Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Royal Palace of Whitehall The old Palace of Whitehall has great claims to public interest, both by reason of its antiquity and of its historical associations, to say nothing of its intimate connection with the lives of the Tudor and Stuart Sovereigns, and the dramatic events of which it was the scene. The Palace has almost entirely passed away, and only the Banqueting House remains to remind us of its former glory. Its story may therefore be said to have come to an end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whitehall, or the Days of Charles I, Vol. 2 The supper was served, and with a splendid ele gance of which Ingulph had seen few examples, even in the Court. It was an Italian fashion, which had as yet made few converts among the northern nations, that of nocturnal repast but which after wards reached its height of glory under Louis Quatorze. The conversation was animated, though partaking somewhat too deeply of the license of the times; and Ingulph, kindled by the smiles of a beautiful woman, and the wit of the choice Spirits about him, blazed up with a splendour of imagination which surprised and delighted even them. He was treated with the most marked attention; but it was not until the cloth was removed, and the lackeys gone, that he began to perceive a drift in this distinction. It had been little more than a matter for jesting when four boy clerks were sent to join a room which had previously been thought overcrowded by two Second Division clerks and their five temporaryassistants. It caused no inconvenience at all when all the occupants Of this room, now swelled to a total number of twenty-three, were driven into the corridor to make room for four hopeless failures Of superior rank whom the Derogation Of Crown Appanages Office had cheerfully lent to assist the Circumvention Branch in its labours. It is true that some remark was occasioned When a Higher Division clerk (albeit a Very little one, like the souls Of the penguins) was also turned out Of his room. But they put him at a corner, a distinguished though draughty position, arranged a screen round him and gave him a shorthand typist who could not spell and Of whom he was desperately afraid Thus the claims Of caste were satisfied. The crisis came at last quite suddenly. His Majesty's Secretary of State for Circumlocutory Affairs felt himself growing a little stale and departed from his rule Of ceasing work only to sleep and waking only to resume his labours. The first battle Of Ypres had been brought to a successful conclusion, and he felt that he Owed himself a little relaxation. Besides, he had been outwitted the day before by a contractor, and the day before that by a colleague. He attributed these misfortunes to the result Of overwork. SO when he was walking from his Office to the House and met On the way a polished female friend who invited him to dinner for that night, he felt that for once at least in this way he could best serve the State. The con sequences Oi his overwork must indeed have been serious for him to have missed a certain gleam Of pur pose in the lady's eye. Sentinels paraded the lofty walls, which, in the seventeenth century, made Oxford a place of strength. Cannon pointed with their black mouths at every point of vantage; a standard floated on the summit of the castle, which dominated the town; and banderols, streaming at various distances, marked the position of numerous out posts. Emile Bourgeois, whose "Le Grand Siecle," is a fascinating proof of his statement, "the age we live in delights in inquiry into the private lives of the great and into the spirit of society of the past. It loves to interrogate them directly, so that it may get at the secrets of their passions and find out their state of mind at different periods. This curiosity is not culpable. 'It almost ceases to be curiosity, ' said Voltaire, 'when it has epochs and men who attract the gaze of posterity for its object.'" Such an epoch in English history is par excellence the Restoration. It is a subject on which an immense number of books has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Dene of Toronto: A Comedy of Whitehall "Straight along, down the steps, bear to the left and you'll find the Admiralty on the opposite side of the way." John Dene thanked the policeman, gave the cigar in his mouth a twist with his tongue, and walked along Lower Regent Street towards Waterloo Place. At the bottom of the Duke of York's steps, he crossed the road, turned to the left and paused. Nowhere could he see an entrance sufficiently impressive to suggest the Admiralty. Just ahead was a dingy and unpretentious doorway with a policeman standing outside; but that he decided could not be the entrance to the Admiralty. As he gazed at it, a fair-haired girl came out of the doorway and walked towards him. "Excuse me," said John Dene, lifting his hat, "but is that the Admiralty you've just come out of?" There was an almost imperceptible stiffening in the girl's demeanour; but a glance at the homely figure of John Dene, with its ill-made clothes, reassured her. Westminster claimed that the Terrace was within the boundaries of St. Margaret. The Terrace claimed that it was extra - parochial, as being on part of the site of the palace of Whitehall. The counsel for Westminster was able to show that Whitehall had been private property before the reign of Henry VIII., and that neither he nor any one else had made it extra-parochial. The verdict, therefore, was in favour of the parishioners of St. Margaret. We may return to this interesting and instructive report, with its wealth of ancient evidence, and interrogate that much more ancient document, the face of the country. Strange to say, a great deal of that country remains as it was in, say, the reign of Henry III. The green fields and the water - courses are there, though the Abbot in 1250 could no longer look across his own land all the way from Westminster. The divided Tyburn wandered over the green expanse, untroubled with bridges. Two or three small brooks formed here a kind of delta. On the south, one of them ran through Westminster Abbey and divided Thorney Island from Tot Hill. Another ran through the district we call Whitehall. The land between was low and marshy, and even at the present day, when there has been so much levelling up, the statue of Charles I. Is upon ground ten feet higher than Parliament Street. If, standing on the future site of Whitehall we looked to the westward, we saw nothing but a vast tract of low green meadow-land. If we looked to the south, we might have seen the new buildings of Westminster Abbey, unless when the Danes had been on the warpath. If we looked to the eastward, we found that the Thames washed up close to our feet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal United Service Institution, Whitehall Yard, 1865, Vol. 8 The improved method of sizing a company, as at present in force, by making the rear rank the same height as the front, and the faulty system still adhered to in some countries, of placing the most efficient men in the f rout rank, having been done away with, obviates the necessity of trying as much as possible to keep a certain rank in front, a rule which must necessarily hamper a commanding officer, and deprive him of that liberty of action which is absolutely necessary to enable him to show a front under all circumstances. There certainly is a sanction given in the drill-book for inverting the order of companies, but still why, instead of being sanctioned.
