Book excerpt: NORTHWEST WASHINGTON STATE, 1985 For years, Harris Hayes has taught his daughter, Aggie, the ways of the northern woods, where she sketches nests of wild birds as an antidote to sadness. Then her depressed, unpredictable mother forbids her to climb the trees that give her sanctuary and comfort. Angry, ten-year-old Aggie accidentally lights a tragic fire and flees downriver. She lands her boat near untamed forest, then hides among trees and creatures she believes are her only friends—determined to remain undiscovered. A search party gathers hours after Celia arrives at her grandmother’s nearby farm. Hurting from her parents’ breakup, she also plans to run. But when she joins the hunt for Aggie, she meets two irresistible young men who compel her to stay. One is autistic; the other, dangerous. Ideal for fans of Under the Magnolias, Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Great Alone, Sugar Birds is a layered, riveting story set in the breathtaking natural world—where characters encounter the mending power of forgiveness, for themselves and for those who have failed them. “A true page-turner . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide. Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”—James Baldwin From the Paperback edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Maya Angelou is renowned worldwide for being one of the most influential women of our time. Her literary pieces, civil rights campaigning, filmmaking, dancing and acting have all received critical acclaim over the past four decades. Angelou has been privileged enough to have worked alongside some of history's most awe inspiring African-American civil rights campaigners, and has spent many years revisiting her roots in Africa. As someone who has come from a childhood filled with pain and tragedy, Angelou has made achievements that even those who come from more privileged beginnings would struggle to make. Her poetry, and other literary works, have been heavily influenced by her life, her culture and Harlem Renaissance authors. Much of her work is used in high schools and colleges around the world, but it has also caused a great deal of controversy. Angelou's approach to literature has been praised by feminists and literary critics alike. She has been recognized for her honest approach to the trials and tribulations that have plagued African Americans in the United States. Her approach has never been sugar coated, and at times her work has attracted criticism from those who would have preferred a less graphic approach. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In a bid to prevent the world from thinking she is frivolous, Angelou has attempted to remain tight lipped about her relationships. It is reputed that she has been married at least three times, but she will neither confirm nor deny whether there have been more marriages. In 1951, she married a Greek singer named Enistasious, who she would affectionately refer to as "Tosh."At the time that they became married, interracial relationships were heavily condemned in American society. The pair attended dance classes together and attempted to stage performances, but they were unsuccessful. A year later, the marriage broke down. Angelou found she had a passion for dancing, and began performing on a regular basis at the Purple Onion Club, an arena that has given many celebrities their rise to fame, including Woody Allen. Her time at the Purple Onion Club was short lived, and she began touring with other performers. Her talent took her around the world, and as she traveled she made a conscious effort to learn the languages of the countries she visited. This led to her learning Arabic, French and Spanish, among other languages. Maya Angelou had at least two additional marriages. Buy a copy to keep reading! Book excerpt: With the continued expansion of the literary canon, multicultural works of modern literary fiction and autobiography have assumed an increasing importance for students and scholars of American literature. This exciting new series assembles key documents and criticism concerning these works that have so recently become central components of the American literature curriculum. Each casebook will reprint documents relating to the work's historical context and reception, present the best in critical essays, and when possible, feature an interview of the author. The series will provide, for the first time, an accessible forum in which readers can come to a fuller understanding of these contemporary masterpieces and the unique aspects of American ethnic, racial, or cultural experience that they so ably portray. Perhaps more than any other single text, Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings helped to establish the "mainstream" status of the renaissance in black women's writing. This casebook presents a variety of critical approaches to this classic autobiography, along with an exclusive interview with Angelou conducted specially for this volume and a unique drawing of her childhood surroundings in Stamps, Arkansas, drawn by the Angelou herself.

Book excerpt: A San Francisco family copes with a teenage son’s mental illness in “a wonderful book, with characters that bounce off the page” (Elizabeth Strout). Named a Best Book of the Year by Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle In this “profound, heart-wrenching, and resonant” Lambda Award–winning novel, a quintessentially modern family is transformed by the mental breakdown of their adolescent son (Francisco Goldman). When Christopher disappears from his San Francisco home, his extended family comes together in a frantic search. But the sixteen-year-old is in much more trouble than they know, and their attempts to both support and save him will challenge their assumptions about themselves and one another. In “unflinching prose that’s both descriptive and soulful,” Stacey D’Erasmo explores the ways in which love moves us to actions that have both redemptive and disastrous consequences—sometimes in the same heartbeat (Time Out New York). “Open A Seahorse Year and be mesmerized,” raved the Advocate of this exquisitely crafted novel that is “both deeply satisfying and quietly subversive” (The New York Times Book Review). A winner of the Ferro-Grumley Award for Fiction and other honors, A Seahorse Year is “a stunning achievement” (Suzan Sherman). “[D’Erasmo] writes with a graceful, sometimes devastating directness, in clear, crisp phrases lined with subtle lyricism.” —The Boston Globe “Alternating perspectives and controlled, nuanced writing bring depth and compassion to each character . . . [and] make D’Erasmo an author to watch.” —Library Journal “After turning a page or two of A Seahorse Year you’ll know you’re into something special.” —Out magazine
