I write about expectations and our ability to fulfill them or fail to do the same . . . what can go wrong, what does go wrong, how much beatings hurt and how much kisses heal . . . about the terrors and wonder of childhood, the terrors and wonder of aging, about sexuality, gender and loneliness.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the importance of agglomeration economies and institutions vis-a-vis initial conditions and factor endowments in explaining the locational choice of foreign investors. Using a unique panel data set for 25 transition economies between 1990 and 1998, we find that the main determinants are institutions, agglomeration, and trade openness. We find important differences between the Eastern European and Baltic countries, on the one hand, and the CIS countries on the other: in the latter group, natural resources and infrastructure matter, while agglomeration matters only for the former group.

Did the American Indians descend from the inhabitants of an alien spacecraft that crashed in the Alaska-Canada region thousands of years ago? Starcrash indicates that aliens continued to come to Earth, some intentionally and by accident, throughout our history. In order to adjust to harsh conditions they were forced to interbreed with the local aborigines. This was the only way to insure the survival of their race. Does their blood still flow in the veins of certain American Indian tribes?

Sample Book Insights: #1 We were flying over Rocky Mountain National Park, thirty miles to the northwest. Our pilot, David Kunkel, was navigating with the help of an iPad Mini. People don’t usually think altitude is affecting them, but if you ask them to count backward from a hundred by sevens, they have trouble. #2 I looked up Kunkel on Google and was dismayed to discover that he had landed his Cessna 340 on a highway in the Rockies after losing both engines. But I realized that nothing like that could happen to us, because the plane he would be using for our trip had just one engine. #3 The Grand Ditch, which was built with pickaxes and black powder in 1890, moves water across the Continental Divide at La Poudre Pass and empties it into a stream that flows toward the state’s eastern plains. #4 The headwaters are the first source of a river, and the rain shadow is the area where it doesn’t rain. If transporting water from one side to the other were impossible, most of the people who live and farm on the eastern side of the mountains would have to move.

Book excerpt: “Wonderfully written…Mr. Owen writes about water, but in these polarized times the lessons he shares spill into other arenas. The world of water rights and wrongs along the Colorado River offers hope for other problems.” —Wall Street Journal An eye-opening account of where our water comes from and where it all goes. The Colorado River is an essential resource for a surprisingly large part of the United States, and every gallon that flows down it is owned or claimed by someone. David Owen traces all that water from the Colorado’s headwaters to its parched terminus, once a verdant wetland but now a million-acre desert. He takes readers on an adventure downriver, along a labyrinth of waterways, reservoirs, power plants, farms, fracking sites, ghost towns, and RV parks, to the spot near the U.S.–Mexico border where the river runs dry. Water problems in the western United States can seem tantalizingly easy to solve: just turn off the fountains at the Bellagio, stop selling hay to China, ban golf, cut down the almond trees, and kill all the lawyers. But a closer look reveals a vast man-made ecosystem that is far more complex and more interesting than the headlines let on. The story Owen tells in Where the Water Goes is crucial to our future: how a patchwork of engineering marvels, byzantine legal agreements, aging infrastructure, and neighborly cooperation enables life to flourish in the desert—and the disastrous consequences we face when any part of this tenuous system fails.

Book excerpt: To many, Shannon’s was the quintessential Irish pub - a brawl or two wasn’t out of the question, especially when interlopers decided to take matters into their own hands. The place where fishermen chose to meet, the fragrance of gutted fish was first to greet those brave enough to open the door. Most important? Tourists weren’t particularly welcomed. Keegan checked his watch, questioning whether he made the right decision - tipping a pint with someone he didn’t know wasn’t his thing, causing him to question ulterior motives. And, when he thought about it, there really wasn’t any reason for Smokey to set up a meeting. So, the question became...what did he have to gain? Fresh from his latest Washington, DC case, Detective Decklin Kilgarry knows he needs a change - a different time. A different place. Deciding to visit family in Cobh, Ireland, he places his career on hold - until murders begin to stack up and the livelihood of the village is threatened. Convinced his expertise can bring the killer to justice, there are those less than thrilled when he joins the case, prompting him to go undercover into the seamy side of Irish life.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book for 2011 The first authoritative biography of Kurt Vonnegut Jr., a writer who changed the conversation of American literature. In 2006, Charles Shields reached out to Kurt Vonnegut in a letter, asking for his endorsement for a planned biography. The first response was no ("A most respectful demurring by me for the excellent writer Charles J. Shields, who offered to be my biographer"). Unwilling to take no for an answer, propelled by a passion for his subject, and already deep into his research, Shields wrote again and this time, to his delight, the answer came back: "O.K." For the next year—a year that ended up being Vonnegut's last—Shields had access to Vonnegut and his letters. And So It Goes is the culmination of five years of research and writing—the first-ever biography of the life of Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut resonates with readers of all generations from the baby boomers who grew up with him to high-school and college students who are discovering his work for the first time. Vonnegut's concise collection of personal essays, Man Without a Country, published in 2006, spent fifteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold more than 300,000 copies to date. The twenty-first century has seen interest in and scholarship about Vonnegut's works grow even stronger, and this is the first book to examine in full the life of one of the most influential iconoclasts of his time.

Book excerpt: In this gentle meditation on the cycle of life, author and illustrator Paloma Valdivia gives us an opportunity to reflect on those who have gone, those who will come, and those of us who are here in this world — for the time being. The neighbor’s cat, a favorite aunt or the fish in yesterday’s soup have gone — and we may well miss them. At the same time, we celebrate the arrival of a new baby or a litter of playful kittens. It’s a mystery where we come from and where we are going, so why not enjoy ourselves while we can? Paloma Valdivia’s charming illustrations bring a light touch to this candid contemplation of life and death.
