Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Backstage with one of Canada’s greatest stage managers Whenever You’re Ready is an intimate account of the career of Nora Polley, who — in her 52 years at the Stratford Festival — has learned from, worked with, and cared for some of the greatest directors, actors, stage managers, and productions in Canadian theatrical history. In so doing, Nora became one of the greatest stage managers this country has ever seen. Here is an account of the Stratford Festival’s history like no other. From her childhood forays into a theater her father, Victor, worked tirelessly to help maintain, to her unexpected apprenticeship and the equally unexpected 40 years of stage management it ushered in, this is the Stratford Festival seen exclusively through Nora’s eyes. Here is an immersive account of a life spent in service of the theater, told from the ground floor: where actors struggle with lines and anxieties, where directors lose themselves in the work, where the next season is always uncertain, and where Nora — a stage manager, a custodian, a confidante, a pillar, a rock — finds her rhythm, her patience, her perseverance, her love, her consistency, and her invisibility. These are the qualities that make a stage manager great and, whenever you’re ready, this book will show you why.

Download or read book Artscape written by Frederick Ramsay and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-10-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ike Schwartz thought he could return to his hometown and ditch the demons that pursue him. More than anything, he wanted to blot out the pain and anger that came when his wife of less than a month was gunned down in a CIA foul-up. So he buried himself as sheriff in rural Picketsville, Virginia, a community indistinguishable from any of the hundreds of small towns that hang like beads on Interstate 81 running from Pennsylvania down to Georgia. Aside from its Civil War history, Picketsville's only real claim to fame is Callend College, a private women's school located just within its corporate limits. The college is notable, in turn, for housing one half of the billion dollar Dillon art collection, carefully secured in an underground bunker originally built in the late 1950s as a super bomb shelter. It's bad news for both Dr. Ruth Harris, the newly hired president of the college, and for a shadowy group whose services have been contracted by Middle Eastern fanaticsThe New Jihadwhen the collection is scheduled to be removed to New York. The plan is to steal the half billion dollars worth of fine art and statuary, and ransom it back for millions. With the closure of the facility imminent, the operation must be moved forward, which, in turn, creates unanticipated risks and problems. And everyone dismisses Ike Schwartz as a stereotypical rural sheriff. He is, however, a man with uncommon skills, a tough hide, and a notable pastall of which make an arresting first novel.

Book Synopsis You Can Go Home Again by : Charles Hays
Download or read book You Can Go Home Again written by Charles Hays and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a work of fiction about a terrible coal mining accident that happened in Hazard, Kentucky during the early 1980s. The date of the accident was about 1982 plus or minus maybe three years. Its hard to pin it down any better than that. But, I can tell you this much, it occurred back when Catherine Bach was playing the role of Daisy Duke on a TV show called The Dukes of Hazzard. What a beautiful woman she was when she walked across my TV screen. Everything about her body was absolutely adorable and, at the time, she just took my breath away. My protagonist in this particular tale is a man by the name of Caleb Baker. He is a Houston widower who has nothing to do since the passing of his wife. His lifelong friend is the Mayor of Hazard, Honorable Herbert Ray Henry who wants him to return to the mountains where he was born and reared. Henry wants it so bad that he has thrown in analytical laboratory and a staff of two talented people. Bakers first case involves a coal mine explosion. So you can go home again.

His confidence has taken a huge hit from his time in the Marines due to people making fun of him and things happening against him. He turned his experience in the military into a career in security once he got out. Now he is in charge of many people and an entire department. If he can keep doing everything right. Terrorists target the hospital for revenge against Americans for leaving Shiite Muslims to fend for themselves after Operation Desert Storm. The main villain has been in the country for decades and has worked to become a doctor. He keeps himself hidden and has been seething the entire time. When the attack he has been planning for decades begins, he stays idle among the hostages for hours and comes out only when things start going bad. Derrick must first navigate his own mistakes and problems, then protect the people of the hospital during the attack. He puts together a small group of people including security personnel and hospital visitors. He relies on a female active duty infantry leader who has jumped hurdles to get where she is today. She has come home to visit her mother in the hospital. Most characters in the novel are around long enough for the audience to get invested in, and then they are killed off throughout the book. Derrick has to lead a delaying fight toward the roof to evacuate people to keep them safe and grow as a person. All this leads to a climactic ending on the roof between the two leaders. The ending of the book leaves the reader wanting more, and then Derrick and Meghan secretly take the leader of the terrorists to the CIA for answers, leaving the opening for another book.

Offering a sweeping cultural and social history, it ranges widely and well from Jane Smiley's Pulitzer Prize-winning A Thousand Acres to Laura Ingalls Wilder's proto-feminist commentaries for the Missouri Ruralist; from the critical importance of rural girls and young women to time-honored organizations such as the Farm Bureau, 4-H, and FFA to the entrepreneurial role today's female agriculturalists and sustainable farm advocates play in farmers' markets, urban farms, and community-supported agriculture. For all those whose lives have been graced by the enduring strength of this regional and national touchstone, The Midwest Farmer's Daughter offers a one-of-a-kind scholarly examination and contemporary appreciation.
Book Synopsis You Can't Go Home Again by : Thomas Wolfe
Download or read book You Can't Go Home Again written by Thomas Wolfe and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available from Thomas Wolfe’s original publisher, the final novel by the literary legend, that “will stand apart from everything else that he wrote” (The New York Times Book Review)—first published in 1940 and long considered a classic of twentieth century literature. A twentieth-century classic, Thomas Wolfe’s magnificent novel is both the story of a young writer longing to make his mark upon the world and a sweeping portrait of America and Europe from the Great Depression through the years leading up to World War II. Driven by dreams of literary success, George Webber has left his provincial hometown to make his name as a writer in New York City. When his first novel is published, it brings him the fame he has sought, but it also brings the censure of his neighbors back home, who are outraged by his depiction of them. Unsettled by their reaction and unsure of himself and his future, Webber begins a search for a greater understanding of his artistic identity that takes him deep into New York’s hectic social whirl; to London with an uninhibited group of expatriates; and to Berlin, lying cold and sinister under Hitler’s shadow. He discovers a world plagued by political uncertainty and on the brink of transformation, yet he finds within himself the capacity to meet it with optimism and a renewed love for his birthplace. He is a changed man yet a hopeful one, awake to the knowledge that one can never fully “go back home to your family, back home to your childhood…away from all the strife and conflict of the world…back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time.”
