When Raffield's cover became suspect, word spread through a small circle of friends that the young officer would pay with his life. No one stopped it. On a rainy fall evening in 1987, Raffield was lured to an isolated field. Three bullets were fired-one unloaded into his skull. The baby-faced killer, Greg Knighten, stole eighteen dollars from Raffield's wallet, divided it among his two young accomplices, and calmly said, "it's done." With chilling detail, Carlton Stowers illuminates a dark corner of America's heartland and the children who hide there. What he found was an alienated subculture of drug abuse, the occult, and an unfathomable teenage rage that exploded at point blank range on a shocking night of lost innocence...

Download or read book Poetry of the Mind written by Paul Farrugia and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Farrugia is experienced information technologist educated in Australia and has come across a kaleidoscope of technologies; some now antiques in the authors own life time. A technology career would seem at first far removed from any works poetry or even a literary career. Yet are not both means of capturing at the very least a message? Poetry is the time honoured way of capturing vision and the thoughts of mind and heart throughout history. It also has become the authors tool of exploration just as wooden ships were in the past. My unfathomable ocean of discovery is the emotion of heart, love, vision of mind. I search in the mundane drudgery of everyday life, from the highs of loves peaks to desolation of self, in the windswept desert of lioness and everything in between. These are the familiar landscapes we all traverse in life, the very core of who we are inside. In essence this is very meaning of the journey in poetry I have begun.

Book Synopsis The Innocence of the Devil by : Nawal El Saadawi
Download or read book The Innocence of the Devil written by Nawal El Saadawi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-11-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nawal El Saadawi's books are known for their powerful denunciation of patriarchy in its many forms: social, political, and religious. Set in an insane asylum, The Innocence of the Devil is a complex and chilling novel that recasts the relationships of God and Satan, of good and evil. Intertwining the lives of two young women as they discover their sexual and emotional powers, Saadawi weaves a dreamlike narrative that reveals how the patriarchal structures of Christianity and Islam are strikingly similar: physical violation of women is not simply a social or political phenomenon, it is a religious one as well. While more measured in tone than Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses, Saadawi's novel is similar in its linguistic, literary, and philosophical richness. Evoking a world of pain and survival that may be unfamiliar to many readers, it speaks in a universal voice that reaches across cultures and is the author's most potent weapon.

Book Synopsis The Innocent Classroom by : Alexs Pate
Download or read book The Innocent Classroom written by Alexs Pate and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children of color enter their classrooms each year, many often encounter low expectations, disconnection, and other barriers to their success. In The Innocent Classroom, Alexs Pate traces the roots of these disparities to pervasive negative stereotypes, which children are made aware of before they even walk through the school door. The cumulative weight of these stereotypes eventually takes shape as guilt, which inhibits students' engagement, learning, and relationships and hurts their prospects for the future. If guilt is the primary barrier for children of color in the classroom, then the solution, according to Pate, is to create an Innocent Classroom that neutralizes students' guilt and restores their innocence. To do so, readers will embark on a relationship "construction project" in which they will deepen their understanding of how children of color are burdened with guilt; discover students' "good," or the motivation behind their behaviors, and develop strategic responses to that good; and nurture, protect, and advocate for students' innocence. Ultimately, students will reclaim their innocence and begin to make choices that will lead to their success. Teachers will renew their commitment to their students. And the current ineffective system can give way to one that reflects a more enlightened understanding of who our children are—and what they are capable of.

At the time, the book was widely welcomed by Shakespearean scholars as a trenchant, scholarly and highly orginal contribution to the field of Shakespearean studies. The book's argument is that a full response to Shakespearean tragedy has to take account of the fate of the victims as well as of the tragic heroesl and this thesis is illustrated and developed by a consideration of Lavinia, Lucrece and the children in Richard III, Macbeth and King John; and to the thee principal Shakespearean tragic victims, Ophelia, Desemona and Cordelia.
