Book Synopsis Sam O. White, Alaskan by : Jim Rearden
Download or read book Sam O. White, Alaskan written by Jim Rearden and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This was an excellent book about a true pioneer! A very interesting story about the life of an amazing man. Sam was generous, courageous, and a friend to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him." Sam O. White was a tough, deep-voiced, six-foot-tall, two-hundred-pound former Maine lumberjack and guide. From 1922, for half a century he crisscrossed wild Alaska by foot, with packhorses, dog teams, canoe, riverboat, and airplane. He helped map the Territory, trap fur, and became the world’s first flying game warden. White wrote exciting tales about his Alaska adventures, and those writings make up the bulk of this volume. In 1927, he arrived at Fort Yukon as a game warden when millions of dollars worth of fine arctic furs annually arrived there. The hardy frontier trappers considered the new game warden a joke, but he quickly taught them to respect conservation laws. He was frustrated by the impossibility of adequately patrolling thousands of square miles by dog team, boat, and on foot, so with his own money, he bought an airplane. Pioneer pilots Noel and Ralph Wien taught him how to fly it. White then startled remote trappers and others by suddenly arriving from the sky. In 1941, lack of backing from Juneau headquarters caused him to resign as a wildlife agent. At Fairbanks, Noel Wien made him Chief Pilot for Wien Airlines. For the next two decades White flew as an Alaskan bush pilot, admired for his flying skill and the superior service he provided residents who flew with him, and who depended upon him for receiving mail and supplies. He had countless friends—one hundred arrived for his seventieth birthday party. His integrity and principles were of the highest. Decades after his death, he is still spoken of with awe by the long-time Alaskans.

Book Synopsis Wild Tales from the Wild by : Saad Bin Jung
Download or read book Wild Tales from the Wild written by Saad Bin Jung and published by Roli Books Private Limited. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the weary urban dweller, the verdant Mangala valley near the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka,; would seem like a haven of peace and tranquility. Appearances could not be more deceptive, as Saad Bin Jung discovered after forsaking his life in the city for a stone cottage in the valley. If the surrounding jungles were teeming with wildlife of every variety, the life that the human of the area led was no less wild. Here, he recounts the adventures that he had with some of them: the leopard who moved into 'bison cottage', the dining hall cobra, the magnificent Mangala tiger, Torn Ears, the most-photographed gaur of his time, and the elephants whom he loved with a passion, Colonel Hathi, Jayaprakash and even the Rightchipped Tusker with his bullying ways, amongst them. Not to be outdone were the members of the Kuruba tribe and other humans - Mr B, the family expert, the elderly manager with a raging libido, the gorgeous foreign girls who almost saw him booted out of the family - who came to share his life at Bush Betta, the wildlife resort that he set up in 1991. Hair-raising and hilarious, these are stories that anyone who has had a taste of the wild, or wished that they could, will enjoy, as much for their drama and comedy as for the many fascinating insights into animal behaviour that they provide. No less compelling is the message between the lines, the grandeur and beauty of India's forests, and the need to preserve them at all costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The all new essays in this book discuss black cultural retellings of traditional, European fairy tales. The representation of black protagonists in such tales helps to shape children's ideas about themselves and the world beyond--which can ignite a will to read books representing diverse characters. The need for a multicultural text set which includes the multiplicity of cultures within the black diaspora is discussed. The tales referenced in the text are rich in perspective: they are Aesop's fables, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Ananse. Readers will see that stories from black perspectives adhere to the dictates of traditional literary conventions while still steeped in literary traditions traceable to Africa or the diaspora.
