The report presents epidemiological and programmatic data for 2022, which were gathered, compiled and analysed in 2023. In some cases, 2023 data are available and presented; in other cases, less recent information is included, when 2022 data are not available. In addition, it presents the main facts or events that occurred in 2023. In line with the road map’s companion document Ending the neglect to attain the Sustainable Development Goals: a framework for monitoring and evaluating progress of the road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021−2030, the report includes quantitative information on the status of the overarching, cross-cutting and disease-specific indicators. This is followed by qualitative information on each of the three road map pillars and on regional and country progress. The conclusions of the report and way forward are further complemented by annexes on cross-cutting indicator 6, status of donated medicines for treatment of NTDs, articles on NTDs published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record, target product profiles published as of 31 December 2023 and the list of global NTD reports published by WHO so far.

Book excerpt: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect more than 1 billion people globally, causing serious, long-term health effects. Timely, effective interventions such as preventive chemotherapy, which involves the regular administration of safe, effective medicines to a defined population irrespective of its infection status, reduce morbidity and mortality. The new NTD road map advocates preventive chemotherapy as a core intervention to reduce the burden of NTDs. Effective administration of preventive chemotherapy relies largely on operational planning which addresses the need for programmes to reach all eligible people and maximize community demand for the intervention. Local, bottom-up planning (“microplanning”) fosters effective implementation and monitoring of public health programmes. Originally, public health implementers developed microplanning for use in vaccination campaigns, but various programmes, including those for control and elimination of NTDs, now use it. This manual is based on these and other country experiences in microplanning of preventive chemotherapy for NTDs. It describes the basic concepts of microplanning and provides steps and examples of tools to develop and implement a microplan. Since microplanning originates at the lowest level of implementation, and is a bottom-up process, the main target audience of this manual is individuals who are responsible for oversight of preventive chemotherapy against NTDs.

Developing a prioritized drug portfolio of the most needed formulations for children is essential to streamline researchers’ and supplier’s efforts and resources around specific dosage forms and formulations that address most urgent needs for children. In general, due to limited financial incentives, few new drugs are being developed for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Several NTDs disproportionately affect children compared to adults and, as is the case like for most diseases affecting adults and children, the burden to children is compounded by lack of inclusion of paediatric populations in clinical trials and/or lack of age-appropriate dosing regimens and formulations. The PADO-NTD exercise concluded with a final meeting organized in September 2023 with representatives from the four prioritized disease areas to reach consensus on a final PADO-NTD priority list, watch list and research questions and discuss transversal issues for the way forward. The meeting report will include summaries of the background, discussions and deliberations of all PADO exercises, and final conclusions and outputs of the overall PADO for NTD exercises.

Since 1989 (when most endemic countries began reporting monthly from each endemic village), the number of new dracunculiasis cases has fallen from 892 055 in 12 endemic countries to 3190 in 4 countries in 2009, a decrease of more than 99%. Hotez relocated to Houston to launch Baylor’s National School of Tropical Medicine. What ingredients are needed to create harmony between the physical, social, environmental and cultural aspects of a city and the human beings that inhabit it? This report adopts the concept of Harmonious Cities as a theoretical framework in order to understand today's urban world, and also as an operational tool to confront the most important challenges facing urban areas and their development processes. It recognizes that tolerance, diversity, social justice and good governance, all of which are inter-related, are as important to sustainable urban development as physical planning. It addresses national concerns by searching for solutions at the city level. For that purpose, it focuses on three key areas: spatial or regional harmony, which examines the main drivers of urban growth in the developing world and explores the spatial nuances of economic and social policies; social harmony, which presents and analyzes new data on urban inequalities worldwide and describes the types of shelter deprivations experienced by slum dwellers in developing world regions; and environmental harmony, which examines the role of cities in the climate change debate, and the impact of global warming on the most vulnerable cities. The report also assesses the various intangible assets within cities that contribute to harmony, such as cultural heritage, sense of place and memory and the complex set of social and symbolic relationships that give cities meaning. It argues that these intangible assets represent the soul of the city and are as important for harmonious urban development as tangible assets. Book excerpt: The conservation of crop genetic resources is one of the important elements in efforts to sustainably increase agricultural production in low-income countries, and to guarantee long-term food security, especially for the low-income population groups in these countries. Horticultural crops, as high-value crops, have an important role to play in revitalizing rural economies and can add significantly to national economies. Moreover, horticulture provides more than twice the number of jobs compared to traditional cereal crop production, and the shifting of conventional agriculture towards high-value horticulture has increased employment opportunities in developing countries. To exploit this potential, researchers need a vast array of horticultural genetic resources and information on new traits. Horticultural crops, which are only a part of PGRFA (Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture), are characterized by a wide and varied range of species. In fact, there are five major horticultural crop groups: fruit and nut crops, vegetables, food legumes, roots and tubers, and lastly the ornamental and medicinal group. In this context, the present book provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of conservation and utilization of horticultural genetic resources, addressing contemporary approaches to conservation in connection with different technologies, including biotechnological approaches as practised in India and in some cases, globally. It includes a brief chapter on the unique nature of horticultural genetic resources, providing a rationale for viewing them as being distinct from field crop genetic resources. Subsequent chapters share insights on protocols for the conservation of selected horticultural crops ex situ, and focus on the increased need to complement these efforts with in situ conservation approaches. Geospatial tools are also briefly described, emphasizing their utility with regard to mapping and managing resources. The book also explores the wild gene pool in horticulture crops; discusses legal aspects related to horticultural genetic resources and biotechnological aspects; and describes the key aspects of sustainable management and replenishment. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for all horticulturists, graduate students, researchers, policymakers, conservationists, and NGOs engaged in horticulture in particular and biodiversity in general.
