing low-temperature intralayers in the films; advances in both molecular beam epitaxy and metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, including several studies of quantum dot formation in strained alloys and improvements in hydride vapor phase epitaxy, particularly for providing very thick films.
