Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in Pennsylvania: A Biographical Dictionary of Contemporaries Who's Who in Pennsylvania is presented in a Second Edition, after an interval of four years since the publication of the First, with u view to make it a more complete and up-to-date presentation of personal statistics of those citizens of the Commonwealth whose lives and careers are of the greatest interest, and who are taking the most active and influential part in the progress and development of the State. The former edition met with wide and generous recognition, and the present one, endeavoring to present not only such new names of importance as have achieved distinction in the interim, but also to give more perfect accounts of those whose life-sketches have been retained from the First Edition, is believed to be a marked improvement over its predecessor, the original volume. The utility of what are known as Who's Who books, of which the London Who's Who, now in its sixtieth year of successful annual publication, may be regarded as the progenitor, is now everywhere recognized, the Germans and French having entered the field for their respective countries. The application of the idea to Die representation of the notables of a single State began with the publication of "Who's Who in New York City and State," by L. R. Hamersly & Co. (of which the Fourth Edition is now in preparation), followed by the issue from the same publishing house of "Who's Who in Pennsylvania." The present edition is virtually a new book, such matter as has been retained from the former issue having been in almost every case rewritten, amplified or condensed as seemed to most appropriate to the purpose of the publication, which is to furnish a complete, accurate and reliable biographical dictionary of contemporary Pennsylvanians. The greatest care has been taken to make authentic the records contained in this volume. The data, in almost every instance, have been secured from first hands, and the sketches, when completed, have been submitted in each case to the subject for verification or amendment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most American cities are now administered by appointed city managers and governed by councils chosen in nonpartisan, at-large elections. In the early twentieth century, many urban reformers claimed these structures would make city government more responsive to the popular will. But on the whole, the effects of these reforms have been to make citizens less likely to vote in local elections and local governments less representative of their constituents. How and why did this happen? Ariane Liazos examines the urban reform movement that swept through the country in the early twentieth century and its unintended consequences. Reformers hoped to make cities simultaneously more efficient and more democratic, broadening the scope of what local government should do for residents while also reconsidering how citizens should participate in their governance. However, they increasingly focused on efficiency, appealing to business groups and compromising to avoid controversial and divisive topics, including the voting rights of African Americans and women. Liazos weaves together wide-ranging nationwide analysis with in-depth case studies. She offers nuanced accounts of reform in five cities; details the activities of the National Municipal League, made up of prominent national reformers and political scientists; and analyzes quantitative data on changes in the structures of government in over three hundred cities. Reforming the City is an important study for American history and political development, with powerful insights into the relationships between scholarship and reform and between the structures of city government and urban democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1933, the Pennsylvania Railroad had been in existence for nearly ninety years. During this time, it had grown from a small line, struggling to build west from the state capital in Harrisburg, to the dominant transportation company in the United States. In Volume 2 of The Pennsylvania Railroad, Albert J. Churella continues his history of this giant of American transportation. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the world's largest business corporation and the nation's most important railroad. By 1917, the Pennsylvania Railroad, like the nation itself, was confronting a very different world. The war that had consumed Europe since 1914 was about to engulf the United States. Amid unprecedented demand for transportation, the federal government undertook the management of the railroads, while new labor policies and new regulatory initiatives, coupled with a postwar recession, would challenge the company like never before. Only time would tell whether the years that followed would signal a new beginning for the Pennsylvania Railroad or the beginning of the end. The Pennsylvania Railroad: The Age of Limits, 1917–1933, represents an unparalleled look at the history, the personalities, and the technologies of this iconic American company in a period that marked the shift from building an empire to exploring the limits of their power.

Based on the Official Records, biographical works, ship and operations histories, newspapers and other sources, this book chronicles the lives of 158 ironclad captains, North and South, who were charged with outfitting and commanding these then-revolutionary vessels in combat. Each biography includes (where known) birth and death information, pre- and post-war career, and details about ships served upon or commanded.
