Book excerpt: I distinctly remember the afternoon of 22 May 2016 when the news on television flashed Dr Kiran Bedi appointed LG of Puducherry. As much as I was delighted that Kiranji, who had been my inspiration since childhood, was going to occupy such an important constitutional post, I had butterflies in my stomach. Butterflies because I had just received a confirmation from her to be at my college for an important event in September and now this posting! I wondered what would happen. Will she still honor the invitation? I sent her a congratulatory message and reminded her about the invitation. She replied saying, "Will keep up my commitment with you. "This was my first personal interaction with Kiranji or "Maam" as I refer to her now. I have been in awe of her work as LG and have been fortunate to be a part of her creative team and even work with her closely. She calls me her "K-pedia" and I call her my forever inspiration and my godmother. True to her leadership style, she redefined the role of the LG. She defined her purpose of being there to be on a mission to serve people and make Puducherry a "Prosperous Puducherry" . She has remained self-driven and has carved a special place for herself in the constitutional history of our country as an LG who refused to be a rubber stamp, but one who opened the gates of Rajivs to the common people and served them with utmost love and affection. Her kindness spoke through her work and won the hearts of the people. When it comes to kindness as a leadership trait, some people believe that this could be a weakness. But actually kindness strengthens leadership.

With its powerful anti-bullying message and striking art, it will resonate with readers long after they've put it down. Chloe and her friends won't play with the new girl, Maya. Every time Maya tries to join Chloe and her friends, they reject her. Eventually Maya stops coming to school. When Chloe's teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she'd shown a little kindness toward Maya.

Being kind when we don’t feel like it, or when all of our buttons are being pushed, is hard. But that’s also when it’s most needed; that’s when it can defuse anger and even violence, when it can restore civility in our personal and virtual interactions. Kindness has the power to profoundly change our relationships with other people and with ourselves. It can, in fact, change the world. In A Year of Living Kindly—using stories, observation, humor, and summaries of expert research—Donna Cameron shares her experience committing to 365 days of practicing kindness. She presents compelling research into the myriad benefits of kindness, including health, wealth, longevity, improved relationships, and personal and business success. She explores what a kind life entails, and what gets in the way of it. And she provides practical and experiential suggestions for how each of us can strengthen our kindness muscle so choosing a life of kindness becomes ever easier and more natural. An inspiring, practical guide that can help any reader make a commitment to kindness, A Year of Living Kindly shines a light on how we can create a better, safer, and more just world—and how you can be part of that transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Gospel of Pure Human Kindness, Charles F. Tekula, Jr. brings to light the very nature of Jesus the Nazorean in an eminently readable interpretive adaptation of the Gospel According to St. John, taken from the King James. By updating the phraseology with familiar terms and idioms and putting the chapters into standard book format, sans numbered verses, Tekula has put the fullness of the story back into the message. He illuminates the true heart of the Gospel by replacing the narrator's identification of Jesus from his angelically given Greek name (meaning God Saves") to the English "Pure Human Kindness." In this way it is transformed from a name that modern civilization gives as many meanings to as there are philosophies and cultures within it, to one whose interpretation is singular, point on and unmistakable. As the author explains in his introduction, Jesus showed Himself to be, by His very words and actions, a "pure human kindness with the power and authority of Almighty God to back it up." To read "The Gospel of Pure Human Kindness" is to meet the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the form of His living metaphor, Jesus, the Davidic Galilean Jew, who inspired the Apostle John to write the everlasting words, "God is love."(I John 4:16)

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Brené Brown has taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong, and brave the wilderness. Now, based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers, and culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead. Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart! NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BLOOMBERG Leadership is not about titles, status, and wielding power. A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for recognizing the potential in people and ideas, and has the courage to develop that potential. When we dare to lead, we don’t pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don’t see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it with others. We don’t avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into vulnerability when it’s necessary to do good work. But daring leadership in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty requires skill-building around traits that are deeply and uniquely human. The irony is that we’re choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the exact same time as we’re scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines and AI can’t do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection, and courage, to start. Four-time #1 New York Times bestselling author Brené Brown has spent the past two decades studying the emotions and experiences that give meaning to our lives, and the past seven years working with transformative leaders and teams spanning the globe. She found that leaders in organizations ranging from small entrepreneurial startups and family-owned businesses to nonprofits, civic organizations, and Fortune 50 companies all ask the same question: How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders, and how do you embed the value of courage in your culture? In this new book, Brown uses research, stories, and examples to answer these questions in the no-BS style that millions of readers have come to expect and love. Brown writes, “One of the most important findings of my career is that daring leadership is a collection of four skill sets that are 100 percent teachable, observable, and measurable. It’s learning and unlearning that requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with your whole heart. Easy? No. Because choosing courage over comfort is not always our default. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and our work. It’s why we’re here.” Whether you’ve read Daring Greatly and Rising Strong or you’re new to Brené Brown’s work, this book is for anyone who wants to step up and into brave leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How kindness—and other prosocial behaviors toward others—can help us live longer and healthier lives. The science is in: being good is actually good for you. In this bracingly original book, The Biology of Kindness—the first in a trilogy on the topic of daily wellness—the science of mindfulness and the findings of biology come together to show how kindness and optimism improve overall well-being in profound, organic, and demonstrable ways. Daniel Lumera, an expert in meditation and mindfulness, and Immaculata De Vivo, a preeminent researcher in molecular epidemiology, outline a revolutionary approach to health, longevity, and quality of life—and explain the scientific evidence that supports their work. Identifying five fundamental values—kindness, optimism, forgiveness, gratitude, and happiness—and describing six essential strategies for cultivating these values—relationships, nutrition, physical activity, meditation, music, and connection with nature—De Vivo and Lumera chart a practical course for pursuing a long, healthy, and happy life. Along the way they provide the scientific data that reveal the impact such behavior has on biology, particularly on telomeres, the parts of DNA that serve as biomarkers of aging. While DNA is mostly immutable, telomeres are influenced by our choices, and The Biology of Kindness offers incontrovertible evidence that what is commonly ascribed to “spiritual” well-being has a clear and direct impact on physical health, helping to buffer premature aging and decrease the incidence of chronic disease. At a time when life seems to be ruled by a desire to get “everything and immediately,” Lumera observes, there is a compelling case to be made for the discipline of devotion, dedication, and passion—for the good of the body as well as the soul.

Book excerpt: After her husband's death and her own breakdown, from which she has been rescued by her good friend Sashie, Janet Sandison sets sail from her West Indian home to return to Scotland and make a new life for herself as an author. She is beset by doubts, but as the days pass aboard R.M.S. Mnemosyne the personalities and dramas of her fellow passengers claim her attention more and more, not least of all the puckish child Helga, and the three elephantine sisters, the Misses Kindness, whose mission in life is to make everyone as much like themselves as possible. Behind their backs they are soon nicknamed 'The Friendly Ones' for, like the Furies of Greek mythology, they must be placated as well as, if possible, avoided. There are other Furies aboard too, for each passenger has his or her private interior demon; but in the young Second Engineer Janet finds an unexpected and rewarding friend, and as the ship draws near to England the threads of all their lives dramatically come together for a while. The deep vein of truth that underlies all Jane Duncan's books is here at its most impressive and, together with her sharp observation of human nature and her story-telling skill, make this one of her most compelling novels.
