Download or read book The Ruff written by Johan G. Van Rhijn and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ruff is a fascinating species whose elaborate breeding behaviour has captivated ornithologists for decades. Their communal display grounds, or leks, provide an extreme example of a social system widespread in birds and other animals, in which brilliantly plumaged males seemingly compete for the attention of passing females. In this book, Johan van Rhijn explores this complex and intricate drama, both to lay bare the details of the players' private lives, and to provide a means of exploring the wider variety of wader breeding systems. Strands of evidence for all aspects of the Ruffs life, in and out of the breeding season, come together to give a thought-provoking insight into this important area of biology. Specialists and birdwatchers alike will have much to learn from this intriguing story and the insights it provides. Illustrated by Ian Willis.

Download or read book Lovecraft Country written by Matt Ruff and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now an HBO® Series from J.J. Abrams (Executive Producer of Westworld), Misha Green (Creator of Underground) and Jordan Peele (Director of Get Out) The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy. Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours. At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction. A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of two black families, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

Book Synopsis Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum: Striges, or nocturnal birds of prey, by R.B. Sharpe by : British Museum (Natural History). Department of Zoology
Download or read book Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum: Striges, or nocturnal birds of prey, by R.B. Sharpe written by British Museum (Natural History). Department of Zoology and published by . This book was released on 1875 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enormous undertaking, which, according to one of the prefaces, professes to be a complete list of every bird known at the time of publication, kept growing even as it was being written. The Museum added eagerly to their already vast collections during the decades of publication, acquiring by gift the great collections of A.O. Hume on Asian birds, and those of Sclater and Salvin and Godwin on Neotropical birds, so that the size of the collection nearly tripled between 1874 and 1888. Sharpe originally intended to do all the work himself, but others were called in when this became clearly impossible. The plates are all of birds not previously illustrated. In the decades following its publication this catalogue was universally acclaimed as the most important work on systematic ornithology that has ever been published. (Zimmer, p. 96). And even after one hundred years it remains an essential reference for the serious ornithologist, as it underpins a great deal of modern bird classification. With 387 plates, most hand-coloured lithographs, some chromolithographs, by William Hart, J.G. Keulemans, Joseph and Peter Smit.
