Download or read book Hidden in His Own Story written by Andrew Walton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden in His Own Story is an invitation to reconsider and re-imagine both the humanity and divinity of Jesus. It is an invitation to people who are not familiar with the Bible stories and have only heard them through other sources, also to many who have rejected traditional interpretations of the stories as religious dogma, and to many people who are so steeped in the stories that they have become cliche. Even the most clever storyteller or writer of fiction can never totally disguise or deny their personal influence on the story. And most of us have had the experience of someone beginning a story with, "I know a person who . . . " when in fact that "person" is the one telling the story. Why not imagine the same when Jesus says, "Once there was a man . . . ?"

Book Synopsis Colin Gunton and the Failure of Augustine by : Bradley G. Green
Download or read book Colin Gunton and the Failure of Augustine written by Bradley G. Green and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Gunton argued that Augustine bequeathed to the West a theological tradition with serious deficiencies. According to Gunton, Augustine's particular construal of the doctrine of God led to fundamental errors and problems in grasping the relationship between creation and redemption, and in rightfully construing a truly Christian ontology. Bradley G. Green's close reading of Augustine challenges Gunton's understanding. Gunton argued that Augustine's supposed emphasis of the one over the many severed any meaningful link between creation and redemption (contra the theological insights of Irenaeus); and that because of Augustine's supposed emphasis on the timeless essence of God at the expense of the three real persons, Augustine failed to forge a truly Christian ontology (effectively losing the insights of the Cappadocian Fathers). For all of Gunton's insights (and there are many), Green argues that Augustine did not sever the link between creation and redemption, but rather affirmed that the created order is a means of genuine knowledge of God, the created order is indeed the only means by which redemption is accomplished, the cross of Christ is the only means by which we can see God, and the created order is fundamentally oriented toward a telos-- redemption. Concerning ontology, Augustine's teaching on the imago Dei, and the prominent role that relationship plays in Augustine's doctrines of man and God, provides the kind of relational Christian ontology that Gunton sought. In short, Green argues, Augustine could have provided Gunton key theological resources in countering the modernity he so rightfully challenged.

Book Synopsis The Life I Now Live by : Rich S. Brown III
Download or read book The Life I Now Live written by Rich S. Brown III and published by Rich S. Brown III. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life I Now Live recounts the life and ministry of J. Gresham Machen, the founder of Westminster Theological Seminary (1929), the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (1936), and the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions (1933). This book takes you on a journey back to the early twentieth century when historic, Evangelical Christianity was met with intense opposition by the Theological Liberals known as Modernists. The Presbyterian Church (USA) in the North split over the "Fundamentalist-Modernist divide," and the leading institutions of the day did the same, including Princeton Theological Seminary. Many key leaders in the Protestant Church theologically criticized the person and redeeming work of Jesus Christ and the Bible, which is the inerrant, inspired, and authoritative word of God. J. Gresham Machen led the Evangelical Church amidst much turmoil, confusion, and deconstruction with absolute integrity and a steadfast spirit. Though he was well known and beloved within the Evangelical Church in his own day, the story of how he defended the historic Christian Faith has been largely forgotten a century later. The Life I Now Live explores Machen's defense of the gospel, his teaching and preaching ministry, and his evangelistic zeal. It is also written in commemoration of his classic work Christianity and Liberalism (1923). But it is so much more than just a biography! This book encourages "ordinary" Christians to see themselves as those who can indeed defend the Truth in today's age of Postliberalism (Postmodernism), unbiblical Gender Ideology, Critical Race Theory, and Deconstructionism. The Evangelical Church is now in a moment of crisis in which we must choose today whom we will serve. Will you serve the Lord God? And if so, how will you defend the Faith in today's culture? Read this book to find out how!
