Book excerpt: Lord, I asked you to keep me near the cross. This woman's leg is rubbing so close to my manhood, causing me a rather uncomfortable satisfaction. As she moved close, I could smell the scent of cherry blossom and Jasmine. This scent was also familiar, like the bath set that Katrina wears in the purple bottle at Victoria secret. Lord, I haven't had a woman pay this much attention to me in a long time, and you know women like Jessica are my weakness. Her blue eyes have me in a trance. I know this is wrong. I want to escape, but my body wouldn't work. I need you, Lord, like never before. Lord, please help me. I'm thinking with the wrong head. I need Help, Lord. Now. But it was too late. She ushered me through the hotel lobby and onto the elevator. I watched as she opened the keys to the hotel room.I closed my eyes; when I opened them again, I was laying in-between the legs of my weakness. I was making love to this woman, wondering how I managed to fall for one of Satan's oldest tricks. Who in the Hell left the gate open?

Book excerpt: If you like reading about family, fights, sex, mystery, surprise, gossip, jealousy, excitement, suspense, pain, joy, sadness, death, life, love, hate, wealth, and poverty, you will love The Maid of Honor. This book is about the relationship between two sisters, Willie Mae and her younger sister Angie. Both girls have grown up in the lap of luxury, but that is all they have in common. Angie is spoiled rotten and takes full advantage of her status in life. She loves to spend money, and her attitude toward those that have less than she is, is blatant. She feels that she is better than almost everyone (including her sister). She is in a relationship with Darryl Jenkins, the son of a famous wealthy Holy Ghost–filled minister from the ATL. Willie Mae grew up in the same household, but these two girls are as different as day and night. Willie Mae works in a bank, and she loves her life of living a quiet life at home with her parents and leading the church youth. Not having a man in her life bothers her, but she realizes that the old saying "there is someone for everyone" is not necessarily true, and she is happy with the life she has made for herself. Being a daddy's girl is enough for her—well, it was until Angie came home after an evening with Darryl excited that she was now engaged. This announcement alone sent Willie Mae's life into a panic and everyone around her into a state of confusion. Describing this book, many words come to mind, superbly crafted, generous hearted, evil temptation, a delicious love story, engaging and memorable. When you read this book, you will experience many emotions. I promise you, you will laugh, cry, yell, curse, and you will relate differently to each character. The Maid of Honor is a book that will make you happy that you took the time to get to know the story of Willie Mae and Angie Johnson.

Tisha spends every day at work teaching children to “aim for the moon and even if you miss you will land among the stars,” but when she goes home, she allows her children to bear witness to the world’s greatest tragedy, a woman who doesn’t know her own worth. She should be reading “How to Find a Good Man for Dummies!” She refuses to admit that the way she is being treated by her man is completely unacceptable. Taylor should be the fifth member of the Sex and the City cast. She is highly successful in her professional life, but she is a complete loser when it comes to keeping a man. Honestly, she can’t figure out if her professional growth is scaring the good men away, or if she has some bad habits that men refuse to live with. Relationship Status: It’s Complicated! It starts with a simple premise: Two young boys, Riley and Huey, move from inner-city Chicago to live with their grandfather in the suburbs. The tension increases, however, because the two boys are African-Americans now compelled to adapt to a white suburban world. They must take all they've learned in the "hood" and apply it to life in the 'burbs. Superbly illustrated, The Boondocks has stirred controversy, attracted widespread media coverage, and won readers who've applauded McGruder's unapologetic and humorous approach to race. In this second collection of Boondocks cartoons, readers can get another look at this innovative strip.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering everything from sports to art, religion, music, and entrepreneurship, this book documents the vast array of African American cultural expressions and discusses their impact on the culture of the United States. According to the latest census data, less than 13 percent of the U.S. population identifies as African American; African Americans are still very much a minority group. Yet African American cultural expression and strong influences from African American culture are common across mainstream American culture—in music, the arts, and entertainment; in education and religion; in sports; and in politics and business. African American Culture: An Encyclopedia of People, Traditions, and Customs covers virtually every aspect of African American cultural expression, addressing subject matter that ranges from how African culture was preserved during slavery hundreds of years ago to the richness and complexity of African American culture in the post-Obama era. The most comprehensive reference work on African American culture to date, the multivolume set covers such topics as black contributions to literature and the arts, music and entertainment, religion, and professional sports. It also provides coverage of less-commonly addressed subjects, such as African American fashion practices and beauty culture, the development of jazz music across different eras, and African American business.

Book excerpt: Here’s the first big book of The Boondocks, more than four years and 800 strips of one of the most influential, controversial, and scathingly funny comics ever to run in a daily newspaper. “With bodacious wit, in just a few panels, each day Aaron serves up—and sends up—life in America through the eyes of two African-American kids who are full of attitude, intelligence, and rebellion. Each time I read the strip, I laugh—and I wonder how long The Boondocks can get away with the things it says. And how on earth can the most truthful thing in the newspaper be the comics?” —From the foreword by Michael Moore
