Book Synopsis Ski Jumping in Washington State: A Nordic Tradition by : John W. Lundin
Download or read book Ski Jumping in Washington State: A Nordic Tradition written by John W. Lundin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ski jumping, once Washington's most popular winter sport, was introduced by Norwegian immigrants in the early twentieth century. It began at Spokane's Browne's Mountain and Seattle's Queen Anne Hill, moved to midsummer tournaments on Mount Rainier in 1917 and expanded statewide as new ski clubs formed. Washington tournaments attracted the world's best jumpers--Birger and Sigurd Ruud, Alf Engen, Sigurd Ulland and Reidar Andersen, among others. In 1941, Torger Tokle set two national distance records here in just three weeks. Regional ski areas hosted national and international championships as well as Olympic tryouts, entertaining spectators until Leavenworth's last tournament in 1978. Lawyer, historian and award-winning author John W. Lundin re-creates the excitement of this nearly forgotten ski jumping heritage.

Book Synopsis Inclusion and Exclusion in Competitive Sport by : Seema Patel
Download or read book Inclusion and Exclusion in Competitive Sport written by Seema Patel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society is obsessed with categorising and treating individuals and groups according to their physical and non-physical differences, such as sex, gender, disability and race. This treatment can lead to the inclusion or exclusion of an individual from the tangible and intangible benefits of society. Where this practice becomes discriminatory, legal frameworks can protect human rights and ensure that people are treated with due respect for their similarities and differences. In a sporting context, the inclusion and exclusion of athletes based upon their differences is often a necessary part of the essence of competitive sporting activity, arranged around rules and categories that can have an unequal exclusionary impact on certain classes of individual. Dominant sporting cultures can also have exclusionary effects. This important and innovative book seeks to investigate the socio-legal and regulatory balance between inclusion and exclusion in competitive sport. It critically analyses a range of legal and non-legal cases concerning sport-specific inclusion and exclusion in the areas of sex, gender, disability and race, including those cases involving Oscar Pistorius, Caster Semenya and Luis Suarez, to identify the extent to which the law and sport adopt a justifiable and legitimate inclusive or exclusive approach to participation. The book explores national and international regulatory frameworks, identifying deficiencies and good practice, and concludes with recommendations for regulatory reform. Inclusion and Exclusion in Competitive Sport is important reading for anybody with an interest in the relationship between sport and wider society, sports development, sport management, sports law, or socio-legal studies.

Download or read book Go to the Start written by Michael Janyk and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a third-generation member of a ski-racing family, Mike Janyk fulfills a childhood dream by becoming a world class ski-racer on the biggest stage. He travels to glamourous locales, wins accolades, and enjoys the spotlight and camaraderie that comes with belonging to a national team at the World Cup and the Olympic Games. In this beautifully explored memoir, Janyk chronicles the inner life of an elite athlete from being encouraged in sports by parents hoping to find an outlet for his “excessive energy,” to his rise as a young athlete with big dreams and the will to work for them. He takes us through the emotional whirlwind of victories, defeats, and the eventual need for personal reinvention that come with a life in sport. A deep dive into the psychology of a champion athlete, Go To the Start is painted in many colors as a fascinating, sometimes tormented, but frequently hilarious coming-of-age set in a milieu that most of us would never dream we could enter. In lively, evocative prose, Janyk brings readers into the enchantment of standing in the starting gate on a snowy night, to the self talk and mind-over-matter thinking that overcome an athlete’s anxieties and fears, to the thrill of standing on the winners’ podium. It’s a journey of self-discovery that takes him from great emotional heights and to deeply troubled depths, until he comes to find a new way of being in the world. An intimate look into the emotional journey of a world-class athlete, Go to the Start offers a unique perspective and delivers it with deep insight, honesty, and appealing wit.
