I would lie in my room and visualize how things would be if, I were to be in someone else shoes, as well as what I felt other people’s approach should be in different circumstances. So I think about that, and this is how I would come up with my characters and stories. My stories are religious based The Bible is my mirror, of what God likes or dislikes. These are my past experiences I am sharing to help those that are going through their obstacles.
Download or read book Gaijin Yokozuna written by Mark Panek and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-05-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of eighteen, Chad Rowan left his home in rural Hawai'i for Tokyo with visions of becoming a star athlete in Japan's national sport, sumo. But upon his arrival he was shocked less by the city crowds and the winter cold than by having to scrub toilets and answer to fifteen-year-olds who had preceded him at the sumo beya. Rowan spoke no Japanese. Of Japanese culture, he knew only what little his father, a former tour bus driver in Hawai'i, had been able to tell him as they drove to the airport. And he had never before set foot in a sumo ring. Five years later, against the backdrop of rising U.S.–Japan economic tension, Rowan became the first gaijin (non-Japanese) to advance to sumo's top rank, yokozuna. His historic promotion was more a cultural accomplishment than an athletic one, since yokozuna are expected to embody highly prized Japanese values such as hard work, patience, strength, and hinkaku, a special kind of dignity thought to be available only to Japanese. He was promoted ahead of his two main rivals, the brothers Koji and Masaru Hanada, who had been raised in the sumo beya run by their father, the former sumo great Takanohana I. Perhaps the defining moment of the gaijin's unique success occurred at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, when Rowan, chosen to personify "Japanese" to one of the largest television audiences in history, performed a sacred sumo ritual at the opening ceremony. Gaijin Yokozuna chronicles the events leading to that improbable scene at Nagano and beyond, tracing Rowan's life from his Hawai'i upbringing to his 2001 retirement ceremony. Along the way it briefly examines the careers of two Hawai'i-born sumotori who paved the way for Rowan, Jesse Kuhaulua (Takamiyama) and Salevaa Atisanoe (Konishiki). The author shares stories from family members, coaches, friends, fellow sumo competitors, and of course Rowan himself, whom he accompanied on three Japan-wide exhibition tours. The work is further informed by volumes of secondary source material on sumo, Japanese culture, and local Hawai'i culture.

Book excerpt: You will never again pass a mirror without a slight chill once you have read Mirror, Mirror… Elizabeth Mary Downing is a typical American teenager...almost. When she peers into a mirror, she sees someone else staring back—an image identical to herself in every detail save one: the mirror image has blue eyes. Elizabeth’s eyes are brown! She is told by her mirror counterpart, “Liz,” that she can enter any mirror she wants through “trans-starence” and when curiosity prevails over fear and she enters the mirror, trading places with Liz, the horror begins as Liz wreaks havoc with what was a normal life. Elizabeth’s attempts to trick Liz into going back into the mirror reflect both suspense and humor and just when all hope seems lost, she succeeds...only to discover she has to return to the mirror to reverse events and get her life back to where it was. She succeeds...only she leaves part of herself forever in the mirror. Praise for MIRROR, MIRROR: “Edgerton is one of the best writers around for inventing dire dilemmas for his protagonists, and here he’s at his best because he’s created a paranormal environment where he’s not bound by laws of physics, time, or space. Turn Les loose like that and you’re in for a scary ride.” —Carl R. Brush, author of The Second Vendetta “Fantastic! Fast-paced and written in Edgerton’s distinctive, take-no-prisoners-style. I’m not your usual YA fan, but this was right up my alley.” —Maegan Beaumont, author of the Sabrina Vaughn novels “This is Les Edgerton’s only YA book, and it’s a great one. It reminds me a little of some old-school Twilight Zone tales, in that Edgerton starts with an original premise and then executes it with precision and thoughtfulness. He keeps the tension bouncing along nicely, too.” —Rob Boley, author of the Scary Tales books

Tyler Beck is an intellectually gifted eighteen-year-old loner who has an invisible, magical cord above his right shoulder; he is also a former drug addict who was rehabilitated with the help of a counselor named Robie. After Robie dies, however, a distraught Beck exits his friends funeral and seeks refuge at the beachand in heroin. Their lives collide when Caterinas car strikes a trashcan that crashes into the semi-conscious Beck. When they both ask aloud for help, the grieving parts of themselves are transported to another dimension called 10-17. Caterina arrives in this dimension as her seventeen-year-old self, Cat, and there she meets Beck, whom she nicknames Ty. Once in this new world, set against a backdrop of Italy, they meet a Watcher named Miranda who tells them that they are in 10-17 for healing, even while their parallel lives are continuing on Earth. Miranda explains that the dimensions are spaced like slats on a window blind; she also tells the teenagers about a place called Thare, an Earth-like dimension populated by humans, but without suffering or addiction. While Beck readily embraces his love for the mature Caterina, she is conflicted over her feelings for a man half her age. Meanwhile, in Dimension 10-17, as Cat and Ty complete their lesson, they are torn over the choice that Miranda offers them: To go to the perfect world of Thare and leave the Earth and their families behind, or to return wholly to their Earthly selves...
