Book excerpt: White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876-1916) - and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.

Book excerpt: White Fang opens with a beautifully detailed picture of the Yukon. Two men, Bill and Henry, with a team of six dogs pulling a sled on which is strapped a coffin, are fleeing down a frozen waterway, a wolf pack in pursuit. At night, the dogs are individually lured to their deaths by a she-wolf. London paints quite a portrait of the two men sitting around the campfire, seeing only the eyes of the wolves reflecting the light from the fire. Scared and frustrated, Bill decides one morning to go out with his rifle and three remaining cartridges. Henry hears three shots, but Bill does not return. Henry is left alone and night after night he feels the wolves coming closer and closer. Finally, one night, the wolves become so brazen that they come right up to the fire to collect their dinner. Henry literally climbs into the fire and begins hurling brands from the fire at the encircling wolves. At the last moment he is rescued as a search party looking for the dead body Henry and Bill were transporting. And that is the abrupt end of Part I. Henry drops out of the novel, and the scene shifts to the wolf pack and the birth of White Fang. It is difficult to understand why Jack London wrote the novel this way. The opening scene is masterfully written, but does not quite fit. Part II of the novel is a complete break from Part I, as the story is now told from the perspective of the she-wolf. The famine is now over and the wolf pack begins to separate, little by little. She-wolf begins to travel with three males who are all vying for her attention, but she has now interest in any of them. "One-Eye," an older, more experienced wolf eventually kills the other two males and the she-wolf's attitude towards him softens. They travel the forest together, but the she-wolf is restless, looking for something she does not quite understand. She finds this something, a cave where she can give birth to her cubs.

This gray cub is much stronger and more active than the other cubs, adhering to the theme of the "survival of the fittest." London's treatment of White Fang's puppyhood is accurately and amusingly written. White Fang, who is three-quarters wolf and one-quarter husky, enters the story in the first month of his life, and London describes his step-by-step development as he emerges from the lair and learns how to hunt. It is apparent that London had done his research.

Book excerpt: This annotated edition contains large print. The story happens in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and subtleties White Fang's excursion to training. It is a companion novel (and a topical mirror) to London's most popular work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a seized, tamed pooch grasping his wild lineage to endure and flourish in nature. A lot of White Fang is composed from the perspective of the main canine character, empowering London to investigate how creatures see their reality and how they see people. White Fang inspects the fierce universe of wild creatures and the similarly vicious universe of people. The book likewise investigates complex topics including profound quality and recovery.

Book excerpt: Jack London's classic novel White Fang is here faithfully adapted to the graphic novel format. White Fang, a wolf-dog, must fight to survive, and humans are not always his friends, but in this touching story of bravery and animal instinct, he overcomes his brutal nature to settle, domesticated, in a comfortable home. Ideal as visual introductions to classic texts, Graffex titles are fast-moving, cinematic retellings of wellknown stories. Equally rewarding as comics, graphic novels or learning resources, the series uses specially commissioned full-colour artwork to retell some of the most incredible, influential and memorable tales in the canon of English literature. Speech bubbles feature direct quotes from the original text, running captions describe events in a clear manner and detailed footnotes translate challenging vocabulary and provide interesting background information. It's a wealth of key information that, critically, doesn't overwhelm or distract from the original story. Featuring photographs, paintings and maps, Graffex endmatters tell the story of each book in its wider geographical context. Text details the life of the author, the socio-political events which influenced the book and the impact the book had on the society of the time. Each title also features a double-page opening illustration and a full index.

Book excerpt: “White Fang” is a 1906 novel by American writer Jack London that tells the tale of a wild wolfdog who resides in the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories of Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s. Presented from the four-legged protagonist's point of view, it is the charming story of White Fang's journey from the wilderness to domestication. John Griffith London (1876 – 1916), commonly known as Jack London, was an American journalist, social activist, and novelist. He was an early pioneer of commercial magazine fiction, becoming one of the first globally-famous celebrity writers who were able to earn a large amount of money from their writing. London is famous for his contributions to early science fiction and also notably belonged to "The Crowd", a literary group an Francisco known for its radical members and ideas. Other notable works by this author include: “Martin Eden” (1909), “The Kempton-Wace Letters” (1903), and “The Call of the Wild” (1903). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timeless tale of half-dog, half-wolf White Fang is one of the world's greatest adventure stories. Born in the wilds of the freezing cold Yukon, White Fang is the only animal in the litter to survive. Turned vicious by cruel abuse, soon he learns the harsh laws of nature, yet buried deep inside him are the distant memories of affection and love. Will this fiercely independent creature of the wild learn to trust man again? What makes White Fang a masterpiece of American literature is Jack London's special knowledge of the Yukon and of the behavior of humans facing nature at its cruelest, the fascinating lore of the wolf pack, and the ways of the Wild itself.
