Book Synopsis Living with Mild Brain Injury by : Pauline O'Connor
Download or read book Living with Mild Brain Injury written by Pauline O'Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book presents a unique, personal account of the impact a mild traumatic brain injury can have. It tells the story of Pauline, who was 33 when a late football tackle caused a bleed in her brain which went undiscovered for 18 months. The account includes descriptions of hidden symptoms of concussion and post-concussion syndrome, pitfalls in diagnoses, the uneven progress of recovery and the effect of the varied reactions which others have to an acquired brain injury. The author incorporates memories alongside extracts from clinic notes, diary entries and emails to reflect the disjointed progress of diagnosis and recovery as- although similar- no two head injuries are the same. Through this book, the reader gains an appreciation of the confusion experienced by many brain injury survivors, which sheds light on why some may develop unusual behavior or mental health issues, and how such issues can be alleviated. Brain injuries are poorly understood by the general public and this can lead to difficult interactions. Moreover, complications in diagnosis means some may not realize they have this milder form of brain injury. This book will enlighten brain injury survivors and affected families and allow professionals an insight into their patients’ experiences. As concerns grow over the risks which contact sports pose, this book shows how even mild brain injuries can wreak havoc with careers, relationships and one’s sense of self, but that a happy life can still be found.

Book Synopsis Simplicius: On Epictetus Handbook 27-53 by : Charles Brittain
Download or read book Simplicius: On Epictetus Handbook 27-53 written by Charles Brittain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enchiridion or Handbook of the first-century AD Stoic Epictetus was used as an ethical treatise both in Christian monasteries and by the sixth-century pagan Neoplatonist Simplicius. Simplicius chose it for beginners, rather than Aristotle's Ethics, because it presupposed no knowledge of logic. We thus get a fascinating chance to see how a pagan Neoplatonist transformed Stoic ideas. The text was relevant to Simplicius because he too, like Epictetus, was teaching beginners how to take the first steps towards eradicating emotion, although he is unlike Epictetus in thinking that they should give up public life rather than acquiesce, if public office is denied them. Simplicius starts from a Platonic definition of the person as rational soul, not body, ignoring Epictetus' further whittling down of himself to just his will or policy decisions. He selects certain topics for special attention in chapters 1, 8, 27 and 31. Things are up to us, despite Fate. Our sufferings are not evil, but providential attempts to turn us from the body. Evil is found only in the human soul. But evil is parasitic (Proclus' term) on good. The gods exist, are provident, and cannot be bought off. With nearly all of this the Stoics would agree, but for quite different reasons, and their own distinctions and definitions are to a large extent ignored. This translation of the Handbook is published in two volumes. This is the second volume, covering chapters 27-53; the first covers chapters 1-26.

This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Contemporary research on major emotional disorders emphasizes their commonalities rather than their differences. This research continues to lend support for a unified transdiagnostic approach to treatment of these disorders that considers their commonalities and is applicable to a range of emotional problems. Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders provides an alternative to disorder-specific treatments of various emotional disorders, designed to be applicable to the wide range of anxiety and other disorders with strong emotional components. The Therapist Guide and accompanying client Workbook present an eight-module therapy program that puts substantial emphasis on emotion-focused approaches, helping clients confront and experience challenging emotions while teaching them how to regulate those emotions. Expanded considerably in this second edition, the volume provides guidance on using the Unified Protocol (UP) to address problems not only with anxiety, but also with depression, eating disorders, non-suicidal self-injury, substance use, and anger. Treatment procedures have been further elucidated and more guidance is provided to practitioners on how to present key treatment concepts. Chapters brand new to this updated edition introduce functional assessment and describe how to provide the UP in a group format, while patient materials have been revised, streamlined, and made more user-friendly."--Back cover.
