Book excerpt: Once upon a time there was a sleepy oceanside town in South Florida that came to life for only two weeks every springtime. Then a midwestern English professor wrote a cheeky novel based on his observations of college guys and girls on Spring Break 1959 as they chased each other across the surf and sand in search of that perfect someone. When the novel Where the Boys Are was released in early 1960 and the movie version debuted at the end of that year, it put Fort Lauderdale on the lips and to-do lists of millions of North American college students and other fun-seekers for much of the next three decades. The city dubbed "The Venice of America" welcomed everyone and the party still hasn't stopped!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a collection of 18 papers dealing with the problem of word order variation in discourse. Word order variation has often been treated as an essentially unpredictable phenomenon, a matter of selecting randomly one of the set of possible orders generated by the grammar. However, as the papers in this collection show, word order variation is not random, but rather governed by principles which can be subjected to scientific investigation and are common to all languages. The papers in this volume discuss word order variation in a diverse collection of languages and from a number of perspectives, including experimental and quantitative text based studies. A number of papers address the problem of deciding which order is 'basic' among the alternatives. The volume will be of interest to typologists, to other linguists interested in problems of word order variation, and to those interested in discourse syntax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the recollections of "Ragtime Bob" Darch (1920-2002) told in his own words and transcribed by his longtime friend Steve Spracklen. Bob begins by recalling his life from childhood in Detroit through his college years and then service in World War II as an army paratrooper and in the Korean conflict as an Alaskan post engineer. Then he recounts his nearly six decades as an itinerant ragtime piano player sharing stories as only Bob could tell them of the many celebrities with whom he worked and the countless tales of his experiences "on the Ragtime Trail." Bob entertained his audiences with music and stories of ragtime, past and present. He was not encumbered by facts...he had a story to tell. Bob died in 2002 at the age of 82 and he is buried in Sedalia, Missouri where he often said his style of classic ragtime music began. March 31, 2020 marked the centennial of his birth and like he said of ragtime, Bob's legacy isn't dead, it isn't even sick.

Just when everyone else is getting on, 17-year-old Aaron O'Faolain wants off. But first he has to complete his Application for Termination, and in order to do that he has to deal with his History-not to mention the present, including his grandfather's suicide and a series of clues that may (or may not) lead to buried treasure. As he attempts to unravel the mystery, Aaron is sidetracked again . . . and again. Shadowed by his virtual "best friend," Homie, Aaron struggles with love, loss, dog bites, community theater, wild horses, wildfires, and the fact (deep breath) that actual reality can sometimes surprise you. Sean McGinty's strikingly profound debut unearths a world that is eerily familiar, yet utterly original. Discover what it means to come to the end of fun.

Book excerpt: “Impressive....De Haven writes about people from many levels of society, both in his fantasy setting and in the contemporary world; in so doing, he reflects the complexity that many of us forget to notice in our day-to-day living. This is a major fantasy story; miss it at your peril.” —Locus Jack, a Walker, is in danger. He has learned a secret; he has earned an enemy. And the Mage of Four, Mage of Luck, is a powerful enemy indeed. Jack must flee the world of Lostwithal. He must flee to Kemolo. To our world. The secret he carries could mean the end of all the worlds, not just his own. The Epicene is coming, and with it a gate will open through which chaos will flow, overwhelming the universes. But Jack cannot violate the Order of Things, not even to preserve it. Until he can present what he has learned to the King, he must hide. And there is nowhere in Lostwithal that is safe from the Mage of Four. Mage of Luck, Jack, a Walker, must walk between the worlds. Even here he is not safe. His enemies can pursue him through the streets of our world, tracking him with magically infallible instinct. All the vast powers of the Mage of Four, Mage of Luck, are arrayed against him. But Jack is not alone. He has gathered a small group of unlikely, sometimes unwilling allies: Geebo, a man whose memory has been brutally erased; Jere Lee, a woman who has lost everything but her dignity; Herb Dierickx, chauffeur to the wealthy and powerful Gene Boman; and Money Campbell, the boy billionaire’s calculating mistress. In the ultimate confrontation, their efforts will determine the fate of the universes. “Tom De Haven’s work combines a soaring imagination, a gift for character acting and a curiosity for fantastic lives.” —The Washington Post “One of my five favorite writers in the world.” —Harlan Ellison

Book excerpt: "This is your last day. Be strong. Don't hesitate. Cut and run. An exit with no return." Idris Alis confessional novel opens with these words, spoken on an unbearably hot August afternoon in downtown Cairo, where the Nubian narrator has just decided, once and for all, to end his life. Delirious and thirsty, he wanders around venting his resentments large and small, his sexual frustrations, and his sense of powerlessness in the face of unremitting injustice. He seeks to expunge his failed life in the Nile: the river that had been the life blood of his country for millennia, and that with Egypt's new dam now drowns Nubia, flinging her dispossessed sons north and south into exile. Many years ago, the narrator was one of those sons, fleeing flood and famine only to arrive in Cairo, penniless and shoeless, in time to see it go up in flames, the old regime overthrown by "the men in tanks." Poor is the story of a life of hardship, adversity, and emotional starvation. It is also the story of opportunities squandered and hopes traded away for nothing of a life lived, at times, all too poorly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating look into the society of the Knights Templar Brought to you by the author of Freemasons For Dummies, The Templar Code is more than an intriguing cipher or a mysterious symbol – it is the Code by which the Knights Templar lived and died, the Code that bound them together in secrecy, and the Code that inspired them to nearly superhuman feats of courage and endurance. The Templar Code for Dummies reveals the meaning behind the cryptic codes and secret rituals of the medieval brotherhood of warrior monks known as the Knights Templar. This intriguing guide will cover such topics as who the Knights Templar were, how they rose so high and fell so far, and most importantly why there is so much interest in them today. The Templar Code For Dummies will explore myths and theories of Christian history that appear in the Da Vinci Code such as the quest for the Holy Grail, the Catholic Church's relationship with women that are hotly debated now with special emphasis on the Templar connection. It also explores the surprising part the Templars have played in some of the most important historic events of these past seven centuries, including the French Revolution, the birth of groups such as the Freemasons, and even the American Civil War.
