What we have here is not simply a guidebook to effective practice, but an experience in reflective practice. I hope that you find The Book Club Companion as powerful and provocative as I do. - Peter Smagorinsky Just because a book club meets during class time doesn't mean reading can't be fun. And just because reading is fun doesn't mean it can't help you meet curricular objectives. With The Book Club Companion you'll find out how the for-pleasure concept of book clubs can help students enjoy reading during the school day, and how you can use book clubs to immerse adolescents in literate, real-world behaviors as you connect them to the English curriculum. Drawing on current literacy research and more than a decade's experiences with student book clubs in secondary classrooms, Cindy O'Donnell-Allen demonstrates how clubs can help adolescents become more willing, engaged, and strategic readers. Her comprehensive guide distinguishes book clubs from similar instructional techniques like literature circles and offers ideas for implementing clubs, using flexible grouping to meet student and curricular demands, and creating themed sets to offer students choice and you planning options. The Book Club Companion provides numerous resources to get in-class clubs started, keep them running, encourage student response, track discussion, and assess progress. It includes book lists arranged by grade level, reproducible assignment sheets, scoring guides, and tools for record keeping and teacher research. Get into in-class book clubs. You'll motivate students to read, help them enjoy the experience, and give them an opportunity to become more reflective and accomplished readers as they share in the excitement of connecting the real world to the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing the viewpoints of Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox thinkers, of conservatives, liberals, radicals, and agnostics, Christianity today is anything but monolithic or univocal. In The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought, general editor Adrian Hastings has tried to capture a sense of the great diversity of opinion that swirls about under the heading of Christian thought. Indeed, the 260 contributors, who hail from twenty countries, represent as wide a range of perspectives as possible. Here is a comprehensive and authoritative (though not dogmatic) overview of the full spectrum of Christian thinking. Within its 600 alphabetically arranged entries, readers will find lengthy survey articles on the history of Christian thought, on national and regional traditions, and on various denominations, from Anglican to Unitarian. There is ample coverage of Eastern thought as well, examining the Christian tradition in China, Japan, India, and Africa. The contributors examine major theological topics such as resurrection, the Eucharist, and grace as well as controversial issues such as homosexuality and abortion. In addition, short entries illuminate symbols such as water and wine, and there are many profiles of leading theologians, of non-Christians who have deeply influenced Christian thinking, including Aristotle and Plato, and of literary figures such as Dante, Milton, and Tolstoy. Most articles end with a list of suggested readings and the book features a large number of cross-references.The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought is an indispensable guide to one of the central strands of Western culture. An essential volume for all Christians, it is a thoughtful gift for the holidays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This six-part study introduces participants to foundational spiritual practices. It is structured to cultivate Christian covenant community, encouraging participants to build relationships with one another as they deepen their relationship with God. The introduction encourages participants to view discipleship as a lifelong journey, not merely a static set of beliefs. Using the journey of Abraham as an example, it provides an opportunity for participants to outline significant “stops” along their life’s journey. The five practices include Scripture, prayer, generosity, evangelism (or witness), and service. In the Scripture session, participants read covenants from the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures as relational documents that deepen our understanding of the relationship God desires with us. The prayer session outlines types of prayer, discusses obstacles to prayer, and introduces classic prayer forms. The generosity session highlights an ancient understanding of grace, encouraging participants to understand giving as an expression of their trust in God. The evangelism session encourages participants to view their lives as compelling narrative and provides a structure for crafting their spiritual autobiography. The final session, service, considers our role within the church and the world, providing a process for discernment by evaluating skills and passions in light of the needs around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the customs of religious life to common domestic and social practices, The Essential Companion to Life in Bible Times is your quick and reliable guide to the cultural backgrounds that formed the backdrop of biblical writings. Unlike many similar works, this Bible companion is organized thematically, making it easier to scan over broad subjects at one go. Topics include: The family—describes what the Bible says about children and childbirth, education, the different roles performed by men and women; as well as topics like sex, marriage, divorce, old age, death, and burial. The household—from house architecture and furniture to topics of everyday survival, such as food and its preparation, water access, and how illnesses were handled. Work life—discusses major Old Testament occupations and trades, from livestock and woodworking to commerce. Social life—includes explanations of population, the calendar, economics, crafts, travel and trade, dress, and music. Government—how different aspects of governance were handled in towns, larger cities, and the state, including the roles of the king, elders, and officials. Israel's religious life—from the use of high places and altars, to the importance of the tabernacle and the temple, to the role of priests and Levites. Between the brief introductions you might find in a study Bible and the overwhelming amount of detail in an exhaustive reference handbook, Essential Companion to Life in Bible Times strikes the perfect balance of manageable information, giving any student of Scripture the keys to unlock commonly misunderstood passages as well as deepen your appreciation of even the most familiar Bible stories.

