Denniele Bohannon’s great-grandfather Almo O’Kell served as a medic in World War I and was one of the many soldiers who never came home. Together with Janice Britz, she created the Kansas City Star’s block-of-the-month quilt, Remembering Almo, to honor those who served their country at the centennial of the Great War. Two color variations and setting options are given for the main quilt. Three more striking quilts, two variations of a table runner and a poppy pin and pincushion round out the projects. Also included is information about Almo’s life, with photos and brief excerpts from his letters.

Book Synopsis Where the Wild Poppies Grow by : Kevin Bell
Download or read book Where the Wild Poppies Grow written by Kevin Bell and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have known Kevin Bell since he joined The Queen's Royal Lancers in Germany in 1996. Our paths have crossed frequently since then, and I was honoured to attend his Induction as Vicar at All Hallows Church Twickenham. He was a great military chaplain. He was always in the right place at the right time, with the knack of understanding what our soldiers were really thinking. He also, always spoke truth to power - a rare quality. So, we all admired, respected and loved him. These thoughtful - and sometimes haunting - poems, cover a period of high operational tempo for the British Army. I recommend that you read them, slowly over the weeks ahead. You will quickly realise that Padre Kevin cared deeply about those under his spiritual wing. You will also be reminded that there is a price to pay for all our Padres, who are asked to deal, as their daily bread and butter, with the darkest parts of life and death... General Sir James Everard - KCB CBE Caroline Wyatt - is a distinguished War Correspondent and Journalist. We met at The Guards' Chapel in London where I was Senior Chaplain. I retired from the army in 2015 and became a Vicar in the Diocese of London. In that role I sent Caroline two of my poems. She responded so warmly that I decided to select more poems with a military flavour. She read all of them and encouraged my plans to produce this book. Remembering and Remembrance are the obvious themes throughout all that I have written in these pages. But it is also important: to give something back. Hence the small but significant charity that I have elected to support with this book. Please consider supporting those who have paid a price for the freedoms we enjoy. Kevin Bell - Vicar of All Hallows Church Twickenham

Download or read book Where Poppies Blow written by John Lewis-Stempel and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Wainwright Golden Beer Book Prize for nature writing The natural history of the Western Front during the First World War 'If it weren't for the birds, what a hell it would be.' During the Great War, soldiers lived inside the ground, closer to nature than many humans had lived for centuries. Animals provided comfort and interest to fill the blank hours in the trenches - bird-watching, for instance, was probably the single most popular hobby among officers. Soldiers went fishing in flooded shell holes, shot hares in no-man's land for the pot, and planted gardens in their trenches and billets. Nature was also sometimes a curse - rats, spiders and lice abounded, and disease could be biblical. But above all, nature healed, and, despite the bullets and blood, it inspired men to endure. Where Poppies Blow is the unique story of how nature gave the British soldiers of the Great War a reason to fight, and the will to go on.

In the summer of 1914, she is not even looking for love. Alice Weatherly turns Rose's world upside down. The loveable young heiress longs to kiss Captain Charlie Summers goodbye - she takes Rose to Liverpool's Lime Street station and into the heart of Charlie's brother Harry. Even though they are neighbours, they have never met, for Rose ignores the social round, while Harry's time is taken up desperately attempting to keep his father's ramshackle estate together. He becomes the master of Summer Place, a magnificent mansion with a proud history. He is only too glad when it becomes a hospital for wounded soldiers. As the war takes its terrible toll and Charlie disappears into the fog of battle, Alice - the spoilt runaway heiress - becomes a heroine, while Rose finds herself running two great houses. It seems impossible that any of them can ever find happiness again . . .
