Book excerpt: Why Aren't They There? is a comprehensive study of political representation in a cross-national format, making a cross-country comparison of the representation of women, ethnic groups, and policy positions. It includes an analysis of the representation of women over time, and presents a critical view of the effectiveness of quotas. Using new data on ethnic groups in legislatures, it makes a significant step forward in the analysis of political representation. The representation of issue positions is examined in eight policy domains, and the book's systematic approach allows a groundbreaking examination of how different forms of representation – women, ethnic groups, issue positions – are interlinked. Didier Ruedin examines aspects unattainable in studies focusing only on a single form of representation. The result is a comprehensive understanding of political representation, and important and policy-relevant insights for electoral engineering.

Book excerpt: Co-published with Despite seeming endless debate and public attention given to the issue for several decades, those committed to creating welcoming and engaging campus environments for all students recognize that there is considerably more work to be done, and ask “Why aren’t we there yet, and when will we be done?” While our campuses have evolved from being exclusionary and intolerant, and publicly espouse the objectives of being welcoming, accepting, affirming, and engaging, the data on admissions, retention, and graduation clearly indicate that these goals have not been achieved. The contributors to this book seek to offer new insights to improve student affairs, emphasizing action that recognizes this is a complex and multi-faceted process, and beginning with the assertion that, without recognizing the influences of privilege and inequality, we educators cannot promote truly welcoming environments. This book focuses on guiding individuals and groups through learning how to have difficult conversations that lead us to act to create more just campuses, and provides illustrations of multiple ways to respond to difficult situations. It advocates for engaging in fruitful dialogues regarding differing social identities including race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexual orientation, to lead readers through a process that advocates for justice, and for taking personal responsibility for contributing to the solution. The book is framed around the five elements of the process of engaging in difficult conversations that not only advocate for change but also create change: self knowledge, knowledge of and experiences with others, understanding historical and institutional contexts, understanding how to change the status quo, and transformative action.

Some are long; others are short. They move in all directions, at different speeds and intensities. Inevitably, they crisscross, intersect and collide. “Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole.” Is it chance that the right people are at the right place at the right time when we need them? Or does an unseen hand number our days and order our steps?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often times we find a passage of scripture that contains a biblical "if," a scripture that gains our attention and calls us to consider the choices presented to us by those "ifs." In each instance, we find an invitation to consider what pleases God. They clarify the safety that is offered through the narrow way, as opposed to the broad road full of high speed limits and flashing signs. Are you personally concerned that traveling the super highway leads to destruction and that only the narrow and more difficult road leads to life everlasting? This book will explain twenty-two biblical "ifs" that will help you discover the pitfalls of disobedience, and the joy and blessings that will be yours when you choose to stay on the narrow road and obey. As you begin this study you will explore these "ifs" and many more: - Jesus' declaration, "If" anyone is ashamed of Me or My message ... - "If" we forgive others... - "If" we love God... - "If" any two will agree... - "If" we walk in the light... Search the scriptures and explore God's directions for the richest blessings in your life, the blessings of a meaningful and fulfilling family relationship with Him!

But very rarely have I been told to bag for the guest. This seems funny to me. Now if they wanted to tell me to take over for the other employee or the guest(s), that would make sense, but the easy, lazy way to communicate seems to be the only way they know how. Youd think someone that has the skills to do this job would at least know the difference between bagging for the cashier, etc., and the guests

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story told through the eyes of an Officer who served twenty-two months aboard the LST. The ship was scheduled for a six-month tour in the Mediterranean. On January 7, 1952, the ship sailed into a devastating storm, and six hours later, they were losing cargo overboard. In addition to the loss of cargo, the ship is plagued with a navigator threatened with failure to carry out a direct order. In Malta, the LST hits two water barges and one British LCM. Two crewmen were fighting in Naples return to the ship, where one stabs the other; the LST collides with the refueling tanker; two crewmen fighting aboard ship and one threatens the Exec; forty crewmen end up fighting on the main deck; and a duty officer nearly falls overboard. Finally, the ship is beached in Terceria with a large hole in the bottom of its hull. As if that’s not enough, the Captain and Exec bring lady friends aboard the ship; the crew attempts to sail without the Captain and Exec and end up sailing into a force 3 hurricane. Captain Black Mark is the story of all these things. As incredible as it sounds, is it any wonder that the captain develops irrational fixations that his superiors were aware of everything that was happening and that it was these things that prevented him from being promoted.

Book excerpt: Equal Sharestells a fascinating story-the history of a group of dynamic tapestry workers who changed the economic life of their community. The authors examine a key community-based cooperative in Botswana that was launched in the early 1970s, and is hailed as a model for development and social change. With little formal education, virtually no job experience, still working their own agricultural lands, and many as single mothers, the co-op workers have maintained their business for over twenty-five years. Equal Sharesis written in different voices, and tells the story of the defining moments in the lives of the Oodi Weavers. As the workers weave their village stories into the tapestries, the book weaves a story that depicts their evolving collective experience. It's a model of community action. Inspiring reading for all those fighting to take control of their economic lives.
