Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of two pioneer families, who moved to North Idaho, proved up on homestead land and became acquainted when a matchmaker successfully made an introduction. Their toughness and hard work helped them overcome tragedies and hardships and led to development of orchards, farmland, a logging railroad and silver mine. We experience their everyday life told with humor, sadness and insight. Coeur d'Alene was a lumbering town and the mill whistles regulated men's work hours and also the population's daily comings and goings. Downtown Coeur d'Alene in the 1940s and 1950s is pictured as seen through the eyes of a boy and teenager. The little neighborhood stores, the schools, teachers, classmates and people who made the city go are all here, many described with funny stories.

Book excerpt: The Pacific Northwests classic confrontation between militants demanding ambiguous change and an establishment intransigently defending the status quo occurred on Sunday, November 5, 1916. To this day no one knows who shot first, nor even how many died, but thanks to Mill Town, we have at last a charting of the forces, economic and personal, that led to the tragedy.Murray Morgan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage, Labour and the Working Classes is both a celebration and commemoration of working class culture. It contains sometimes inspiring accounts of working class communities and people telling their own stories, and weaves together examples of tangible and intangible heritage, place, history, memory, music and literature. Rather than being framed in a 'social inclusion' framework, which sees working class culture as a deficit, this book addresses the question "What is labour and working class heritage, how does it differ or stand in opposition to dominant ways of understanding heritage and history, and in what ways is it used as a contemporary resource?" It also explores how heritage is used in working class communities and by labour organizations, and considers what meanings and significance this heritage may have, while also identifying how and why communities and their heritage have been excluded. Drawing on new scholarship in heritage studies, social memory, the public history of labour, and new working class studies, this volume highlights the heritage of working people, communities and organizations. Contributions are drawn from a number of Western countries including the USA, UK, Spain, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand, and from a range of disciplines including heritage and museum studies, history, sociology, politics, archaeology and anthropology. Heritage, Labour and the Working Classes represents an innovative and useful resource for heritage and museum practitioners, students and academics concerned with understanding community heritage and the debate on social inclusion/exclusion. It offers new ways of understanding heritage, its values and consequences, and presents a challenge to dominant and traditional frameworks for understanding and identifying heritage and heritage making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heart of Atlanta Supreme Court decision stands among the court's most significant civil rights rulings. In Atlanta, Georgia, two arch segregationists vowed to flout the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the sweeping slate of civil rights reforms just signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Pickrick restaurant was run by Lester Maddox, soon to be governor of Georgia. The other, the Heart of Atlanta motel, was operated by lawyer Moreton Rolleston Jr. After the law was signed, a group of ministry students showed up for a plate of skillet-fried chicken at Maddox's diner. At the Heart of Atlanta, the ministers reserved rooms and walked to the front desk. Lester Maddox greeted them with a pistol, axe handles, and a mob of White supporters. Moreton Rolleston refused to accept the Black patrons. These confrontations became the centerpiece of the nation's first two legal challenges to the Civil Rights Act. In gripping detail built from exclusive interviews and original documents, Heart of Atlanta reveals the saga of the case's rise to the US Supreme Court, which unanimously rejected the segregationists. Heart of Atlanta restores the legal cases and their heroes to their proper place in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Wilson had just graduated from high school and was waiting to enter the University of Texas and become a lawyer. He was an honor student; literate but he lacked athletic and social skills. He lived in the shadow of his mother and was never quite allowed to develop like a normal boy. In the course of summer, David met a nigrah boy who worked in the grocery store down the block. Toye Lee Johnson was a year younger than David and was waiting for the day he turned 18 so he could join the army his sole plan. He had no interest in school nor graduating, but he was the embodiment of a perfect athlete. He was very familiar with the worldly ways of life and had a great deal of common sense, something David lacked. Not two humans were as different as the two. During the course of summer, the two boys who met daily at the trash bin, got to know each other, and decided to do things that the other boy had never done. This was against the code of the community, which absolutely prohibited whites and nigrahs from associating with each other in social matters unless the coloreds remained in their "place. Consequently, any kind of activity that the boys participated in had to be done in secret and often at night when they would not be seen together. The summer activities were a revelation to both boys and each was exposed to things he had never known, all these without their secret being discovered. All went well until the week before David left for Austin, and Toye Lee returned for his senior year. The event that happened that week changed the course of their lives and force David to make decisions, which would affect him for the rest of his life. It was a decision in which he consulted three people who had the most influence on his life. But in the end it was a decision only he could make. Then again, the question would always be: Did I make the right decision?
