Book excerpt: Should we stay or should we go? Millions of parents with children in public schools can't believe they're asking this question. But they are. And you should be asking it too. Almost overnight, America's public schools have become morally toxic. And they are especially poisonous for the hearts and minds of children from religious families of every faith—ordinary families who value traditional morality and plain old common sense. Parents' first duty is to their children—to their intellect, their character, their souls. The facts on the ground point to one conclusion: get out now.

But every student is unique. One type of school might be a great fit for your neighbor's child, but it might not work for your son or daughter. Across the country, many parents today have more choices for their children's education than ever before. If you are starting the process of finding your child's first school—or if you want to choose a new learning environment—The School Choice Roadmap is for you. This first-of-its-kind book offers a practical, jargon-free overview of school choice policies, from public school open enrollment to private school scholarships and more. It breaks down the similarities and differences between traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, online public schools, private schools, and homeschooling. Most importantly, The School Choice Roadmap offers a seven-step process that will help you harness the power of your own intuition—and your own expertise about your child's uniqueness—to help you find a school that reflects your family's goals, values, and priorities. Filled with sage advice from dozens of other parents who have pursued the school search process, and interviews with school leaders and teachers, The School Choice Roadmap is an optimistic, empowering book that cuts through the confusion in K-12 education—so that you can give your children every opportunity to succeed in school and in life.

Book excerpt: As a parent you wonder how you will pick the best school for your child to attend? You have three choices as a parent; public, private or home schooling. Even if you are paying tuition for a school, the deciding factors are always important. In Volume 1, I will go over the three types of schools, public, private and home school. I will break them down into sub-categories and explain each one to you and then go over the pros and cons of each type of school. Hopefully this information will help you in deciding what type of school you want to send your child to.If you're determined to have someone else teach your child, then the age long debate of private school or public school will cross your mind on more than one occasion. So many factors come into play when making this decision. One of them being finances. That is, your financial situation. Then of course deciding on what is best for your child. Some wonder how can we possibly compare two things that are so different? It's like comparing night and day or oranges and apples. How can we compare two different things that are so obviously not held to the same standards?I went to private Catholic school for my years of education up until the ninth grade. My first eight years were a co-ed private Catholic school, then I attended an all-girls private Catholic school, then I went on to a public co-ed high school. I've seen the differences in the amount of education that is emphasized. When it comes down to it, you get what you pay for. It's like buying a more expensive car. It looks better, runs better and is sharper and probably has more whistles and bells on it. But, if you go the economical way and buy a car that is not so expensive, it will still get you places where you want to go. Well, it all depends on how you go about doing it though. There are many public schools out there that offer the same kind of education that a private school would. Take into consideration the schools that offer honors courses or advanced placement courses. A lot of public high schools offer college prep courses. It depends on how serious you and your child will be taking their education and not just “go through the system” to get it over and done with. This is your child's future you are talking about and it should mean the world to you.

Book excerpt: Too often books about disobedient children are not helpful to parents because they offer one approach for all children who misbehave. In reality, there are different causes for rebellious behavior. A child could be strong-willed or could have a more serious problem like bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or an autistic spectrum disorder. Or the problem might be with a parent's emotional state or with the marriage. Dr. Gottlieb helps parents figure out the underlying cause for their child's behavior. Your Child is Defiant: Why is Nothing Working? is unique in two important ways: 1) it explains the diagnostic process in a way parents can apply to their own son or daughter, and 2) it shows parents what to do for each possible cause. This book is the first detailed step-by-step guide for parents whose children repeatedly misbehave.
