When they left for college, Charlie and Dora found empty nest freedom and regularly attended a neighborhood bar on the weekends. Their next-door neighbors moved out, and a younger show business couple, the Reynoldses, who had traveled most of the world, moved in. Randy was a producer of fashion shows, theater, and musicians. Camile was a tall, beautiful, shapely blonde who was retired but had been a fashion model since she was in her teens. Book excerpt: Life Takes Place argues that, even in our mobile, hypermodern world, human life is impossible without place. Seamon asks the question: why does life take place? He draws on examples of specific places and place experiences to understand place more broadly. Advocating for a holistic way of understanding that he calls "synergistic relationality," Seamon defines places as spatial fields that gather, activate, sustain, identify, and interconnect things, human beings, experiences, meanings, and events. Throughout his phenomenological explication, Seamon recognizes that places are multivalent in their constitution and sophisticated in their dynamics. Drawing on British philosopher J. G. Bennett’s method of progressive approximation, he considers place and place experience in terms of their holistic, dialectical, and processual dimensions. Recognizing that places always change over time, Seamon examines their processual dimension by identifying six generative processes that he labels interaction, identity, release, realization, intensification, and creation. Drawing on practical examples from architecture, planning, and urban design, he argues that an understanding of these six place processes might contribute to a more rigorous place making that produces robust places and propels vibrant environmental experiences. This book is a significant contribution to the growing research literature in "place and place making studies."

Book excerpt: John Tamberlain is The Tomahawk, the universe’s most feared food critic – though he himself prefers the term ‘forensic gastronomer’. He’s on a quest, in search of the much-storied Hotel Grand Skies, a secretive and exclusive haven where the rich and famous retreat to bask in perfect seclusion. A place where the waiters know their fish knife from their butter knife, their carotid from their subclavian artery, and are trained to enforce the house rules with brutal efficiency. Blurring the lines between detective story, horror and sci-fi, Hunters & Collectors is a mesmeric trip into the singular imagination of M. Suddain – a freewheeling talent whose poise, invention and sensational sentences have already earned him comparisons to Vonnegut, Pynchon and Douglas Adams.

Book excerpt: 21 Promises combines the clarity of the gospel and the authenticity of life stories to accurately reveal the abiding promises of God displayed in our lives. In some cases, we fail to recognize Gods presence as we endure present times. However, the beauty of the gospel comes to a brief fruition when we step away from the window and observe Gods sustaining work arising in each of our days. The purpose of focusing on the promises of God found in Scripture originates from a lack of Biblical understanding in our generation. As young adults in a liberal society, the value of gathering an accurate understanding of Gods promises remains crucially important. Friends, family, and professors might teach or share false ideas about God, prompting young adults to doubt his existence, his goodness, and his authority. With the help of Scripture, 21 Promises teaches adults, young and old, to understand with their minds and believe with their hearts in the unfailing promises of God. Likewise, the creative narrative of this book allows the reader to witness stories from a first-person perspective before reflecting on Gods promises as a third-person party. In essence, the hope of this book focuses on the readers observation of the promises of God displayed in Scripture and real life events, regardless of their history and knowledge of God. Without Gods promises, we live confused lives; yet, he makes himself present and available through these divine revelations.

Book Synopsis What It Takes by : Mark Herzlich

Book excerpt: In 2011, he became starting linebacker for the New York Giants and triumphed in the Super Bowl—after being told his cancer diagnosis meant he would never play football again.... As a child, Herzlich found true meaning in football, eventually turning his passion into a first-team All-American spot at Boston College. But the budding star was sidelined by persistent, debilitating pain in his left leg. The shocking diagnosis: He had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Doctors put his odds of survival as low as ten percent—and no one thought he would be able to run, much less play football, again. Then Herzlich learned of a radical treatment that would give him the best chance to regain his strength and maybe even play football again, but it could cost him his life. Relying on family, friends, faith, and deep wells of determination to help him through treatment, his plan worked. Not only could he run, but he was physically stronger than ever, and mentally ready to battle his way into the NFL. When he was passed over by all thirty-two teams in the draft, he dug deeper and continued his training, winning a spot in the Giants’ training camp and, eventually, on the team. Mark Herzlich fought a battle against cancer, against statistics, and some days against himself. Told with candor and raw emotion, What It Takes is a story for anyone who has ever fought to beat the odds, for anyone who has ever been told that what they are about to attempt is next to impossible.
