Book excerpt: Elspeth Huxley captivated readers throughout the world with her 'memories of an African childhood' in THE FLAME TREES OF THIKA and THE MOTTLED LIZARD. In this final volume of her trilogy she tells the story of her adult life in Africa, in which the vigorously evoked personalities - from the pioneer Lord Delamere and Baroness Blixen to Jomo Kenyatta - blend with her supurb description of the social, cultural and political upheavals of the time. 'An accomplished story-teller, she weaves anecdotes, character sketches, political history together without losing her thread or the readers momentum. ' SUNDAY TIMES 'She evokes it all lovingly but astringently, especially the glittering, often scandelous life of the young aristocrats who lived in Happy Valley. ' DAILY EXPRESS
Book Synopsis Out in the Midday Sun by : Margaret Shennan
Download or read book Out in the Midday Sun written by Margaret Shennan and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of British Malaya and Singapore, from the days of Victorian pioneers to the denouement of independence, is a momentous episode in Britain’s colonial past. Through memoirs, letters and interviews, Margaret Shennan chronicles its halcyon years, the two World Wars, economic depression and diaspora, revealing the attitudes of the diverse quixotic characters of this now quite vanished world. The British came as fortune-seekers to exploit Asian trade shipped through Penang and Singapore. They found a mature Asian culture in a land of palm-fringed shores and primeval jungle. Like modern Romans, they built townships, defences, communications and hill stations, they spurred a rivalry between the fledgling commercial centres of Singapore, Penang and Kuala Lumpur, and they superimposed their law and established an idiosyncratic political system. They also developed the tin and rubber of the Malay States, encouraging Chinese and Indian immigrants by their open-door policy. The outcome was a vibrant multi-racial society – the most cosmopolitan in the East.

Book Synopsis The Sun at Midday: Tales of a Mediterranean Family by : Gini Alhadeff
Download or read book The Sun at Midday: Tales of a Mediterranean Family written by Gini Alhadeff and published by Odyssey Editions. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This astonishing memoir is the story of a family who always felt slightly foreign in every country and developed a chameleon-like ability to adapt to their surroundings. Gini Alhadeff was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and grew up in Cairo, Khartoum, Florence, and Tokyo. With a vivid gift for narrative, Alhadeff evokes the languid Alexandria of the early decades of this century (where her mother’s family made its fortune in cotton) and some of its beguiling honorary citizens: a violet-eyed aunt who refused to have new slipcovers made for her sofa so President Nasser would find the old ones when her house was impounded; a cousin who was taught the limits of reason by Wittgenstein at Cambridge and became a monsignor; a gynecologist uncle interned at Auschwitz and then Buchenwald, who lived to tell his tale with stark unsentimentality. With a keen sense for both the comic and the tragic, Alhadeff sizes up what is left of the family fortune: a tendency to live beyond one’s means, the stories and legends that survive the rise and fall of families, and the present as a paradise for those who, having lost all, have nothing to lose.

Book excerpt: In Karl Schroeder's sci-fi thriller, Hayden Griffin has come to the city of Rush with one thing in mind: to take murderous revenge for his parents' deaths. It is the distant future. The world known as Virga is a fullerene balloon three thousand kilometers in diameter, filled with air, water, and aimlessly floating chunks of rock. The humans who live in this vast environment must build their own fusion suns and "towns" that are in the shape of enormous wood and rope wheels that are spun for gravity. Young, fit, bitter, and friendless, Hayden Griffin is a very dangerous man. He's come to the city of Rush in the nation of Slipstream with one thing in mind: to take murderous revenge for the deaths of his parents six years ago. His target is Admiral Chaison Fanning, head of the fleet of Slipstream, which conquered Hayden's nation of Aerie years ago. And the fact that Hayden's spent his adolescence living with pirates doesn't bode well for Fanning's chances . . . Book Synopsis Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers by : Philip Schaff
Download or read book Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume VI of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will find Saint Augustines exegesis on the Gospels and the Sermon on the Mount, which strove to interpret and draw meaning out of the text without incorporating the author's personal agenda or bias. Also included in this volume are a selection of Augustines sermons."

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Hemorrhage types A Class I Hemorrhage Class II hemorrhages Class III hemorrhages Type IV hemorrhage Postpartum hemorrhage Nosebleed Sprains Symptoms of a Hemorrhage Basic Care/Prevention Small wounds How to Make a Tourniquet Your Diet Soups Ginger Red Sandalwood Powder and Licorice Tri-phala (Literally -Three Fruit) Conclusion Some Interesting Stories of Metals and Gems Powdered Red Alum Cinnamon Bananas Camphor Author Bio Publisher Introduction The reason why I decided to write this particular book is because summer has not started yet, but the nosebleeds have already started in our neighborhood, because the temperature has reached the high 40s. The word hemorrhage brings with it the idea of internal bleeding, and emergency medica l situations, when you need to get a doctor fast, but actually it is the medical terminology for bleeding of any kind, both internal or external. This book is going to tell you all about different types of hemorrhages, but I am not going to give you any very complex medical remedies, except those which are in general usage for minor hemorrhages. That is because I am not a medical practitioner. Nevertheless, you can find a number of interesting bits of information in the appendix section, about how hemorrhages were cured 5000 years ago, in the Indian subcontinent, through Ayurveda. The plants and vegetables used here, along with the meat of animals and birds as well as the method of preparation is definitely interesting to read, but I really do not have the time, energy, inclination, knowledge or experience to make up any of these medicines through ancient medical procedures. The medical treatises were collected in one great compendium, and they had been taken from the knowledge gained by a large number of wandering mendicants. With my limited knowledge of Sanskrit, I could make out some medical terms, but I was astonished to know that at that time the food habits of the people living in Greece (Yavanas)– they ate meat and fish, predominantly, and Persia (Pallavas as in Reza Shah Pehlavi, the Shah of Iran – they enjoyed game, vegetables, sour foods etc., they were noted very carefully in these treatises. There were three other countries and lands noted here, but I could not make any mental association of which land they referred to.

Book Synopsis Delhi: Adventures In A Megacity (PB) by : Sam Miller
Download or read book Delhi: Adventures In A Megacity (PB) written by Sam Miller and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘A book that is . . . as eccentric and anarchic as its subject’—William Dalrymple In this extraordinary portrait of one of the world’s largest cities, Sam Miller sets out to discover the real Delhi, a city he describes as being ‘India’s dreamtown— and its purgatory’. He treads the city’s streets, including its less celebrated destinations—Nehru Place, Pitampura and Gurgaon—places most writers ignore. His encounters with Delhi’s people, from ragpickers to members of the Police Brass Band, create a richly entertaining portrait of what the city is and what it is becoming. Miller is, like so many of the people he meets, a migrant in one of the world’s fastest growing megapolises and the Delhi he depicts is one whose future concerns us all. Miller possesses an intense curiosity; he has an infallible eye for life’s diversities, for all the marvellous and sublime moments that illuminate people’s lives. This is a generous, original, humorous portrait of a great city; one which unerringly locates the humanity beneath the mundane, the unsung and the unfamiliar.