Book excerpt: The Quran "The Reading" is the message of the Creator to Mankind, and it confirms what passed before it and points to what is to come to Mankind, and confirms the guidance sent to Father Adam, Noah, Hud, Saleh, Father Abraham, Lot, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob (aka Israel), Joseph, Shuaib, Moses, Aaron, King David, King Solomon, Imran, Zachariah, Mary, John (aka Yahya), Messiah Jesus and all other Messengers and Prophets of God. It adds nothing to Faith and Law that came in the unadulterated Torah and Bible (aka Injeel). It was sent to a man called Mohammad who was illiterate, could not read or write a book, and was astray till God chose him and sent His Spirit Gabriel to turn him to the path. The revelation came down on Mohammad from the time he was chosen by God, and his subsequent expulsion from Mecca and fighting, and return to Mecca and the House, the Sanctified, in the Mosque (Church or Synagogue), the Sanctified (Kaaba and its surroundings) and the return of all that God wished to the control of His Messenger and the believers with him. After all this, God sent down His Spirit and Angels to finalize the Quran, ensure it was written, and delivered it to Mohammad and his followers in ten nights of ONE month of Ramadan at the time of the Contention (Hajj), the Great, to the House, the Old, in Jerusalem (circa 628 AD), they are referred to as the nights of measure better than a thousand months, in which all commands were decided upon by the Will of God.The Book in Arabic, which has 114 Chapters or "Surahs", appeared on Earth in the 7th century A.D. and cannot be changed because God protects it, it is the statement/narration of the Holy Spirit Gabriel, highest of the Messengers of God. In it speak to us many Messengers, and also Mohammad, and there are sayings for us to follow and repeat. Wherever you see the word "Say!" it is an order to Mohammad to say something, for us to listen, obey, understand and follow, and repeat where needed. Similarly, many other Messengers speak to us whom we need to listen, obey, understand and follow, and repeat where needed, and of course Gabriel, and we need to do the same for what he tells us by Gods' command. God Himself speaks to us in it as well; you need to figure out where.Just because the Book is in Arabic gives NO supremacy to the Arabs, nor to any other race. It is for all Mankind and Demonkind and for any who want guidance from God. I have strived to translate it as best as God lets me, and I ask God for forgiveness where God has let me err. Read for yourselves and understand for your souls, no one can guide us except with the will of God, and every soul must choose to be guided before God guides her. The Quran can only be understood by those chosen by God Himself, and it will only be understood by those who are humble to the Unseen God. The English text cannot supersede the Arabic text, the text in Arabic are the living Words of God, and I mean "Alive". The Quran is a witness from God, just as the Torah is a witness from God from before, and soon Messiah Jesus will be a witness over us again, just like we are witnesses over each other and the Angel Messengers are witnesses over us, and God over everything Witnesses. The time approaches for Mankind's Judgment, but they wander around oblivious. Those who hold the Quran today and from their mouths they utter "We follow it" have destroyed the fabric of its meaning and commandments, and soon God will repay them "fully" for what they have perpetrated.
