His vision - to make his Fine Arts Museum in Budapest the most renowned in Europe - became an obsession which broke him, leading to the scandal that hounded him into exile. "Pulszky's is the story of glittering cosmopolitan society; of passion, pride and madness; of a man entangled in the political intrigues of his time. In telling it, Thomas Shapcott has woven fact and fiction, with subtle artistry, into the richly ambiguous texture of truth." - summary from back cover.

Book Synopsis In Other Words by : Barbara Williams
Download or read book In Other Words written by Barbara Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen of Australia's foremost poets are featured in this volume. They talk candidly about their lives and work: of the craft, the rigour, the pangs and pleasures of their calling; of winged moments caught, however fleetingly, on the page. These writers also speak of transformation and transcendence, the creative process, their individual modes and methods of writing and the act of writing itself. The interviews provide valuable insights on such topics as: gender and writing; landscape; the function of poetry and the poet's social role; influences embraced and withstood - literary, personal, local, regional, national, international. The writers and their poetry are discussed from both within and beyond Australian borders. This collection offers a broad range of Australian poets, most of whom are now in the middle to later years of their career. These poets have contributed significantly to the life and quality of poetry in Australia over recent decades, and continue to play pivotal roles in Australia's cultural domain today, as the country moves towards the threshold of a new century.

Download or read book Arrival Cities written by Burcu Dogramaci and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile and migration played a critical role in the diffusion and development of modernism around the globe, yet have long remained largely understudied phenomena within art historiography. Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this volume brings together contributions by international researchers committed to revising the historiography of modern art. It pays particular attention to metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century. These arrival cities developed into hubs of artistic activities and transcultural contact zones where ideas circulated, collaborations emerged, and concepts developed. Taking six major cities as a starting point – Bombay (now Mumbai), Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai –the authors explore how urban topographies and landscapes were modified by exiled artists re-establishing their practices in metropolises across the world. Questioning the established canon of Western modernism, Arrival Cities investigates how the migration of artists to different urban spaces impacted their work and the historiography of art. In doing so, it aims to encourage the discussion between international scholars from different research fields, such as exile studies, art history, social history, architectural history, architecture, and urban studies.
