Book Synopsis An Entirely Synthetic Fish by : Anders Halverson
Download or read book An Entirely Synthetic Fish written by Anders Halverson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anders Halverson provides an exhaustively researched and grippingly rendered account of the rainbow trout and why it has become the most commonly stocked and controversial freshwater fish in the United States. Discovered in the remote waters of northern California, rainbow trout have been artificially propagated and distributed for more than 130 years by government officials eager to present Americans with an opportunity to get back to nature by going fishing. Proudly dubbed an entirely synthetic fish by fisheries managers, the rainbow trout has been introduced into every state and province in the United States and Canada and to every continent except Antarctica, often with devastating effects on the native fauna. Halverson examines the paradoxes and reveals a range of characters, from nineteenth-century boosters who believed rainbows could be the saviors of democracy to twenty-first-century biologists who now seek to eradicate them from waters around the globe. Ultimately, the story of the rainbow trout is the story of our relationship with the natural world--how it has changed and how it startlingly has not.
Download or read book Squaretail written by Bob Mallard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brook trout are native in the Eastern United States and were the most important fly rod gamefish for early anglers, until they were supplanted by nonnative brown and rainbow trout. Today, brook trout are indicators of cold, clean water and healthy ecosystems, and in almost every place they are found, anglers will also find wild country and relative solitude. They have been introduced throughout the Rocky Mountains, where they grow large and abundant. This is the most complete guide to brook trout ever written and not only includes information on tackle and techniques but important conservation information and an in-depth section on top brook trout destinations, from Maine to Argentina. With a foreword by Ted Williams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely new flyfishing guide to New England is the best flyfishing guide ever on this fishery-rich and historic area. Author and flyfishing guide Lou Zambello provides all the information to improve your catch rate in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Masschusetts. Full-color maps accompany the fisheries, complete with GPS coordinates, access points, public land, access roads, boat ramps (including small hand launches), parking areas, named holes and pools and more. Many flyfishers flock to the same well-known waters that are written about again and again and face crowded conditions. Yet there are hundreds of productive waters that are ignored. Zambello, who has spent over 30 years fishing in New England, teamed with former Maine State Fisheries Director John Boland and other experts to cover many of these great uncrowded waters in the Flyfisher's Guide to New England. Lou spent the last several years criss-crossing New England researching this book, a review of many hundreds of both popular and unknown, moving and stillwaters in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Following Wilderness Adventures Press' tradition of creating the best flyfishing guide books, the new full-color Flyfisher's Guide to New England will help you get your own piece of fishing heaven. Download or read book Wild Trout written by Michael Carl and published by Michael Carl. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Trout details ten of California's most scenic, diverse, and significant wild trout fisheries. In fact, the California Fish and Game Commission has included most of these streams within the state's "Wild Trout Program." Selecting the top ten wild trout streams in California began a process for me of choosing equal parts good fishing and good scenery. The exception being those streams holding bigger than average trout getting extra consideration. During the planning and design of this book, however, serious conflict characterized the selection process. As an angler I leaned strongly toward the trophy trout waters. But, as a photographer I got swept up in the visuals of a place. In the end, I went with my gut feel on which streams were my top 10 wild trout streams.

Book excerpt: The first Wild Trout Symposium (1974) was sponsored by Trout Unlimited and the United States Department of the Interior. The second Symposium (1979) added the Federation of Fly Fisherman as a sponsor. Five years later (1984) the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Forest Service joined. In 1989 , the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the American Fisheries Society joined. These symposia began with a concentration on management, then recognized that more than 'management' was required in ongoing efforts to enhance wild salmonid fisheries. Subsequent symposia began to examine a broader range of environmental and social factors influencing wild salmonids. The originators hoped that each symposium would be a building block upon which the succeeding symposium could provide insights and research which future sessions could revisit. Along with the broadening of sponsorship, we have grown , we have gained recognition, and we look forward to expanding our contribution to the cause of wild salmonids. We hope these Proceedings will stimulate readers thinking and efforts on behalf of our wild salmonid resources , and plan to participate with us in Wild Trout V.

Book Synopsis The Voices of Rivers by : Matthew Dickerson
Download or read book The Voices of Rivers written by Matthew Dickerson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickerson's lovingly crafted narratives take us to waters from sockeye spawning streams of Alaska's Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks, to Rocky Mountain rivers in the national parks and forests of Montana and Wyoming, to the little brook trout creeks in his home waters of Maine. Along the way we will fall in love with arctic streams, glacial rivers flowing green with flour, alpine brooks tumbling out of melting snow, and little estuaries where lobsters and brook trout swim within a few yards of each other; with wide deep lakes, little mountain tarns with crystal clear water, and tannin-laden beaver ponds the color of tea. The narratives are creative, personal, and compelling, yet informed by science and history as well as close observation and the eye of a naturalist. The characters in the stories are fascinating, from fly fishing guides to fisheries biologists to wranglers to Dickerson himself who often explores the rivers with a fly rod in hand, but whose writing transcends any sort of fishing narrative. But the most important characters are the rivers themselves whose stories Dickerson tells, and whose music he helps us to hear.
